wow I get to not only contribute to this thread, I even get to start it!

Actually I was halfway to post on Sept 4 when I realized it's a new week! LOL!

I haven't been too pleased lately with my flowers but I love my garden-- half our meals are out of there! This was an experiment year, so I know now that I have to fill in late blooming flowers and start the garden earlier! Also, I need to keep weeding even when I'm overloaded with company!

Puppy decided to help, wrecked the verbena so I had to change that vase. Salvia, wildflowers, and calendula eventually-- had to get them out of 2 different beds!

My roses are trying to bloom AGAIN! The other bed has those pretty bushes my aunts want seeds from and more delphs. Two more beds different from others!

Vrie, your lit' puppy is soooo cute! Very nice plants too!

Lots of plants still happening in the garden, I hope the Asters bloom soon, weÂre supposed to get down to +1 tonight!

Well, that rabbit or his/her relatives did not behave. They hit the gazania plants again, just as they where full of buds. Seems that gazania is #1 on the list of rabbit food in the flower beds. Now the chipmunks and groundhogs are not particular, the first thing the find goes down the throat. BUT They do not like marigolds, and will not go near plants that have marigolds beside them or around them. So next years plan is 100's of marigold plants used as an edging all around the beds, sort of like a fence of marigolds. At least it's worth a try to keep the 4 legged critters away. Angie, Paula, I should have plenty of seeds of the easter egg plant. In the fall the white easter eggs start to turn yellow and when they are bright, bright yellow, they are ripe. Then I pick them off, but them in half, then each half in quarters and let them dry to get the seeds for next year. The fun look is that you have various colors on the plant as the "eggs" start to ripen ranging from pure white to starting to turn yellow to bright bright yellow. Oh, when you feel the "egg" it feels like a real egg as well, feels like an eggshell on the outside. The irony, to me, is it starts out looking like a real white egg, feels like a real white egg and when ripe, turns to the the color of the bright yellow yolk of a real egg. I've seen various information on them with google searches that say they are just ornamental and that they can be eaten. I've just decided to leave it as a conversation piece of plant growing in pots in the garden, since I haven't been able to get a clear answer as to whether they are safe to eat. Paula, I should have plenty of seeds from the cosmos candy stripe for trade, the seeds are just beginning to ripen now. Will be posting in mid Sept for trades Mnswgal, i planted the zinnia "Old Mexico" in HOS of about 10 seedlings at a time. All the seeds where from a burpee commercial pack of zinnia old mexico seeds purchased at K-mart. They had all their seeds from the time they came in to the store through the late spring at 40% off. Did get several packets of seeds there of burpee and martha stewart brand. Anyways, they where all sown at the same time in 3 different containers and believe it or not, they bloomed with 3 different types of blooms. the one above and these 2 blooms this big clump of old mexico that is blooming as it it supposed to look except for one bloom if you look carefully on the right of the pick, there is an old paler flower in the middle of the clump and this bloom of a clump that bloomed totally different from what it was supposed to also, but I do like this one as well and the entire clump is like this The dwarf balloon flower grows about 8 inches tall. I'll have tons of seeds of them once the pods ripen, but it takes forever for them to do so. At least another month before I have ripe seeds for trades, but will have them Thanks Karen Fran

Shauna, that does look like my tiny white clematis except for the leaf shape...ohh and the pic you linked to doesn't have bird poop on the leaf...LOL I started this from seed, it, along with a bunch of other seedlings grew like mad, and I babied it indoors over the winter last year. Then my wonderfully exuberant puppy decided he wanted to dig in some dirt. He pulled up all the clematis seedlings, and this was the nly one to survive. I planted it out this spring and it has taken off. It certainly isn't spectacular like the large flowering types, but it hides part of the ugly tree I have it planted near. Ohh and I didn't detect any scent from it either. Maybe it needs more sun as well.

Thanks for the feed back! And there's no secret.lol.I took the cuttings on 11-12, I usually like the fresh red springtime growth for cuttings they seem to root much faster(usually 7-14 days) than cuttings taken in November.But these took almost three weeks to root enough to transplant (12-3). Also I don't like cutting on my plants that late in the year but I have much more time in the winter to spend on them. That way by spring they are ground or 5 gallon bucket ready so I'm not watering everyday or even twice a day in the hot summer. I'm a newbie too so any help or "secrets" would be of help.

Misty- yes they are , they carry LOTS of wooden items, they cut all the stuff from the books and pattern packets they carry and they are a supplier for most of the designers in Woodstrokes and for Artist Club. I have seen the book when I was there last week, but he forgot to show it to me until after I already wrote my check, so they have one waiting for me, it is soo cool, my boys are really getting into it and want things so for nothing else making it for them and their teachers is a joy. If you can't find what you want on their website, just call them, they are wonderful ppl. I lvoe going there..S

Vrie - Years ago DD wouldnÂt eat vegetables at the table but would sit in the garden and eat peas off the vine.
It was one way to get vegetables into her.

Brieen Â if I am not mistaken the pretty pink flower you are referring to is a phlox. Vrie correct me if I am wrong.

Nice to see the gardens are still going strong.

Sharon, how big does that Pearly Everlasting get? Mine is a different variety(has no yellow center) and gets quite large. I still have nightmares about your Solanum attacking me!lol

The roses are looking good again. Hope all the little buds have time to flower.

Great pics everyone. I too have brought in a bunch of flowers lately...have flower arrangements everywhere in the house. LOL.

The garden is winding down...but yet still some things just keep sending out new buds...like some of the roses. I doubt that they will have time to open fully.....but it would be nice.

Laurie, the Pearly Everlasting were winter sowed this year as well bloomed their first year, however not the anticipated height of 2Â, right now they are only about 1Â, hopefully they will put on a grand show next year. I also want to try A. alpicola a much shorter species for the rock garden next year.

The scary Solanum atropurpureum is just now finally producing tomato like blooms, but I doubt very much that theyÂll produce any fruit/seed before the soon to be hard frost hits. When it dies, for sure I will have to put the overalls and heavy-duty gloves on when I rip this plant out of the garden, the thorns are very sharp and long. IÂm sure this plant would be ideal for those who are trying to keep cats or burglars off the property ;)

You have quite the cutie-picking partner there! He looks like he has some good healthy choppers to eat all that corn up too!

Last night I was putting some tenders like my Cannas into the greenhouse because of the frost risk warning, so when I was lifting my huge pots up the flower bud on top got wedged up into the door jam, hopefully I didnÂt damage it too much. This year has been a terrible year for Cannas, just not enough heat and sunshine. Usually by this time of the year they are already producing seeds heads.

Sierra what is that gorgeous orange/yellow flower in your first photo? Is it some kind of Osteospermum or Dimorphotheca African Daisy?

And Savona your baskets hanging from your arbor is awesome, theyÂre about the same size as the hanging baskets that are hanging down our town mainstreet.

Rudbeckia Autumn Colours is for sure on my wish list for next year!

Sharon....that yellow flower is 'Butterfly Daisy' Argyranthemum frutescens.

I bought one plant in a large 4inch pot....the plant had been pinched......and was just getting new buds on it. I brought it home and cut/pinched it back again.....the plant became huge. LOL. Also the little white crab spiders liked it all summer. They would fold over petals to hide under....so it was obvious which flowers they were on.....we watch the spiders grow all summer.....not many bugs on this plant. hee hee.

HI all sorry I haven't been around for a couple days-- company kept me busy!

I don't know what that pink/purple flower is. They are about 4ft tall bushes that stay green until it gets really cold. They are in many places around town always tall. I wish I knew, as 2 of my aunts want it-- I'll try to collect seed later this fall and see if I'm successful or not-- if I am, both aunts get a plant and I'll let you know in a few months!

I've been rather disappointed with the tomatoes. I have 35+ plants and that's the most I get at a time! I'm gonna be pulling maters and trying to ripen them til my eyeballs bleed when frost hits! Oh well that's what a weird year its been!

As suggested by Ian, it appears to be a variety of Phlox paniculata - sort of an unusual color, very attractive.

I would vote Phlox too. Everyone's gardens are still looking really great! I could post a pic of a gross corn fungus or big fat slugs but I won't spoil the thread. LOL.

I actually have to brag that my cannas are doing great and blooming like crazy. Just to make myself feel better.

Vrie,

If you wish to propagate Phlox paniculata it is perennial.
Phlox can be propagated by division or cuttings.
If you use seed there is no guarantee that the flowers will be the same color as the parent.
Division- divide healthy Phlox in spring.
Cuttings- lift Phlox and take 1in cuttings from thicker roots; place horizontally in trays.
Aerial parts of border Phlox are prone to nematode infestation and should not be used for propagation.

BTW is it fragrant? A lot of Phlox are fragrant.

Great pictures everyone! I am making notes of what is blooming yet for everyone (OR I could just say: "my wish list just grew bigger!" LOL).

Maybe next week I'll have some new plants to show because I've got an "Autumn Sun" rudbeckia that is finally setting out buds and another plant is also finally budding out. Soooo..... fingers crossed for some better weather next week and NO frost yet!!!! 8^)

Savona, your hanging baskets and arbour are incredible! Did you build the arbor yourself? It looks like it would stand up in even a hurricane!

Sharon, you'd think with those chompers he would like eating the corn......but unfortuneatly he won't touch the stuff....just likes likes helping mom pick it......he's a fussy eater and it drives me crazy!

Everyone's pictures are so great. Sad to think that probably in a month, the gardens won't be looking so wonderful anymore :(

Kat, for sure would love some seed from your A.gigas, I think the key for good germination of this one is to have fresh seed, so yes I'd be interested in a trade. I hoping I will have viable seed from the Salvia 'Rose Queen', they were just WS'd this year so I'll let you know.

For some reason my Knautia macedonic seed didn't germinate, I love it, gotta try again!

Yes, the Knautia macedonica should winter for you; seem to be totally hardy here, and a really good long-bloomer. Great bird photos, as always!

So many pretty pics! I love the birds-- I take alot of pics with insects!

Looking I guess the consensus is that that pretty plant is a phlox. I really like them so I'll probably take some root cuttings in a month or so (that's what I found on it anyway, right) As long as I can get a few going, my aunts will be happy! Thanks for the input!
