Only a gardener would understand my behavior...

So....I have to share this because I can't tell my non-gardening friends as they will just think I've lost my mind. LOL...

This morning, I'm making coffee, breakfast, feeding the cats, etc....and, I look out the window and notice these whispy, flying-puffs of seeds. My first groggy thought was, 'Oh, how pretty...what is that?'

Then, it hit me - the butterfly weed seed pods have popped open!!! I'm losing all my seeds in the wind!!! OH NO!!! My plans to expand my butterfly weed plantings and attract more monarchs are literally being lost in the wind!

So - I drop everything I'm doing and RUN outside- still in my jammies -- and it's quite cold outdoors I might add! I immediately start collecting the remaining seeds that haven't blown away and start digging in the garden to plant them.

I'm just laughing thinking about it, but I know it makes perfect sense to you guys! ;-)

Sounds like very rational behavior to me ! very sensible, in fact i have been seen doing the very same thing only I manage to get my ratty old bathrobe on first and the folks walking their doggies down the street have something to stare at besides dog-poop, of couse they always look the other way when the doggie does poop and I am doing them a favor... sally

I understand.I rush out before Jim mows and dig up all the volunteer milkweed in the lawn to be planted elsewhere!

Lonicera - a vigorous (to the point of invasive) plant, but not at all fussy, takes dramatic shearing and pops back, and I will never tire of the fragrance. I keep it in bounds by growing it as a standard, which has the extra advantage of keeping the flowers at a convenient height for sniffing.

That is good to know about the deer netting. Are you just catching big rattlesnakes or will it work on copperheads? Do you find them dead or have to kill them? I am interested in the herbs mentioned. I like rosemary on chicken, herbs in turkey stuffing, and cilantro in salsa, but I am very ignorant of how to use herbs. I would like to know how you all use them. For some reason many people dislike cats. Also there are discussions on the morning show about being a cat person or a dog person. I am an animal person and appreciate both. I don't expect a cat to act like a dog. Both are lots of trouble, I spent most of today fixing the radio fence that shocks my dogs through their collars when they cross it. There is a big hungry German Shepherd that is either lost or dumped. I don't need another dog and don't want it to eat my cats or Honey a small dog. It is probably a good dog but it is trouble for me. I have much more trouble with my dogs every day. The cats are no problem. I have wood rats making nests everywhere when I go without a cat. I know people in town have to put up with other peoples' animals and children. It is easier to take if you love them and they belong to you.

It's actually funny that this thread popped up last week. I went through a similar situation myself. Saw some neighbors doing something - or I should say about to do something - very ill-advised, horticulturally speaking, and sent them a friendly email about it. Saying I couldn't help but notice and didn't want them to waste their money. I didn't even want to be so bold as to walk over there while they were outside. No need to invade someone's "personal space". But of course I saw this weekend that they did exactly what I told them not to do, a few days after getting the email which they acknowledged. I won't go into details but it involved planting a some shrubs. I mean, WTF? That guy who has 100+ blooming BLEs like rhododendrons and camellias in his garden? Couldn't possibly know anything about them! (actually similar to ilovemytree's situation, but with a plant less forgiving than lilacs and they were making even more mistakes) It's safe to assume these days that people are just going to be willfully stupid and that there's nothing you can do about it, unless they are close friends or family. I see nothing irratuibal about it. I have been known to run outside in the rain in a very thin nightgown that becomes almost translucent to rescue items. You do not want to know about the day I ran out in underwear to catch a hanging basket that was about to fall due to the high winds. I still hope all my neighbors were inside. Linda
