Who can help with Parade rose questions?
Comments (20)Here is my story about Parade. Some years ago I bought a small one gallon Parade from Chamblees - dont think they carry it anymore. Due to the demands of nusing school, it stayed in that one gallon pot for a couple of years - it got watered but little else. Cant imagine why it didnt die. Finally, after graduation when I had some time, I planted it in the ground by a large arbor. Within days, it started growing - like Jack in the Beanstalk! I was amazed. Now, it is huge with thick, and yes, thorny, canes that are easily trained on my arbor. It is a wonderful bloomer with a beautiful fuschia color. I love it! It would be worth hunting it down - I just got an order in from Roses Unlimited - they send healthy plants ready to grow. Getting it in band form, it would probably be next year before you would see blooms. I checked, Chamblees doesnt list it. ARE sends beautiful plants, but if you didnt want to spend that much, sounds like RU would be your best bet. I love my Parade and know you would be happy with it. I moved Zephrine Drouhin from another home. After 3 years it put out a few blooms. When it died it was not mourned and not replaced. Parade is an older rose that should be used more - it is tough, a survivor, and blooms well. I do spray so cant comment on disease hardiness. Your money will be well spent with this rose! Comments (36)Oh my, sorry to hear about the ankle. Ouch! I live in zone 5 in Omaha, NE, but I grew up in NW Iowa. I am guessing you have rich black dirt. I was so surprised moving to NE to learn that not everyone has that pretty dirt...lots of clay in the soil here & it is orange/brown. What part of NW IA are you in? I grow Distant Drums, had 2 but lost one over the winter a few years back. I think it may be one that isn't as hardy. I also have Country Dancer. It has thrived and is about 4 foot wide and 3 foot tall right now...It is about 8-9 years old. Most of my roses are grafted and I plant the graft deeply (got that great advice here). I have around 75-80 roses. I usually lose about one a year, though this year we had such a mild winter, they all did very well. I don't do a lot to winter protect with so many roses. I generally let the oak leaves blow around them & call it good. Of course I will baby a few of my absolute favorites! But if you only have a few, I would mound up dirt around the base in the fall....See MoreRoses for my area
Comments (12)If you want Buck roses own root I would advise you to check out Chamblee's as alternative to RU - half price and much, much stronger plants. Based on my experience of the roses I got this year I would not recommend Roses Unlimited, especially not for someone in a cold zone and to someone who is new to roses. (The Chamblee's 1 gallon Earth song should be in 3 gallon on the day it arrived while most of my RU plants still should be in a small band, 2 months after their arrival, except the one that is already dead because after 6 weeks of gradual "adjusting" I was silly enough to plant it in the ground. It passed away in two weeks. I have 16 years of rose growing experience...) As to the new Kordes roses, I agree with kennaga.mnts: get them from Palatine or Pickering grafted and don't even try the very weak own roots from RU - they are not for Iowa winters except if you want to overwinter them in a greenhouse. But if you can get some Bucks grafted, even better though Chamblee's plants are excellent. Of the roses the local nurseries offered to you, Cherry parfait is the best IMHO. It is a grandiflora, very healthy even in the humid southeast, and it is blooming all the time. Only problem with it is that it has no fragrance. I heard a lot of people praising Love but I don't have personal experience with it. I would not buy Peace from any local nursery because it is probably virused - I would get it, if you must have it, from one of the Canadian nurseries, grafted on multiflora. All the Peace cultivars grafted on Dr. Huey are suspect and you will find only dr. Huey grafted Peace offerings in US nurseries. Having said that I must add that I know nothing about the hardiness of Peace in Iowa....See MoreI need advise on what roses to buy?
