ripening... I think I can.. I think I can...

After I planted my tomatoes (sub arctic-25s and siberian), I learned that growing tomato plants up here is easy, but getting _red_ tomatoes is the challenge for Anchorage gardeners. Most don't ripen before the first frost.

The first ones on my plants are just starting to turn slightly orange, so I have hope for a few. With the average first frost being mid Sept, today I started pinching all the buds and flowers. I drew the line at tiny fruit. As a new gardener, it seems counter-intuitive to cut off the very things that I planted the plants for in the first place. But I am determined to have at least one red tomato from my garden!
