where to find open-pollinated seeds cheaply

So, I used to lurk here a *lot* about a year ago - then my life fell all to pieces. I've just finally found a place to live that I think I'll be for a whole season, and I'm anxious to get my hands back in the dirt. The main problem is that I once had the most awesome collection of open pollinated seeds from mountain valley, and at some point my ex thought it was a good idea to throw away the whole bin full...

Where can I get small quantities of seeds at a reasonable price? I have so little money to my name these days that I can't justify a large order like I placed last year. Where do I look? I need a big variety of herbs, and a whole slew of spring/summer vegetables. I'm finally cooking again, and I miss my kitchen garden so very much... I'm already dreaming of a mountain of basil to turn into pesto.

If there is still any exchanging done here - that forum looks rather dead - all I have to offer are the Oriental Yard Long beans that mountain valley used to carry - well, those and an unlimited supply of stamps =P

Simple Living Institute, Inc. is hosting a seed exchange at Leu Gardens on Weds feb 17th from 7-9pm. You can come and trade your seeds or buy coupons at twenty five cents each to participate.

Some insect pests may be deterred by radish but I don't know of any. Radish will attract some pests however, notably flea beetles and cabbage root maggots. Nevertheless, I enjoy radishes and grow them. I use them to mark the rows of slow sprouting seeds, then eat them. I also plant them for their own sake. Floating row cover works well in keeping them free of insects. I don't know if that would work for your situation. Q: What's worse than finding a root maggot in a radish? Right off the top of my head, I don't know anyone who sells ONLY OP seeds here in AL. You can find some OP varieties just about anywhere you find garden seeds though...just have to know what you're looking for. If you resort to ordering online, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and Baker Creek offer good selections.

pretty sure Sandhill is organic or very close. Great people. Baker Creek is good but buys most of his seeds from other people. Probably almost all his seeds are grown by others. Sandhill grows most himself. But you should ask. I like Baker Creek also. Very nice company. Fedco has the best seeds at the best prices. Mostly organic. Has full organic certification on some seeds. Very high quality company. Very low prices. more of a coop then a money machine. So they sell low price to the farmers and people. This is my favorite seed company. A practical company that handles varieties with high yield and easy growing for the farmer who needs to make money from growing the seeds. Not necessarily will have a big selection of odd ball hot peppers that have low yield. What they have will be proven performance of high yield up north.

I second 'Breed Your Own Vegetables Varieties' by Carol Deppe. I have Seed to Seed and use that for my seed saving needs. She describes how to save corn seed very detailed and I am using that now, which is helpful. But I love Deppe's books because they are so detailed on the why's and how's that even someone who didn't have gardening experience could understand how to hand pollinate. You could find it at your library, but you will probably use her books so much, you will probably want your own copies. Lindsey

Pinetree has a great selection of OP & Heirloom seeds for low $$ coz they sell smaller quantities for home gardening.....

You guys are great! I did go ahead and order small quantities of a few things, and larger quantities of some others - when they arrive, I'll put the ones I've got plenty of up for trade. I didn't buy any herb seeds, though, so hopefully I'll have some things the herb folks around here are interested in =)

Mylonite, I am sorry to hear of your problems and I do hope that you are able to stay in your current location. Please take advantage of the offer from fellow gardeners that have posted above. We all share and do not wish anything in exchange. Gardeners are the most generous people you will ever meet and please feel free to post here. I wish I had something to offer you, but I purchase a lot of the $1 pacakages of seeds at WalMart and order a few things as my money is also very limited. Linda
