Becca, It's been shocked. If the limbs are green when nicked, it is alive. Keep it outside in as warm and sun drenched a spot that you have, and be patient. Any prediction of a possible frost and bring it inside, ASAP. You can get a freeze all the way to Memorial Day. Fig trees are very resilient though. The advanced buds probably got frozen. It only takes a short period of time at 32 degrees F. or colder to zap them dead. The more dormant buds should kick in very nicely, give it time. When it kicks in it will surprise you and take off. Vladimir..thx for the input. I do plan on following the Tapla formula. The only real variable I can see is the nature of the bark fines. We all are rather constrained by what is available to us, so fingers crossed the Soil Pep product will work I'm glad to hear you don’t have to water every day, because that is my main concern with this mix. Every 2-3 days I can handle. Of course I will keep a close eye on things especially during very hot spells. Debbie..my thought on soaking , since I am going to be making a rather large amount, is to mix everything in a large tub and wet it thoroughly. Probably put a tarp over it. Stir it periodically to make sure the bark is evenly wet. I am doing this because it seems one would want the mix uniformly hydrated before use, and to start having the lime do whatever it is supposed to do

I don't think it's vert wilt. The OP says the tree had fall color early on the stressed side. My experience with vert wilt is that the leaves do just that - wilt. Not color up nicely and drop. Where is this sugar maple located? Is it a cultivar or native tree? What kind of soil is it growing in? Have you had drought or excessive rains in recent years? Abnormally early leaf change is usually a warning sign of poor or stressed tree health. In my experience, trees showing these symptoms are often suffering root damage - whether it's a girdling root on that side of the tree, a hardiness issue brought on by lack of snow cover/drought, or potential root rot from sitting in heavily saturated ground for too long. It's possible the tree could recover but if it continues the early leaf drop, stunted new spring growth, and branch die-back, its days are probably numbered. If the buds never break, the branches are dead. Have any pics to share of this tree?

Most fruit trees that are bought from professional sellers are grafted, which means that a hardy root stock was attached to a fruit bearing top half. If your new growth is appearing from below the original graft, it will not give you Florida King peaches no matter how long you wait, because it has the genetics of the hardy root stock. Your new growth might give you a less tasty peach eventually and it might not, no way for me to tell from here. A picture would help us to know if your top growth is really dead or if patience would be helpful for you. The bottom growth is very likely to be useless to you. They are called suckers and everyone usually cuts them off each year.
