Dawn Redwood, leaves turning reddish to yellow

I have a dawn redwood, about 3 feet tall and growing in a pot because I live in the city and don't have the luxury of putting things in the ground. We are experiencing our first fall together and the leaves are turning reddish to yellow on the tips.

My question:

Is this normal fall coloring of the leaves? I've seen other posts of pics of DR in the fall and they are totally red.

Or is it something else.

Not really red red like a Maple, but more of a reddish-orange to rusty bronze, depending on the light. In Ohio. Don't know about mild CA.
Looks better on a cloudy day or early morning.

Nice uniform color! Last couple years mine got a tad more orange and turned first on the inside then outside. Different but still a pleasing effect.

What's the PH? It looks like it could be a fungus, but unsure? Leaves do turn when in trouble. Espoma Soil Acidifier takes at least 6 months to work. If PH is high and the plant is struggling it is susceptible to disease. It could be a nutrient deficiency, if so, it's from high PH. First thing is get that PH right. About 4.5 would be good. Once there, you can tell better. A quick fix would be to add vinegar, even better and permanent would be sulfuric acid. I use battery acid to amend my water.

They do not like wet soil. They do need good drainage. Only water them when the soil is starting to dry out. They do not like too much fertilizer. I recommend only fertilizing once per year in the spring with a good acidic plant food like Holytone and at 1/2 of the recommended rate. Yellowing and dropping of leaves is normal, especially toward the end of the second summer on the small-leaved lepidote rhododendrons. These should have dense enough habit that this doesn't matter. The larger-leaved elepidote rhododendrons keep their leaves for 3 or 4 seasons. Like all evergreen plants, rhododendrons and azaleas periodically lose some of their foliage, and the leaves may turn yellow, red, or purple before they fall. Often the only leaves that remain are those that surround the flower buds at the tips of the branches. This characteristic is linked to the genetics of the parents used to breed garden azaleas. The degree of leaf coloration or loss is a function of parentage and not the severity of the winter. In unusually cold winters, certain azaleas may lose more leaves than they would in mild winters. Hi, Barbara, I have a friend who uses that unfortunate term - "A-Typical." I always have to ask him, "Do you mean, not typical? Or do you mean ultra typical?" But we've talked etymology long enough! I've got a dawn redwood planted in my front yard in South Jersey. It grew 4-5 feet in the first two years. Last year, the ends of the needles started to turn brown. Then every "leaf" on the branch started turning brown and died. I did some research and discovered that it may be causes by something similar to "Sudden Oak Death" syndrome. It's caused by a water mold pathogen. In addition to Oaks, scientists believe it may now be affecting Dawn Redwoods and other trees, as well. You can't overwater Dawn Redwoods. Related to the Bald Cypress, the Dawn Redwood soaks up water like a sponge and loves it. But, this isn't the problem. Dawn Redwoods can get a fungal pathogen that causes the needles to turn brown and eventually the entire branch becomes infected and dies. The fungal spores are spread by water and other affected trees nearby. No chemical on the market seems to kill the pathogen. Scientists suggest cutting the affected branches, removing the tree, etc. that isn't an option for me. I spent a lot of money on my baby and I'm not getting rid of it. I have a feeling the recent wet spring weather we've had here may be the cause. I got a copper based fungicide that I'm going to try. This fungal canker has already killed my two nectarine trees. So there you have it. Sudden Oak Death has destroyed about a million oak trees in California. And, this fungal pathogen I've just described is decimating Redwoods. The disease is called: Botryospheria Dothedia. Or Redwood Canker. As I said, it's a fungal disease. Almost impossible to treat and kill. That's why I'm trying a copper based fungicide spray. Anything is better than watching my dawn redwood slowly croak each day.

If you're name is Daniel and you live at the flowershop I believeI gave you that tree. If not, sorry. Yeah metasequoias sometimes drop leaves very beautifully, and sometimes they just start looking haggard and the leaves stay onto into december. There's one here in chicago that's thirty feet tall and still full, just turning ab it yellow, and here it is late november. As far as having it in a pot goes - you're in for a world of hell pretty soon. They grow fast as hell, might want to find a home for it because sooner or later in a year or so it will become rootbound and die. Transplant it to a bigger pot or look into root pruning. I'm serious man, those guys don't like NOT being in the ground. Maybe find somebody with a yard or some land and make sure they can water it and donate it to them?
I don't know, but hit me up if you need help, that's my favorite species. I donated a bunch around oakland.

Yes they are looking orange, but they haven't dropped yes. Guess its normal. Been in the city way to long to know what a tree should look like :)

We had a drought in my part of Ohio, so instead of nice fall coloration, all of the leaves on most of the trees in this area just turned sort of brown mid-September and dropped immediately. Horribly dissapointing.

Apparently you can grow these as large bonsais (and apparently, dawn redwood bonsais are semi-popular) but I have no idea how that works.
