I do not own this machine, but but from what I did download the owners manual on it to see what was new on this model since it is made by LG now. The cold clean cycle is just a long cold wash meant for Small loads of cottens, lines, towels and sheets. You can add more time to any cold cycle on a washer and get this effect. The rugged cycle is for heavy soiled hard and thicj items such as jeans, or contruction work gear. Funny thing is, the auto soak is not an option for this cycle... its not really any different than the Heavy duty cycle.

Interesting....seems kinda scamish....so there is really nothing different functionality wise from what other machines can do? You just don't have to make the other selections or changes you now have a cycle set up with the ideal selections???

It does do tumblee differently than any other FL out there. The kemore will rock the clothes back and worth and about 4 other differnt way also, instead of just turning clockwise, then counter clockwise. Its best to view this on the Sears site. I wouldnt say the cycles are really scamish as most front loaders are no different. The different cycles are put in place so the owner doesnt have to push anymore buttons than needed, as this is a complaint from some owners. They want to push one cycle button and start. This washer does have some interesting features to it, such as it has the ability to measure the hardness of the water, amount of detergent in the wash along with soil level, suds level, and compensate wash times and rinses if so desired. Now how well all of this works, only the owner will know when they use it. Check out the model that you want on sears site and read the manual, that may help you out.

It's a very interesting machine (guess LG made). Some moves are already used by other manufacturers, e.g. the rollover move in handwash cycles.

The most scary move is that swing back and forth without pausing between reverse revolution. For sure it's an effective wash action, but IMHO it is also a stressing action for both shaft and bearings. The drum plus the load has some inertia during revolutions. I mean than when sudden reversion occurs, the load + drum is still moving e.g clockwise while the motor + shaft start moving anticlockwise.
It's like the shaft were somewhat twisted.

True, the very same thing happens in agitator toploaders while the stroke reverses. But here the agitator has to struggle just with wster resistance, non with the whole load plus the tub as in the Kenmore

Ditto on what hidroman said: unless LG improved bearings, drum spider etc. I don't think all those rocking motions contribute to a long product life...

Thats a great video in many ways! Now I can see how the wash motion works in real life, not a cartoon. It also reminded me of why I wash bed linens on sanitary cycle too. I would mind having one of the new kenmores...I hope I won the contest that Sears is having on them

Just go to a Sears store and get them to demo it. When we looked at them, the salesperson demoed the new wash motion for us. It must be some kind of button combo he did, but it sure looked great as the machine went through the different motion wash types. We bought the Kenmore Elite 40512 model without the steam. Consumer Reports said washer work just as well without the steam option.

Does the washer use these various wash motions during all cycles (e.g. normal / cottons) or different motions for different cycles (e.g. tumbling for Normal, but then rolling for Handwash)?

No it does not use all those wash motions on all cycles, maily on heavy duty, sanitary, maybe normal, not sure, its been a while since I read the manual.

Did LG intentionally remove some of these functions from the Kenmore line in order to be competitive?

I believe you are correct. When I purchased my Samsung-built Kenmore Elite Washer, the sister Samsung model (which looks identical minus the 'Samsung' branding, and has identical specs), the Kenmore version had a slower max spin speed (something like 1100 vs 1300 on the samsung). I asked the salesperson and they told me it's simply because Samsung doesn't want to 'give away' all their features (i.e. remain competitive), so they use the software to limit the speed to 1100rpm on the Kenmores. Seems to follow with the SpinSense option too.

I have the new Kenmore Elite 40512 and I can't tell whether it uses ANY of the fancy cycles. They just spins over and over like a normal FL. I have so far run the normal cycle, sanitize, delicate, bulky cycles. I have not seen the back and forth motion or any of the other ones. I am beginning to think it doesn't really use it... .

those AREN'T cycles but just particular motions that MAY be used in a step of a cycle.

Unless you sit down and stare at the glass door **all cycle long** you can't say if it really uses those moves or doesn't .

The only permanent "strange" move is the roll performed along the whole handwash cycle

If the machine would use the back and forth motion all cycle long that machine would not otutlast 2 or 3 years

I guess I misspoke. I do know they are not cycles, but simply wash motions. When I first had the machine delivered, I have stared at a cycle for quite some time, probably not the entire time. I still have not seen any of the fancy motions.

This is my last of a 2 year bout with frontload machines.. Do yourself a favor stick with the regular machine with an agitator! These new "green machines" don't use enough water and are more trouble than they are worth.

Lorimckay, why sell it on craigslist, cant you just go get a refund from the retailer? I have been reading great reviews about the new kenmore machines. I read about the issues you are having, Im not sure whats going on there.

Cgi....I dont think all of the new kenmores have the smart sense in them, it may be reserved for the top of the line model. I know the steam version of this washer has it.

Cgi....I just looked your model up, no smart sense. It seems to be on the kenmores that have the dark square front on them... not restricted to just the steam washer either
