Roses in containers

User

Is growing roses in containers here in FL a practice in futility? I had no problem growing teas and chinas in containers up north but I cannot keep roses in pots alive down here. Is it too hot here? Do the roots cook? The roses do well for a while but sooner or later their leaves dry up and fall off en mass (and this damage is not from spider mites). Eventually the canes turn black. Do chilli thrips do this? Every cotton pickin' rose I ever tried has died this way. :-(
