It'd be helpful to know where you are located -- what would give you that look in California might not even survive in Vermont...and vice versa.

You are in zone 7b based on your prior post, care to elaborate more re: city/state? Would help others give input regarding black spot and disease concerns.

Not sure growing a true tea rose in that climate would be the best thing along a picket fence.
Mrs. Dudley Cross gets huge in California, but have no experience growing it in 7b climate. Clearly it will be smaller, but would need input from someone who has grown it in a similar climate.

I meant to add that the garden is located in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Thomas, check with Cool Roses in Ft. Lauderdale. Whatever they have should work well for you. They will bud whatever you want. They have a web site.

You could very likely do well with 'Old Blush,' which I gather thrives in FL.

For growing on a fence, though, the best recommendation WOULD be a climbing rose. Stretched out horizontally along a fence a Climbing Tea, for instance, would give you a great distribution of bloom. I'm not quite sure why you don't want that.

Hold on. Picket fence? As in "wooden picket fence that needs to be painted every year or two," or "vinyl picket fence that never needs to be painted"? If the former, just think of the fun dealing with rose canes as you try to paint (I'd suggest annuals and/or herbaceous perennials; maybe Peonies if you're in the right climate); if the latter, OK, let the rose-planting begin.

I have more white picket fencing than any sane person should have....probably enough for a blocks worth of homes.

I am trying to keep the roses on one side or the other of the fence and can paint when I prune if need be.

The neighbors have an old lady banks on their picket fence, they only paint the parts they can reach and it looks pretty nice.

Kippy makes an excellent point. You will be really sorry if you weave the rose through the fence very much. Just tuck in a few laterals to help hold it up, but not big canes that will be part of the permanent structure of the rose plant itself.

If a OGR naturally grows to be 8 feet wide and 8 feet deep, could I control the size of it by putting in a confined bed (made of brick, stone, etc) that is 4 feet wide and 4 feet deep, etc?

No. That won't do it. Instead, select a rose that can mature to a health plant, and be the rose you want.

The China rose Archduke Charles might work just fine for you. It starts out as a light pink bloom and the blooms darken from exposure to UV rays so that the bloom ends up dark red. It is also a narrower growing china compared to most china's and it has a nice scent.

Reviving this old thread. What did you end up planting, Thomas? I am doing the same thing, but in Cocoa, FL. We are putting up picket fencing in the front of our home and I want to add in a few roses.
