It's Official- Fall CG Seed Swap- Nov 9th Deadline

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to make the official seed swap post. I moved the deadline back this year by about ten days. So hopefully that will help those of you living in warmer climates. Let's see how it goes this year and we can push it back another week next year if need be. This way, I can at least try to get the seeds back out by Thanksgiving. The deadline is November 9th, which means I need to have your seeds in my hand by then. I simply cannot hold up the swap for late seeds, there are too many people participating this year.

Last year's information

That's the link to last year's post. Just a re-cap for those of you that are new. Seeds should be clean and free of chaff (if not, please label includes chaff on the pack so the recipient knows). Place roughly 25 seeds in each packet. Larger seeds may have less per pack and smaller seeds (like poppies) just sprinkle a good amount in there.

Label each packet with your user name, common & latin name of plant, sun & water requirements, height, zone information, etc. Basically- as much information as you can squeeze on there!

You can trade as many or as few packets as you would like. You will get back roughly the same number of packets you sent in.

I do allow a brief wish list to be included in your package. Write down no more than three types of seeds you would like in return. I will do my best to fulfill at least one wish. The rest will be just a grab bag.

Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope inside the envelope you are sending me. This just makes the swap go by that must faster. I know last year many people asked to reuse their envelopes and it took me an extra week to just write the addresses on! Try to place a little extra postage on the envelope, too, since most people will actually receive more seeds than they sent in.

Also, please include one or two extra stamps for our foreign friends if you are able to do so.

If you would like to participate in the swap, go here and fill out the contact form. Be sure to put your correct email address in. Simply mention that you would like to participate in the seed swap and then request my snail mail address. Do not contact me through GW. Last year many people were trying to use the contact link through GW and the emails were getting lost. I will respond to all emails within a day or two. If you do not hear from me in about five days, try filling out the form again. Everyone will need to contact me this year for my address as my husband and I moved a couple months ago, so we have a new address.

I'm looking forward to the swap this year and I know many of you are as well.

ProudGM, I don't think so but someone correct me if I'm wrong.... If you send in 10 pkts. of purple hollyhocks, ten of us are going to be so happy to get them. You in return are going to get 10 pkts. of something different from each of us. We all end up with much more variety than we had before the swap.

Here is an envelope idea that I think will work for everyone:

Have your bubble envy addressed to you, stamped and ready, and then slip it into a big paper envelope that you address to Tracy and stamp. You can use a big, magazine-sized envelope, cut apart a paper grocery bag, or use two sheets of printer paper taped into an envelope.

This way, Tracy just slips the ready-to-mail envelope out of the paper, and you didn't have to send a bubble envelope folded up inside another bubble envelope!

Hello and thanks so much for this fun swap!!!!!!!!! Shirley & Craftie2 & Corrine & Vina thanks for the congrats. It felt so good to win that I actually jumped up and did a dance. My significant other, Noel, went running for his camera so I calmed right down lol. No need for documentation... but I am so in love with all things garden and gardening that the idea of a "supa prize" got me up into the air. Corrine, thank you for your thoughts on attitude -- I think you've got that absolutely right and I'll be filing your examples in the back of my mind and pulling them out when necessary and applicable....probably tomorrow lol!!!! I'm sorry for requesting the list so soon. I wasn't trying to start anything or cause a problem for the swap. I just remembered that last year it was being posted and updated all along as people were joining. I wasn't trying to only send to a few that had their lists up before everyone else, just so you all know. I am just still very new in knowing what kinds of things others want is all. I thought if I saw something on several lists that it must mean a lot of people might like that type of seed is all. I am making an order because I have to if I want to have anything to send in. I would hate to make an order for things that nobody is wanting. It's no big deal, though. I'll just place an order for things that I want and hopefully others will be putting some of the same items on their own want lists so that I can share the extras. I think I'll go ahead and place the order, then put down what I ordered on my "haves" list so others can add them to their wants if they're at all interested in them. I hope that sounds like a good plan. Again, I apologize. I absolutely did not want to cause any problems. I was just trying to see if I would be able to have anything to send in that others wanted. There truly are a lot of seeds here, and this is only half. It's still two weeks until the Dec.15 mailing deadline. Now that Thanksgiving is over, I can spread out upstairs and start dropping seeds in everyone's bags. That is the fun part. Then comes the more challenging part: deciding what to put in the bags of those who did not receive as much as they sent. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday and is ready to tackle the Christmas season. I've tossed a couple of Christmas pillows on the sofa, and that may be all the decorating I do. With six in and out cats, including three young ones, not many decorations can survive their curiosity and rambunctiousness. One year I bought silk balls that would not break. They do ravel, however, and strings of white silk were all over the house. The cats had a great time, and the mess was not too difficult to clean up.

Sorry I have been missing for a few days. My husband and I were away in Virginia looking for a new home. This is our second trip. Our first was to decide where to live and this one was to look at houses. This past weekend made us realize this is the right decision for us. The state is absolutely beautiful and we even found a great log cabin. We are going to wait and see if it stays on the market while we finish up getting our house ready to list. If we lose it, there will be more but we are excited now to go ahead and make the move. I do want to thank some friends for some Happy Birthday greetings I received. Proudgm: Memo has the right idea. There is no limit to the number of the same kinds of seeds you can send in. Just keep in mind that once you get about around 30 of the same kind, some people might be getting doubles. So if you have that many, you might want to put more seeds in one packet.

StageRat: That is a wonderful idea! That will work perfectly. And that way, no one will be wasting money on TWO bubble envelopes, just one. Easy peasy.

I'm in ... I've already got about 40 packages of saved seed ready to go... waiting to see if I can get some seed from a few other of my plants. Next year is my "back yard re-do" and I can't wait to see what all I get from the swap to add to the mix!

I'm having a hard time picking out three "wishes", lol. I want to try so many different plants it's hard to choose. One thing I know I would love to try is Yvonne's Salvia. The story reminds me so much of my family and their "passalong" plants. If anyone has seed, please include some in your envelope.

I also sent in the info on the contact page.

I plucked a lot of seeds today from my impatients,not the normal everyday kind.They are closer to the New Guinea kind,but aren't those either.I planted them from seed 2 years ago,but the sun faded the pkg,so i don't remember the exact name.They self seed very well and i had double the amount this year and pulled out a lot of them as there would have been too many.

Just a thought for anyone participating- would it be a problem to include a typed list of all the seeds you're sending? It would make my life soooo much easier.

I was having internet problems myself. I wasn't able to read here or my email until today.

Unfortunately I did not receive your email. I even went through the 340 bulk messages that piled up while I was unable to get connected, and nothing.:(

Tracy and others, there wasn't too much I was looking for other than Steven's miniature hollyhocks and a few poppies and it seems like I will be getting some hollyhock and poppy seed from this side of the border soooo I'll be skipping the exchange for this year. I will have some croatian lettuce and welsh poppy seed, if anyone would like a few email me I'll see what I can do, that is as long as they last.

Gardenweb hasn't sent me any emails in weeks. I posted on some other forums and requested emails sent to me - nada, despite several responses. I think GW is the culprit here, not anyone's personal email system.

Gottagarden, that is really interesting that you say that. I sent you an email pleading you for some amaranth and helianthus/heliopsis seeds as you suggested(which was the one you have?), but figured you didn't have the seeds as I didn't hear back. I was worried I was bugging you! :)

I have replied to every message that I have received. Please make sure you check your bulk bins before emptying. The swap has gotten my email addy on some spam lists (ugh!) and my emails are ending up in there for some. If you haven't heard from me, please try contacting me again.
