Finally some blooms in the Pacific Northwest!

We have finally warmed up and I actually had more than one or two nice daylily blooms this weekend. Our very early spring was warm, so scapes started coming up earlier than normal, and then we got hit with almost three months of cool wet weather which kind of brought everything to a halt. Most of the first blooms were distorted or just didn't open right. We finally got some heat (60 degrees for months, and then up to 95 overnight... I know that some of you who have been going through such awful heat spells won't sympathize, but that difference is hard to adjust to!) The daylilies loved the heat change though, and I thought that I would share some of the blooms that I enjoyed over the weekend. Most of my earlies/ early mids are older daylilies, but clumped up, I think that they are every bit as impressive as some of the newer ones.

BESS ROSS

CELEBRATION OF ANGELS never has the color for me that it does in warmer climes, but it is sure a bloom machine.

EYES A BLUE is in my top 10. It's bud count and branching is very impressive, and it is just plain lovely.

FORBIDDEN DREAMS is one of my chameleon daylilies, never looking the same from day to day. This is it's FFO face after scaping in cool weather...

MISS JESSIE

NOON LIGHT always looks like it is lit up from within. I had several daylilies poly this weekend, including this one.

And I'll end with a garden pic... from no blooms to this almost overnight. What a surprise!

Julie - I love the garden shot. It's just a wonderful explosion of color. Your daylilies are all beautiful. I especially liked the shots of Blue-Eyed Butterfly and House of Orange.

I love the third shot and especially the view of your garden. Those blooms do just sneak up on you, don't they? Suddenly everything is in full bloom.

Hi Tess, those varieties sound good....esp. Liberty, Spartan, William's Pride....you definitely want scab resistant apples. As for your arborist, he is half-right in that it is undesireable to protect the whole pear tree (probably) but individual pears can be protected next year.....we talk about bagging fruit on this forum and you should learn more about that......as for age of pears, the Fowler Pear tree by the Mukilteo landing north of Seattle has a Seckel pear tree planted in 1862 and still producing and if you come to our Harvest Fest in Carkeek Park you can see 120 year old apple and pear trees www.pipersorchard.org......final note: since I "advertise" this gardenweb.com website for growers that ask questions , perhaps I can advertise the www.homeorchardsociety.org website for people with questions in the Pacific Northwest.

Summer here in Ohio... for the last week we have been in the upper 70s... yesterday and today we are at 80. However, the weekend and next week shows a cool down. Highs in the mid to upper 60's... lows in the mid 40's. This is where we should be. All of my Acers are budding out & the hostas are coming up. As far as conifers, the only one that just started this morning to grow is my Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst'.

As I remember the longest dimension was 40-something feet at that time - if this particular example is in Bob's book my measurements will be shown there. I don't remember how the overall shape of the tree affected the averaging of the crown spread, if it was very narrow in the direction going across the fence rather than along it then that would have shaved the total down considerably. (Jacobson, Trees of Seattle - Second Edition (2006) lists one at Kubota Gardens as the biggest (11 ft. by 5 ft. 4 in. by 32 ft.) Seattle specimen). >Not looking so good now< Many of these are being hammered by blight and bugs in recent years. My recollection is that Kay Takeda used to come into the Everett Teufel when I worked there. I also looked at her store driving by, but never went in - not many plants were visible.

I love the garden picture and the hot colors. I do agree that the older ones are stunning in a clump and don't require the fussing that the modern ones do. I am going to pick forbidden dreams as my favorite just because it is so unusual. I have never seen another like it. But each one is really lovely. I am glad that you are finially getting blooms!

Wow! That garden shot is absolutely beautiful!!!Thank you for posting it. I'm sure the wait has been hard, but you have some beautiful blooms now. I really like Forbidden Dreams, but the garden shot takes the cake.

It has been sweet torture seeing all of your beautiful postings and still having a colorless garden, so it was fun to be able to finally post a few.

My garden shot is of the first daylily garden I ever built. It is on a steep bank, and I would have definitely done it differently (ie. left a path through it)if I were to do it over again now, but the oldest section covers about sixty foot of bank and it is definitely an eye popper when it is blooming.

It's 6/7/11 and my DL's are pathetic. Anyone else's scaping poorly, though lushly leafy? Is it the cool, damp spring this year?

Wow, love these pictures! Makes me want to pack up and move to the Pacific Northwest! Especially after months of no rain and now blistering summer heat. The wait for daylily blooms has definitely been worthwhile! Now it's your turn to post the lovely pics -- mine have just about finished blooming.

I've got to add Forbidden Dreams to my wish list.
