Because it didn't affect all the exposed leaves and I also see spatter burns on some of the other leaves on the plants, I would venture a guess that an animal peed on it, most likely a dog marking it's territory. Sun scald would have appeared much different. Urine will burn leaves much in that same manner.

I definitely have to dogs that use the backyard, I guess I need to put a short fence around the beds. Are they salvageable or done for?

They look like they may recover, just wait and see if they pull through, in the meantime put some sort of fence around it to protect them from any further assault. It will really depend if the roots were touched by the urine. You will lose the heavily affected leaves but the plants most likely will put on a burst of new growth after a bit of time.

Nothing grows where the doggy goes. LOL

Looks like they were started in a dixie cup and set outside before they were hardened off to me. Just start beans in the ground where there going to go. Those beans are spindly, and sunburnt. One more thing, that soil will be to rich to produce many beans, if you started the seeds right there they will grow fine and you will be proud of the plants but not many beans, [if I was a gambling man] that would be my bet.

What do you mean by too rich Sam? They were started inside and hardened off gradually for three days, then put in the ground.

FWIW, it looks a lot like a bit of freeze/frost damage to me. The unaffected leaves look like they were slightly more protected by the trellis & ground. I know in my yard, cold air can pool/swirl in some areas & nip sensitive plants, while other areas stay warm enough for protection - esp. near structures.

Also FWIW, the rule I know is that a plant can lose up to a third of foliage before it is compromised.

If that was my raised bed and I wanted to grow beans in it, I would have a lot more plain garden soil in the bed. Now understand I'm talking about a raised bed not a container or pot. Plant the beans where you want them to grow, theres no need for hardening off any beans, actually beans are very easy to grow, very littleeeeeeeeeeeee fert will produce quality and quanity. The plants in your picture are sunburnt, if you would have planted your seeds right there they would not have burnt up.

I got three different answers from three different people. :) This makes it hard to know exactly what I did wrong. :(

Because it is very difficult to judge exactly what happened from looking at a few pictures, we are like the three blind men describing the elephant.

We gave you three possible scenarios, now it is your job to make your conclusion based on what facts you actually know.

1. Did you have a frost just prior to what happened?
2. Did you allow ample time to harden off the plants?
3. Did you let your dogs out to relieve themselves?
4. Did you plant your beans in overly 'rich' potting soil?
5. Did you check if beans were better off directly sown?

Your job, Sherlock, is to come to a wise decision as to what could have caused the problem.
Before you plant anything, check exactly what that plant needs to grow healthy, do some research before planting anything willy-nilly.
The needs of plants differ very widely and 90% of failures could be eliminated through prior research about that specific plant.

Thanks for the reply Lou. One of those things above is for sure true, the top 3 inches of the bed is peat, vermiculite and compost, the bottom 14 is garden soil and potting soil. Maybe the bed is too "rich" though I honestly didn't know that could matter. I know you should direct sow beans, but I figured I could get an early jump inside like everything else I have going. I did harden the plants and there has been no frost. The dog urine made the most sense to me since I have a pair of dogs, that use the backyard. So I am gonna go with that for now and see where it leads me, thanks for everyone's reply.

Butter beans are planted just like black eyed peas, white acre peas, mississippi silver, etc. There commonly called field peas. Farmers grow them because they put more into the soil then they take out when you turn them in to the soil. Peas will actually fix nitrogen from the air and you will see little nodules on there roots, you can see them when you pull up a mature plant. Most farmers grow a crop of field peas between other crops. I used to grow a upick field in ruskin just a few miles west of you.
I think you should turn that rich soil into the soil [sand] beneath it. 1 or 2 cups of common fert for 10 square ft [very light], and plant your little butt off. One more thing butter beans or any field peas need very little water after there up and running. You can actually kill them with to much water. Good luck n go for it, its a lot of fun.

My beans don't like foliar feeding and they really really hate liquid fertilizer on their roots.

To me it looks like a chemical burn and one that was sucked up thru the roots and spread thru the leaf veins. I don't see a droplet splash pattern so I find your dogs innocent of all arial charges.

Buuut... do you have a cat or a neighborhood cat? Cats modesty and soft soil can kill a plant and your interest in fluffing the soil with your bare hand.

Just giving you a coupla more things to think about :)

I love speckeled butter beans and sure hope mine grow. I direct seeded about 10 days ago, but still haven't seen any shoots. I'm getting a little worried!

these speckeled butter beans behind me had to much nitrogen, as there only three weeks old.

Those HUGE plants behind you are 3 weeks old?

As you can see from my picture above they grow fast the third week. One more thing that I have found that helps, you have to keep your tounge on the left side of your mouth while planting butter bean seeds, all other seeds tounge on the right side, but I'm sure you knew that.

That's what happens when you put a dab on each side the seed before you plant it.
