Fertilizer in the 1940's

Nitrogen is one of the prime components of TNT. Many nitrogen plants existed during World War 1. After the war, these plants were used to make ammonia fertilizer. Right around that time, scientists at Land Grant College and research facilities had discovered the 16 essential ingredients for plant growth. Potassium was mined from potash. Phosphorous was made with phosphate rock. Ten more nitrogen plants were built during WW2. After that war, all combined plants had the ability of making 730,000 million tons of nitrogen-rich ammonia. Cash crops were then rotated less.

Fertilizing the fields was dangerous. The fertilizer pellets were explosive, burnt skin, and could cause someone to suffocate. Death by gardening. Bummer. I'm glad the fertilizer today isn't quite so dangerous.
