New gardener in FL

Well, im new to gardening. Very new. I planted some cosmos, and 4 o clocks in a plastic box, my make-shift green house, and they are now large sprouts. I loved it ALOT! The thought that I produced such lovely things was amazing. Within two days after that, I bought an orange tree thats about a foot and a half feet tall, and planted twelve orange seeds, reading online that most orange seeds wont make it through germination.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I could grow here? I live in south-west florida. Im near the beach, but I am willing make a flower bed, or a nice patch of fertilizer to start any kind of plant. My back yard isnt too sandy. Any suggestions?

Welcome from the Treasure Coast (SE FL). You came to the right place for answers, but we will need more info pictures would help also.
Are you interested in veggies, citrus, blueberries, herbs? Tropical, butterfly gardening?

I'm in south FL. Zone 10 now. And yep, we've gotten to see some marvelous things in our travels thus far. Like the time we were sailing up in the San Juan Islands, in the middle of a pod of Orca whales. One broached alongside our 29 foot sloop, with his big eye looking into the cockpit right at us! Wasn't much time passed and we got a 42 foot sailboat, lol. Good to back on the east coast again. Like the weather much better! girlsaylor

If I wasn't a computer moron I would post a picture of my Suzuki DR650 thumper with my new pitchfork strapped to it as I hauled it home from HD. Had it pointed astern and I didn't get tail gaited even once on the way home! LOL CaptTurbo Oh Cap, now you're talking my language, I love Indian's and Hudson's :-) went to one of his seminars at h.d., had a book signing afterwards...lou, will sell you an autographed copy for 20.00 bucks.....it's a steal....:) very good book! talked to him after the presentation and he said that this book was "his baby". great guy, and very interesting to talk and listen to.....make that thirty bucks....! Mike, I believe you are correct. When I purchased my Samsung-built Kenmore Elite Washer, the sister Samsung model (which looks identical minus the 'Samsung' branding, and has identical specs), the Kenmore version had a slower max spin speed (something like 1100 vs 1300 on the samsung). I asked the salesperson and they told me it's simply because Samsung doesn't want to 'give away' all their features (i.e. remain competitive), so they use the software to limit the speed to 1100rpm on the Kenmores. Seems to follow with the SpinSense option too.

I am staying in FL I have decided and am getting all ready to work in the yard. My compost is brewing, I am working hard to eradicate the Brazilian Pepper Tree(s) (LOTS OF THEM) in my yard (using Rodeo- I love the ocean!), and trying to work with plants that require minimal water, and are more natural to the landscape (with a few potted favorites that I love). I love moonflowers, morning glories, plumbago, firecracker plants, torenia is my absolute FAVORITE flower, and have several varieties of jasmine and gardenia. I also have some succulents, agave, and what FL yard doesn't have Bougainvillea?!

Thanks, well, im in zone 9b. I wont be able to get pictures but I can tell you I can only do flower beds and pots... I wish I could have blueberries but isnt there growth irratic without propper chilling? Also, I definately want alot of citrus :)

A butterfly garden would be too big, because my parents dont own the house. Were looking into buying in a year or two though.

I was very excited to find such an active forum. I guess I can do flowers, some chives would be nice(I used to wash them and chew on them), but im not sure I want an herb garden yet. Does anyone know where I can get candelula(I think thats right) seeds?
