Pests In Tomoato Mulch/Soil

Hi again all!!

I am trying my hand at growing a tomato plant down here for the first time. It is an Early Girl variety, planted in a very large pot and growing like crazy!! I have it out in the sun all day, but I bring it on the lanai for storms/cold. It is planted in a very nice potting mix covered with about 2 inches cypress mulch. Fertilized about once a week.

Here is my problem....little flies!! Now, the flies are not on the plant or bothering it in any way, they are in the mulch, not sure if they are in the soil. There are hundreds of them and they are just annoying when I go to water. They are not the white flies I have read about being pests to tomato plants, they are what I would call a fruit fly. Small, black body, clear wings.

I am concerned about using a bug killer on an edible, even if the bottle says it is safe. Any home-made remedies for my pesky little friends??

Thanks!!

-Julie
