Picket fence

I am so excited. I bought the picket fence that I'm going to use in my cottage garden today. I was going to make one out of wood but since I'm limited in what I can do on my own I decided today to buy a vinyl one. My veggies are still putting out or I would rip them up now and start preparing the soil. It's going to be a loooonnng time until spring. I don't know if I can stand it.

Welcome to the picket fence club :) Just one warning tho...it can be hazardous to the pocketbook...picket fences should come with warnings....can result in endless plant buying to "decorate" the picket fence!

Hold on. Picket fence? As in "wooden picket fence that needs to be painted every year or two," or "vinyl picket fence that never needs to be painted"? If the former, just think of the fun dealing with rose canes as you try to paint (I'd suggest annuals and/or herbaceous perennials; maybe Peonies if you're in the right climate); if the latter, OK, let the rose-planting begin.

Oh Lordy...I have been making pine needle baskets for about 9 months and it's TOTALLY taken over my life! I do just about every craft imaginable, but they've all been set aside in favor of my pine needling! They're really quite easy to make and you can find LOTS of YouTube videos to show you how to make them. Just find long-needle trees and start gathering from the ground under the tree! By long, I mean 10 to 12 inches. Shorter needles can be used, but they're not nearly as nice to work with. There are people online selling pine needles if you can't find any in your areas.

Thank you so much for your response! I am so happy to know now what to do! Thompson's says we have to wait a week to prime, so we'll go out next weekend and get the paint products you suggested. May I ask one last question? I promise not to be a further bother. Will the cedar oil come out through the sealer, paint and primer, or is that going to be a non issue going forward? Again, thank you for your advice.

Flowersaremusic: Yes, that photo was my original inspiration. I decided though, to use different colored roses behind the fence as I couldn't devote so much of my limited real estate to just one variety. Also, I skipped the salvias as they just don't return with much vigor in my garden. And since my nepeta does so well I didn't bother with the baptista either, but I love that picture! I don't know what the issue is with shasta daisies in my garden. I also lost a different variety elsewhere, but I have another in a nearby location that is doing well. I wonder if we just didn't have enough snow cover this year? Summersrythm: I have a few PIP Eden behind the fence in front of my porch and they struggle with the intense heat and sun. I'm trying a mineral type product to see if I can stop the blooms from wilting, if they don't improve this year I may have to take all four out which is such a shame because they can be so gorgeous. Cori Ann: Our spring/summer is probably somewhat similar but shorter like you mentioned. I am strongly considering a smaller ground cover rose if I can find them. My local nursery carries the drift series, not sure about carpet flower. Does the white carpet flower self clean? I have a neighbor with some type of white ground cover rose and after a while they look like dirty, used tissues since they don't ever deadhead. I do like peach drift quite a lot. But maybe something lighter would be better as I have so many colorful roses around. Apple blossom carpet flower looks nice. I always liked the idea of the shata daisies, but I was disappointed in the bloom length. Once good show in july and then a flower here or there through fall, but that's the same with most perennials I guess. Daylilies could work and do well here, but I'm not all that crazy about them. I do have a few in my garden. I like phlox, but it begins to look poorly in my garden, getting yellow legs and lower leaves.

Well, this probably wasn't as cheap as building one but it should be easier. As for obtaining plants everytime I think I have my want list completed I see a picture of something someone else has and I have to add it to my list. Is there really such a thing as too many plants? LOL!

Proudgm - you are going to LOVE that picket fence. This is the one that my hubby built for me last winter as a Christmas present. I am so proud of him - he did all the notching of the posts and cut all the pickets himself. Keesha is so right - there should be a warning on ALL fences. We are now talking about a border all around the outside with lower growing plants and more clematis on the fence itself....

lol - natvtxn - maybe after he is done with all the 'honeydo's' at this place. Seriously I have been very blessed - God took my husband of 38 years to be with him several years ago but blessed me with another great one. We share an equal love for gardening and he is very handy with wood and loves working with it. All I have to do is show him a picture/idea and he will create it....

What a lovely garden and such a pretty fence. It reminds me of the way mine will look in that it's set off by itself. Mine will only have picket fence on two sides so that it is open to the yard. Eventually I hope to extend it but I better see how the first project goes first.

Lynn, it's gorgeous! I'm keeping a copy of that photo for the time when we can really make a go of our own vegetable garden, and for our church garden which is being re-designed this fall! I love some of the others I have seen (DIANA), but esp. at church we need a non-painted fence look!!

Oh WOW!! That is so beautiful Lynne!! What a keeper he is!! :) My DH isn't handy at ALL!! I keep telling him I think it would be really sexy if he made me something and even that isn't working :( hehe
