Is Cherry Belle or Crimson Globe Open Pollinated or a Hybrid?

During my second crop of radishes this spring, the bulbs didn't form well and were very hot/spicy. So I left them alone. Now a couple of them have bloomed and are forming seed heads. I was thinking I'd collect these for seed next year. I don't recall if I planted Cherry Belle or Crimson Globe. Are either of these varieties open pollinated or are they hybrids? Ie, will the seeds breed true?

Cherry Belle is OP as are all, or nearly all, radishes I believe.

Bump it! This thread satrted 8 years ago. There are a lot of interesting discussions and reports. The subject of tomatillo's fertility seems to be still not well understood. I, myself, have experimented with SINGLE plant , 3 times in 3 different season and have gotton the results proving that a single tomatillo plant is self pollinating and fertile. My last experiment was in 2013 season. Albeit , it came too late in the season here in PNW and the fruits inside the husk did not grow to full size I was going NOT TO plant tomatillo this year, but just to prove myself for the 4th time, I am going to plant JUST ONE again this year. I am going to plant it in a pot this time. I suspect, MAYBE, tomatillo is daylight/length sensitive and it won't set fruits when daylight is like 13 to 16 hours. That is why my plant last year suddenly burst into husks in August. Anther issue maybe the variety. As there are tomatoes that are tolerant to cold or hot weather probably there are similar tomatillos too. I will do a search about it and will report it here.

Carol, I'm glad you enjoyed the read. Now, get out there and rustle up some purple roses. They must be out there waiting for you! Ingrid, I feel the same way. Even though many are gone forever, I still wish I knew what they looked like. Knowing that a rose is bright rose and cupped just isn't enough. But OTOH, the catalogues that predate this era were simply non-alphabetical lists of rose names that might or might not mean anything to you. This "St. Patrick" guy seemed pretty thrilled to get a catalog with color info, and I appreciate his initiative to classify and alphabetize a list of 1000 roses. Virginia

I have "sort of" a plan to scatter radish seeds in all of my raised beds and and tansy in some of them next spring to see if they deter cucumber beetles and some other insect pests. I'll plant around and through them since they're small. If they "go bitter" or reseed themselves, that's fine with me. I'm glad, myself, to know they're OP.

Some insect pests may be deterred by radish but I don't know of any. Radish will attract some pests however, notably flea beetles and cabbage root maggots.

Nevertheless, I enjoy radishes and grow them. I use them to mark the rows of slow sprouting seeds, then eat them. I also plant them for their own sake. Floating row cover works well in keeping them free of insects. I don't know if that would work for your situation.

Q: What's worse than finding a root maggot in a radish?

A: Finding half a root maggot.

Radishes are supposed to repel striped cucumber beetles, root nematodes, & aphids.

Drat, if they attract other pests... I don't want NEW ones. Maybe I'll rethink my plan.

It's only the root maggots which trouble me, for the reason explained in my recycled "joke". Flea beetles don't do enough dammage to matter much, although I recently read that they can reduce yield noticably.

Floating row cover is the sure fire solution.
