Robinson's Comet lily bulblets

Is anyone interested in some Robinson's Comet bulblets?

Robinson's Comet is a downfacing pink lily that stands about 3 feet high.

I have about 150 bulblets each with little roots on them already and would send about 10 bulblets per person in an envelope.

I'm really looking forward to seeing some pictures of your irises and daylilies BJ! I picked up some NLIS irises from you last summer and you had a few daylilies in bloom at the time, but I'd love to see more. Nice to see you back from holidays Brenda. Hope you had an awesome time! Sure are, but don't bother to remove them because they'll just fall when mature. You have time to pick them up because they don't grow right away. Put pots around the stem to let them plant themselves if you want them in pots, transplant seedlings, or just let them be. I've found them sprouted on top of gravel & easy to put in pots at that point. I have some from summer '09 I moved to pots kept outside & are still small. A bit larger for the in ground planted ones, but no blooms yet. I've read it takes years, but I have no idea how long. I still find the sprouts in the spots where I've had the large pots. There could be hundreds of them if I bothered to move them all over the years, but I don't. Deer like 'em & don't eat them every year. After frustration last summer I have moved them all to the fenced backyard except for a few in the back of the border stuffed full of other plants about 2' from the house, so hope the deer won't go there. Deer come to eat them right before the blooms open, so beware of that if you have deer. In my climate lilies often do better in the better drainage of pots, so I have some in pots & some in the ground. I like that I can move the pots in & out of display. I dislike the foliage after blooming on Asiatics & tigers. I don't mind Orientals as the fall color is an accent on the patio.

The flowers have powerful sweet spicy nocturnal fragrance. With a slight early summer breeze you can smell even one flower 30' away. And it sends you searching to track the source and bask there. My goal is to get a nice stand of them going like these folks posted on the internet. Notice the flower stalk stem diameter height differences? It's a massive nutrient feeder and pushing light just to the edge can help bump up the size too. Internet photo showing full 14' potential of the C. giganteum v giganteum variety. <click photo below to grow lily> The above photo is also massively informative. This is a full sun location! By the shadow on the base leaves ir looks like they planted it on the north side of a scrub to give it morning sun but to shade the base leaves in rhe afternoon and early evening. The smaller upper leaves must be more sun tolerant and collect extra energy to support taller flower atem growth. Bet the would have gotten only 9-10' feet from it in a fully afternoon shaded northwall of a house. In a hotter summer this open sun to top location would likely burn the leaves. In our former house we had a v yunnanese between two 5' hydrangea on the northside of large evergreen trees. When flowering a few of the upper leaves were in a brighter location. But there was not enough sun here to reach full size potential. It was 9' instead of 12'. When we moved to a sunny yard last year in February we had tubbed the above v yunnanese in mid winter. And one of the offshoot bulbs from the spend mother bulbs bloomed on the northside of our shed that June! More sun here gave us fuller flowers with better shape, and more of them. We'll be working it into the landcape project in the next couple weeks. There are again offshoot bulbs from the spent mother bulb. In the tubbed plant shoots are growing now again in February. And there are with two pineapple sized bulbs looking ready to bloom this year. If it does bloom, we will have gotten the initial bulb to make a clump blooming three years in a row! It takes 5-7 years to bloom from seed, However, it looks like nearly yearly blooming might be possible from a well managed clump if fed heavily enough. When you have a pineapple sized mother bulb it sits at the surface exposed a bit. Then here in the first.week of February the top leaf scales of the bulb open out and a 12" new bud starts opening new leaves. You'll be running outside each morning to see what it does next. Note the little pellets on the ground. Heavier than average 10-10-10 pelleted slow release fertlizer (bluish color) and mammal/bird safe slug bait (cream color) are key at this growth stage! I found a rare internet photo of v yunnanese being studied in the native China Yunnan provience Chinese habitat. Looks Tropical Sub Alpine in zone and the plant can obviously be smaller in stature (6'?). This one however has drop dead amazing flowers! From my experience it has little on no fragrance until dusk triggers it. Otherwise their eyes might have looked very surprized and jaws been dropped. It'd be worth collecting seed to select more cold tolerant superior flowered varieties for horticulture. Not sure if the flowers work well as a cut flower. I love seeing them above my head and collecting the amazing seed capsule stem for dried flower arrangements. Internet photos ... they have a dramatic 'little shop of horrors' movie devious plant look. I'd grow the Giant Himalayan Lily just for the seed capsule decorative feature alone! The candelabra shaped array looks great when cut to about 3' tall. There's absolutely nothing subtle about this dramatically engaging species!

I have only 2 more batches of 10 bulblets left.

All of you please let me know here on the FN or by email how you will overwinter the bulblets and in spring how they are doing, okay?

I planted mine into a container and sank the container into the ground. I'm sure they'll be fine because i've broken off bulblets while digging around in the garden and just poke a hole into the ground for them. The next year, there are tiny lilies growing. :)

Thanks Brenda. I got mine the other day in the mail. Probably tomorrow I'll get them in the ground. Good idea to use a pot for them then I remember where I planted them. I don't know when Sierra will get hers as I saw her on Monday so they came a day late. She'll probably have to wait now until spring time.

Thanks Brenda. I did exactly what alot of others did. I planted them in a pot and then put them into the ground with a marker.

I dug out the pot yesterday. They are growing Brenda. So I took them out of the pot and planted them in the ground.

I have this memory, and it's not called "good"! LOL I found the pot i sunk into the ground but couldn't remember ever buying that lily. However i must have because i thought that it was intended for my sister-in-law whose last name is Robinson. Nothing was coming up in the pot, so i dug around and found the bulblets - still nothing tweaked.

If i had a brain, i'd be dangerous.....

I haven't heard from Syreeta to find out how the bulbs did this winter. Hopefully they survived nicely. They are a pretty lily.

I forgot all about them. Hmm... I'll have to go looking for them. I do have two clumps of leaves from bulbs where I think I planted them. But I don't think they are lilies. I'll have to look for them tomorrow.

I dug out the pot I have mine planted in but no action yet. They were buried in a shaded area along a hedge so I have moved them into a sunnier spot for more light and heat to see if I can get something going...

I actually moved my pot into my greenhouse where it has been sitting behind some taller plants. I just noticed the other day that I do indeed have sprouts. I will be planting out soon with protection so that the pesky deer that I have hanging around doesn't think that I have added a new selection to his nightly buffet... :(

I have a confession...........

I planted them in my flowerbed last fall. - and then forgot I planted them in the flowerbed last fall. And dug up and redid my flower bed this spring. And then remembered that I had planted them in my flowerbed last fall.........so I don't know where they ended up for real. But.........I do have what might be one coming up - and the reason I think that is because its not in any "row" of anything I planted - its just kind of out there - so I think at least ONE survived.

Sandcase, hi! Haven't talked to you for a while. I am sure that there will be more bulblets on the Robinson's Comet this fall again...there always is. So...if you can't find them and for sure lost them, we'll make arrangements to get some more to you. What did you put into your flowerbed? Annuals? Perennials? Have the deer been leaving the flowers alone?

Mine were about 2-3" tall. I stuck a bow on the pot and gave it to my sister-in-law on Saturday (her birthday). She gets to do the babying now. :)

My Robinson's Comet lilies are couple inches for sure. I actually left a deep impression in the soil when I planted and it is slowly filling in.
