I just put 7 bare root roses in containers do I hope so :)

I do have a rose in a large container that I've managed to keep healthy for 3 years. It does quite well actually. The rose is Gruss An Aachen. The container is grey plastic with two layers of plastic and some airspace in between.

I'm not sure what is wrong with your roses. The canes are actually black? Not that dried out dead brown color?

I have roses in containers that are ten years old.

In the winter I water every 3-4 days. In the very dry spring and all summer, I water every other day. Because of the frequent flushing, they also need more fertilizer than those in the ground.

Because your leaves dry up and fall off, I would say that they are not being watered enough. Also, they should be in a pot that has some size. A small pot will dry out much faster than a large one.

If you are buying the "body bag" roses they may be root trimmed so drastically that they will only survive with very careful care.

You also might want to change your potting mix.

I have one rose intentionally in a container, and a couple in containers (ie the pots they came in) that will be going into containers as well. Will be using John Starnes method of "water wise" containers and if my back holds out, digging a hole for them and dropping them into the ground, which should keep them cooler and less likely to "cook in the pot" in the summer.

My one in a large container is the only one of my mature roses that's doing well right now. Before my in ground roses take off this spring, the plan is to get them back to containers as well, as I fear that's the only way I can grow successfully in my neck of the woods.

I purchased my old roses from specialty nurseries via mail-order. I've grown roses successfully in Wisconsin of all places for 25 years but for some reason I cannot down here and it is depressing and discouraging to the max. I used 20" plastic pots purchased locally but maybe I'll have to try John Starnes method.

I've had roses in pots for many years. If they aren't old roses or on fortuniana rootstock, I haven't had much success in the ground. If you bought old roses many of them do wonderfully in the ground. Is that an option? My biggest issue with pots has not been drying out but being too wet. The black canes can be from rot. When I switched to Walmart's Expert Grow Potting Soil, which unfortunately our local Walmart no longer carries, the roses did so much better. Also it helps if the pots are a light color. Put in lots of big holds in addition to the ones there. If it is sitting flat drill some low on the sides of the pot. The beauty of pots is if it is very hot, they can be moved into some afternoon shade.
Chilli thrips damage if on the blooms, you will see brown streaks and the leaves near the bloom will be wrinkled.

I've grown roses in containers for years. Some are in huge black pots, others are in huge terra cotta pots. One thing I've learned is, roses need regular deep watering. I grow some in the ground too, I've lost some in both the ground and pots. To me the best are the old garden varieties. One of the roses in a huge terra cotta pot is "Love" with the reverse coloring on petals. I've had it for about 7 years now. Two others in terra cotta are Kathleen and Cocktail, both maybe 12 years or so.

I love roses and just bought Fragrant Cloud, and hope I didn't make a mistake there. Some people say they get no BS and I don't use sprays. I'm going to start a post here asking if anyone grows this and what there experience is.

Roses do grow in florida. I just got my first rose about a year ago and it is thriving on my balcony. I live in an apartment so all my plant grow on the balcony, and my rose does wonderfully, it's 'Belinda's Dream', I am hoping to get one of the david austin varieties (I know there are thousands), any one have suggestions?

It was very young when I got it, I think it is only 2-3 years, but it need a bigger pot, so maybe I'll get a small austin rose to put in its place for a while.

Would the roses do better if grafted onto fortuniana even though the will be containers? The roses I had were all own-root old garden roses (teas and chinas mostly). Would those awful chilli thrips be causing my roses do die?
