I didn't know we could grow peaches here? I'm not familar with that Florida peach. Is it sweet?

I picked 4 whole pea pods this morning. Not quite enough to include with dinner tonite! Next time, I plant more peas!

Michael, what a great garden!!! You must get so excited going out every morning to see what to harvest, how things are coming along, and what's blooming! I absolutely adore the pic with the peach fuzz showing, and those sugar snaps look sooo good. Mine are half the size, and my yield is pitiful. Your plants look so much better. I like how you mulch your veggies with straw. Looks very nice. Please keep showing us as your stuff continues to grow. Thanks for taking the time to share with us.

WOW!!! Your gardens are inspiring. I need to seriously think about a veggie/fruit garden. It's just that critters get in and eat half of what's growing and throw the other half on the ground. Very frustrating. I've been thinking about growing in a screened area, would that work? What joy it must be to walk out into your gardens every morning to see what's new, what's ready for harvest and what's blooming. Enjoy and happy first day of spring.

It's looking good. Amazing what some warm weather will do for a garden. Now we just need some rain.

Oh, and in case that sounded strange, it is amazing what warm weather and HARD WORK will do in a garden. I know the freezes bit you as much as everybody else. I really like how the kalanchoe and red snaps look together. Very cool. I combined some flowers in pots after this last shopping trip, too. I would not have thought to try it if you had not mentioned it.

Until I saw your slide show I hadn't realized that there were peach trees that grew well in our area. Now I'm off to do some reseach on where to find some and which cultivar would be best for my yard!

karalynn, this area of fla used to have large commercial peach orchards that eventually failed b/c of nematodes. there are now some new nematode-resistant rootstock which make it possible to grow them. still, they are short-lived trees (seven to ten years). i planted mine three years ago as a year-old stick in dec 2006, and now it's 11' tall and the trunk is 3.5 inches. so, even tho they aren't long-lived trees, they hit production pretty quickly. i've kept it very carefully pruned, per ifas directions.

the best place, by far, to get your peach is 'just fruits and exotics.' check out their chill hours table to choose your tree.

if you've never had a tropical/semi-tropical peach--they are very very juicy, very sweet, but, alas, lack the deep peachy flavor of the michigan peaches i grew up on. that said, it's a pretty easy tree to grow, adn very very very pretty. i'd grow one just for the blossoms and the general look.

tom&stpetefla --i've never had such luck with peas. i got them in early (january first!) and they didn't kick into production until a couple of weeks ago... but now, i'm picking a big bowl every day, TWICE A DAY! from two small rows. six inches of grass clippings and thorough watering every day. i planted them an inch apart, which wasn't too dense at all.

flowerlady, i live in a very urban setting, so i don't have any problems with animals (don't even have that many tree rats, thanks to the several owls that live in the oaks around my house). but i know people who grow out in the country and manage with a low fence.
