Why deciduous ancient conifer species?

I think it's interesting that many of the living-fossil conifers are deciduous. I'm thinking especially of Dawn Redwood and Gingko.

There are others -- though perhaps not so ancient (Bald Cypress, Pond Cypress, Montezuma Cypress, Glyptostrobus). (Where do others (Larch, Golden Larch) fit on the scale of antiquity?)

Are there others?

These are all essentially of the Northern Hemisphere now and through time, I believe.

(The ancients now of the Southern Hemisphere (Araucariaceae)are evergreen. Are there deciduous ancients from the Southern Hemisphere?)

Questions: What does science say about why some conifers became deciduous? I guess I've assumed it might be an adaptation to severe winters. If that's true, how would it explain deciduous ancient conifer species? Winters were less severe when they came up, no?
