Late Performers in Zone 8?

I'm wondering if anyone in Zone 8 (I'm in north Coastal SC) has any recommendations for LATE blooming cultivars--for us that would be those that are just beginning to open their first buds now and will continute through July. Any ideas?

Indian Ripple just opened its first flower three days ago; Peach Magnolia just about a week ago. Almost all others are done or reblooming.

Hello Mike, I have a few late bloomers, most of which were purchased from Oakes Daylilies. You can go to their website and click on Season: Late and daylilies will come up. Click on the picture and all pertinent info will be displayed. This year I bought Forsyth Flaming Snow. It was planted first week of April and it should produce the first bloom in 2 days. I have Tender Love which usually won't put up the first scape until July and it's about August when it begins to bloom. There is also Starstruck and So Lovely---So Lovely is blooming now and Starstruck has just popped the first blooms. Nearly forgot, Final Touch (a WalMart purchase)which bloomed for the first time today.
I know there is one called Lime Frost which won an award for best late bloomer, but I have no other information about it. You should be able to google a lot of this. Good Luck, and I hope you are able to find many late bloomers that will work in your area. Avedon

Mike, Key To My Heart is an early bloomer but is now starting to rebloom. Indy Snowfall is a late one and is just starting. Kent's Favorite is an early-mid and is now starting to rebloom.

Faye, I would think in zone 8 you could wait as late as November to plant your perenials. You want to give them at least 30 days to establish themselves before you get a frost. I'm no expert however, so I really suggest you call your local extension service. I used to wish my DH loved to garden also, but now I'm kinda glad he doesn't. I get to do it all my way :-). He does help me when I ask him to, I just have to be sure I really need his help, lol.

Welcome to San Antonio. It's not always this hot. I've been to Minneapolis in January and can say I'd rather live here even with the summer heat. Find things to do inside for a few months and then spend the next eight months outside. You will get lots of help here on this site, so don't hesitate to ask. Our weather in San Antonio isn't as tropical as it seems in the summer, we can get hard freezes in the winter so you have to choose plants that can handle both heat and cold or move your plants around accordingly. The big difference is that the next day it will warm up again. A GW San Antonio plant exchange is planned for Oct. 10 and we would love to see you there. Look for more info as it gets closer. Also on October 17 is the Herb Market and plant sale at Aggie Park. Master Gardeners are there to answer questions. @Ann Marie, I have a few climbers and ramblers on a trellis and my best advice is to make sure your rose is hardy for your climate by choosing ones that are atleast one or two hardiness zones below yours. That’s the best way to ensure cane survival through winter (right plant, right place). If the rose is near a wall that retains and reflect heat, then I do zone push and have had success with climbers my zone or one zone above. For example, I’m in zone 4b and I have no problems with New Dawn and James Galway surviving winter without protection on a northwest and southwest wall, respectively. As for training the rose, my approach is to tie the canes tight against the support so that it is secure and doesn’t whip around or rub. I do this in the late winter / early spring when the rose is dormant along with pruning so that I can see the rose’s framework. It also means that I’m working with only hardened canes (I never tie soft or semi-hard canes). I use simple garden twine and tie tight double knots. I don’t skimp and make sure the final rose frame work absolutely does not move. I tie the largest, most established canes to the support first, then the rest. I may even tie smaller canes to the bigger ones. Yes, it’s “crossing branches” but so long as they are tied tight and not rubbing, I find it’s totally fine. Key is no movement of any of those framework canes. I intentionally use twine because it blends in, is cheap, and will eventually degrade (since I do this all over again every winter/spring). If the rose cane is really old and has a tough bark and I know it’s not going to expand, then I tie into the support with black zip ties (gasp!). I’ll also mention that optimal blooms form on canes that are positioned between horizontal and 45 degrees. Here’s a pic of my William Baffin climber last year on a wooden trellis.

Prune it to the shape you would like at any time of year. We have Dr. Huey and it is not hurt one bit by pruning. It doesn't get diseases here and is very healthy. It will throw 12 ft canes that get in the way of the walk way so we always cut those off and tied some up. The flower production in the spring was never hurt, likely because there was so much of it. We are about to prune off some long throw canes from our Dr. Huey.

My two latest daylilies have just started blooming - ORCHID CORSAGE and CHOCOLATE CHERRY DREAMS. Still blooming on original scapes are TRAHLYTA, WILSON SPIDER, BIG KISS, SAVANNAH EXPLOSION, PERSIAN RUBY, AUGUST FROST and GREEN FLUTTER.

I am not sure how late bloomers translate to zone 8 and more south but I have gotten lots of really nice late bloomers by Jim Murphy at Woodhenge Gardens.

If you are open to somewhat plainer daylilies then try the late bloomers from Olallie. They have them broken down there were you just look by bloom season (late or early).

They are in Vermont. So if you want truely late ones pick the ones they say bloom in September or later. They do bloom earlier than that as you bring them south.

Another place you could look is a website I just stumbled across today that also organizes their daylilies by bloom season. It is called Bloomingfields Farm. It is in Connecticut, so there may be issues with some of their plants not performing well for you since you are quite a bit further south.

Note: I have no experience with them, so I have no idea how good they are to deal with, but just browsing their site might give you some ideas.

I had never seen that place before and find it interesting to go thru their catagories by bloom time. Most of those daylilies I don't grow so can't comment. I do grow Olallie Mack which they have in extra late and I would consider correct. Also I have Sandra Elizabeth and Olallie Mack is later. But Sandra Elizabeth is considered the bellweather for late bloomers and I think everyone should grow this one in their gardens. Pretty enough on it's own and a great one to judge other late performers by as far as bloom time.

If anyone wants to try three true very late bloomers from Olallie I recommend OLALLIE MACK, VT YELLOW SIGHTS and my personal favorite, BUTTERSCOTCH HARVEST which blooms into early October here in my garden. All of them are available there now under the late blooming catagory. BUTTERSCOTCH HARVEST is gorgeous. Their pictures aren't very good.

I am in the deep south. My first bloom was the 2nd of May. And Rita is so right. I have the first bloom today on one of my Woodhenge plants, Tree Turtles. Final Touch is good (the voles killed mine) and you might try Delayed Arrival.
