if you go back to that tree next try and airlayer it for better results. I am doing that right now with two branches. you could chill in for at least one or two weeks to force it to go dormant. this stat is more stable when rooting. keeping it in water will also do if you keep the water clean, I rooted 4 cuttings this way also. I fought varmints in my massive blackberry garden to the point where i built a cage 8 ft high by 40 feet totally enclosed sauirrels would crawl all over the cage and look in longingly, as the chipmunks ate my strawberries,,,,so i resorted to extreme measures on the ”cute” chipmunks eradciation you dont sound like a moustrap type. but you INSPIRED me to get priactive on my GIANT fig tree in Palm Springs …..will feed the birds elsewhere but we aee bats!

Over a period of many years I have tried a variety of methods to get, in plain words me more fig trees to give away to friends and people I meet that show an interest in growing them. The method that worked well for me is the same as Bass stated by just placing a cutting into a good quality potting soil in a small container with good drainage holes provided. I know over the years that I given out over 150 trees using that method but for some reason this year has been a bummer. The cuttings will not root for me. I'm placing the blame on the weather conditions this year because I keep the potted cuttings on my southern facing covered patio's brick wall. There they get the warmth from the southern facing wall and not direct sunlight but lately we have not had much sun and the days we did get sun the temps where really up there during the day and down during the nights.. I water them so they never dry out. I've done new wood cuttings with just as much success as I did using last years wood until this year. That's why my interest in air layering question asked to make sure I have the information to get it done correctly and have results in the end. I have three people waiting for trees. I wonder if I charged for the trees if anyone would want them. I do it for a hobby and I just can't get myself to throw away any branch I cut from my olive, lemon, bay leaf and fig trees. I just have to pot them up to try and get them growing. I usually give the people I give a tree of any variety I have printed up growing instructions epically if they live in our area where the best method to grow them is in containers and store the covered in a garage or shed during the winter months. Your trees were pruned to be trees, not bushes. They appear to be at least 3 years old. Really hard to tell age because some trees are more vigorous than others. For instance, I had a Fig in a pot for two years, then planted it in ground. Suddenly that little thing trippled in size and it's trunk(s) became thick. Now it's huge, and I think nobody would guess it's only 4 years old. It's got about 15 figs per branch and there are a lot of branches. Every year, as your trees grow older, they will put out more figs. Really hard to know what a potted fig can produce. A lot depends on variety too. I don't have LSU Purple, but my Celeste is very productive. At 2 years old, it has about 20 figs, but it's still in it's pot and has worked it's way into the ground. This year when it's dormant, it will be planted in ground. You'll just have to be patient and wait. The figs will come. We get mild snow fluries here in winter maybe for a day or two, so planting in containers isn't important, but many who live where it snows have to bring their containers in for protection from freeze. I know you rent so want to take them with you. Good plan! :-)
