Weekend pics from the Pacific Northwest

It has been a glorious weekend of daylilies in my garden Lots of color, and lots of my favorites starting to really put on a show. I posted my "bright" blooms in another thread to keep the length down, but here are some of the others that I really liked this weekend.

CREATIVE ART...I bought a lot of plants from the Valley of the Daylilies sale last fall, and this is the first to bloom. I picked up mostly yellows and chartruse(sp?)that were supposed to be good performers. I love that color as a "backdrop" kind of bloom for the flashier and bolder colors. I thought that this one was just lovely.

JAMAICAN MUSIC

PRICKLED PETALS is one of those daylilies that doesn't often reach it's "true" color and form in my yard, but I really like it in all of it's faces.

PRINCE OF MIDNIGHT had just kind of "hung out" in my garden for about eight years. A couple of scapes...a few nice blooms. This year it has just outdone itself. It has had at least 5 blooms on it every day since it started.

RESPIGHI is absolutely huge and wonderful.

TUSCAWILLA TIGRESS will always be in my top 10.

I love the way Prickled Petals looks in your garden. The eye pattern is amazing! The garden shots are just a wonderful jumble of color. I enjoyed the show.

Oh Julie, what a beautiful garden. I just love the color, color and more color. I like the rocks used as edging too, gives it a country cottage garden feel. I love the "hot" beds.

Of the closeups I truely like the first, CREATIVE ART the best. I don't know whats with me this year but lately I have been very drawn to yellow daylilies.

Mike, and others, I appreciate your positive perspectives. While books, magazines and 'experts' create gardening 'laws', these are really meant for the uninitiated, those lacking ambition or those who don't want to wander too far off the proven track for gardening success. While I can appreciate the typical garden, I didn't want that for my own setting. People seem to want to be unique but a lot of them still seem to end up buying a red sports car, a blue minivan for the family and a golden retriever. Doing something different or unique is inherantly challenging and there is plenty of risk. There's certainly no guarentee that my gardens will turn out exactly as I planned them but per the cliche, usually life is about the journey, not the destination. As my gardens evolve, it will be interesting to see what worked great, what didn't work at all and what new things I try as opportunities present themselves. Hopefully however I mold it, my gardens please ME first and my neighbors/visitors second. I wouldn't want to live with a garden everyone else considered great if I myself didn't enjoy it. Mike I do want to say that your garden photos have had serious impact on my views and plans longterm. To me, it's a near perfect, lifelong project of intermixing a wonderful mature setting with collector and rare selections. I can't imagine designing something as majestic - but I can try! Here's a few more photos, I'm hopeful people enjoy them(but this isn't required! :) Pots, extending the garden onto the deck. My simply, but effective paths. Seperating shade from sun gardens. The Southcenter AL didn't have anything special in the way of hoods when I was shopping last year. The manager said that their Lynnwood store (closer for you than driving to Southcenter) had many more hoods. That is also where they would send the AL employees for "training" on hoods. (I put training in quotes because I believe that they aren't taught as much about proper ventilation, etc., as they are just shown the offerings of their hood manufacturers.) VAH wasn't pushed on me heavily, but it does seem to be what they lead with. I received good phone customer service from Metropolitan in Sodo after Rhome410 highly recommended I speak with Jim there, but have never been in so can't speak to their hood selection. I think overall you won't find many island hoods for viewing in general around here. If money weren't an object (and you will get a better deal with being able to deal directly with the factory), I'd happily buy an MA sight unseen. I bought my clearance Rangecraft sight unseen and was not disappointed at all with the quality of the fit and finish. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

Pacific Northwest Road Trip - Which Nurseries To Visit?

I have done this trip(s) and agree with all of the above. However if I had to pick 2 or 3. Near Portland, I would visit Iseli's display garden, (make sure you have an extra memory card for the camera) . If you have time I would drive out to Mt Hood, (it is not a garden but it is impressive to see such an impressive mountain ). Portland Japanese Garden is also very impressive ( and a great view of the city) . If any one in your family like water falls - Some of the best waterfalls near Portland, Oregon, exist in the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area east of the city. The scenic area protects at least 77 waterfalls that include horsetail, tiered and plunge formations. Five of the falls are within a 45-minute drive of Portland. The Oregon garden is very nice, but it is south of Portland and a long drive. ( save it for next time) Then in Seattle - you should visit the Market and the surrounding area, try to fit in a ride on any of the ferries. Gardens in Washington Kubota Garden, Coenosium (Nursery) , Coenosium Rock Garden at South Seattle Community College. You probably will not have time but a drive to the Olympic National Park is definitely worth it. I have the American Conifer Society to thank for introducing me to the PNW many years ago and have returned a few more times. The full garden photos are great, and I agree about the pattern on Prickled Petals -- it's terrific.

Funny about Prince of Midnight. I had that daylily for about five years with no blooms and finally gave up on it and shipped it elsewhere.

Prickled Petals it to die for. The Nicotiana is a perfect companion plant for dayliles. It doesn't distract from the blooms.

I agree, Creative Art is just beautiful!! And Ra Hansen is gorgeous too. Your gardens are WONDERFUL! Everything looks so vibrant and colorful. I don't have any gardens like you guys have yet, but I am so inspired by your photos. I have actually gotten quite a lot of good ideas on planting combos from this forum! So, thanks to you and everyone for the garden pics!

Wow,Julie;You have some beauties here.I love that PRICKLED PETALS.Its gorgeous.RA HANSEN is very nice too, love purples and lavenders.RESPIGHI is gorgeous, too.Your garden shots are terrific.I love them.Your garden is so pretty and lots of color in it.Gives me ideas for my own,as I have always loved them NICOTIANA plants.I use to plant them e very year in my own gardens,then I suddenly stopped and planted some thing different.Time to get back to them again,as I had forgotten just how pretty they are,and they are so easy to grow them. LOved your photos.

Wonderful garden shots with all the colors going on. I really like that Prickled Petals and I'm not usually into yellows a whole lot but Steve Trimmer has a wonderful eye and edge and that's what I am into.

I bought Jamaican Music last year and it is just gorgeous this year.

wow the RA Hansen is my favorite - wanna trade any?? I just got the TUSCAWILLA TIGRESS and RESPIGHI from the actual place where they are grown for $8.oo each and love your RA Hansen.

Wonderful photos Julie, especially love your garden shots. Your garden is beautiful, BTW.
I've never seen PP with a patterned eyezone like that. That's very different. Wish mine would do that. Here's what it looks like in my garden.

Wonderful pics and your garden looks like it is thriving. PP is certainly an unusual bloom. Looking at Jan's photo, it sure doesn't look like the same daylily. I do like the way it opens on yours.
