Oh, what beauties! That's a lot of holes for you to have dug for those bulbs. Were they all planted at once, or gradually you add another varieity and then they multiplied? Now what do you do to them once they are finished blooming? My guess is that you have to wait till the foliage dies back or do you choose to wait so long, then cut it back to the ground? That's the only thing about planting bulbs. Guess I'm an impatient gardener! It would be hard to choose a favorite but the double apricot one wins my vote. Thanks for sharing your photos with us!

Mary Lu, I look forward to your photos every year. What beauty you have created! I absolutely love the column post in the dayliy bed. What do you have planted on top of it this year? I've often thought of copying your idea on that but I hesitate because of keeping it watered. Great shot also of the daylily with the clematis seed heads. Thank you for sharing!

Mary lu, What beautiful daylilies you have blooming. Everything looks so healthy. I love the curves in your garden, and your yard looks so neat. You have done a beautiful job. You need to show everyone the 'whole' picture with your outdoor living space with the fountain, and your carriage house garage. Photos of your whole property belong in a magazine.

We finally got 3" of rain since Friday, July 9th. Now the weeds are growing like crazy, but the lawn still has a ways to go.

Thanks everyone! It has really been HOT here this week! On Wednesday we had a heat index of 117 degrees and it was still +107 at 10 PM in the evening! Needless to say the DL's are opening fast! And I am staying in the A/C in the house! :-)

What do you use to fertalize them? They are amazing! Thanks for sharing.

Those beds are beautiful. The shapes of the curves are just right, very pleasing. I love your "plant on a stick." I have never seen such a pretty use of a column- it should be used much more often. After everyone sees these photos, I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

Oh yeah- Pippi- daylilies and tb irises are not bulbs, per se. They do not necessarily lose their foliage in the winter, so there is nothing to cut back.

MaryLu, what a beautiful bed of daylilies. I'm planning a bed of daylilies along a fence and I will definitely be using your pictures as reference. Did you plan anything in reference to color, height, etc....or did you just plant with no particular rhyme or reason? The bed is just beautiful with such a nice flow of color. I've been betwixt and between about if I should plan or just plant them randomly. After seeing your pictures I know one thing for sure.....the bed is going to be expanded! How many daylilies deep do you have planted at the widest parts of the bed? And how many feet deep is the bed? Thanks for any extra info! If my daylily bed can be half as beautiful as yours when I'm done I'd be so pleased.

Do you have any tips for keeping the foliage so nice and green? Mine seem to fade into an anemic green once it gets hot/they bloom. Do you fertilize? How often?

Do you know the names of your daylilies? I would love to know what the last three are and that light yellow one in pic #6.

I will try to answer some of the questions...

fertilizer....this year, only Preen and Green in the spring on the bed. Some years I have used what is called Hooker's formula and others times Miracle Grow. I do use Preen and Green every spring on the bed.

The bed contains 60 named DL's. My DH picked them all out. He also placed them in their locations. Started out trying to do by size/color, but ended up just "plunking" some of them. I did the planting. :-)

At the widest part I believe the bed is about 16 feet deep.

Picture #6 is Megan's Love. It was picked because our granddaughter is named Megan.

I do have a lot of single bloom pictures on my web site and they are named in the picture, if anyone is interested in the name of a specific bloom. I believe I have pictures of most. I will post a link to the page below.

The shape of the bed is shown quite well on another page on the web site. If you look at the links at the bottom of the daylily page, you will see a link to a page called "Other Projects". Near the bottom of the Other Projects page there is are aerial views taken before and after the bed was planted.

I really don't do anything special, just let nature take its course for the most part. Some of the foliage does get kind of yucky looking some years, but as there is so much, maybe it is not so noticeable? The bed has been planted 5 years so next year I will probably have to start splitting out some of the ones that have multiplied more rapidly.

Sounds like you have a wonderful retirement home and garden! Also sounds like you have lots of work still left to do. I look forward to reading your future posts and seeing pictures. :-)

The daylily bed was designed in fall of 2004 and planted in 2005. Time does fly, doesn't it? There are still regulars from back then that also post occasionally. Also many new gardens and poster since then. I too do not post as often as I did when the gardens were being developed, but do stop in fairly regularly.
