Road Trip - Getty Malibu (extremely photo heavy)
Comments (14)Woody, about being rich enough, Getty's choice to make a re-creation of an ancient villa was, in architectural circles, thought to be quite cheesy and not the best use of all his dough. I'll leave such debates to the experts. Mitch even mentioned the crowd he runs with disdains the Getty as an elite "white man's" enthusiasm, not representative of other cultures, etc. If a guilty pleasure, so be it... PM, the Italian cypress is often planted near cemetaries and holy sites in Italy, which is in large part due to their nondisruptive root systems. Re the photos, when I sharpened the image through Picassa, the water drops came into focus. I like these simple fountains too, that could easily reside at a private residence. (And Mitch is a tad over 6 feet!) Kathy, it was a beautiful day. I don't get out to Malibu much anymore, since the drive through the westside and Santa Monica is always so jammed, and PCH backs up. But the drive was easy, no traffic, the ocean was full of surfers bobbing in the waves. Back in high school, I drove out to Malibu quite often with my buddies (occasionally during weekdays! ahem...)...See MorePacific Northwest winter plants for hummers
Comments (7)Hi again Marene : ) Here is another link that talks about using Sarcococca and Witchhazels below. http://www.thenewstribune.com/adventure/columnists/story/4409647p-4183480c.html Here is some more great info from Ciscoe for Puget Sound gardeners and others in the Pacific Northwest: "Add lively winter interest to your garden. Anna's hummingbirds tend to stay here during winter. To attract them, plant shrubs and perennials that bloom with nectar-rich flowers in winter. Fuchsias and Abutilons (flowering maples) are alluring food sources that often continue to bloom until Christmas. Another seductive perennial is Schizostylis coccinea (crimson flag). This 2-foot-tall South African native is totally hardy here and in a mild winter the red or pink flowers may bloom all winter long. Hybrid Mahonia 'Charity' and 'Winter Sun' bloom in the dead of winter and hummingbirds are crazy about the fragrant, yellow spikelike clusters. A surprising food source is witch hazel. Hummingbirds love the spidery flowers and rely on them for nourishment in midwinter. In late winter, they find sustenance in the fragrant flowers of Sarcococca and Darwin barberry. If you want to hear your hummingbirds shout "oh, la, la!," plant the Australian shrub Grevillea 'Canberra Gem' (there's a limited supply available at Jungle Fever Nursery in Tacoma). The dazzling red flower clusters last all winter and drive hummingbirds (and gardeners as well) into frenzies of lust!" - Ciscoe http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/nwgardens/190912_ciscoe16.html Again, take care, Mike : ) Here is a link that might be useful: Winter hummers in the Puget Sound region...See MoreSmall Nurseries Road Trip
Comments (9)Thanks for all these new road trip places to visit! The other direction we go often if up to St Clous area. We go up I-94 then cut over to Hyw 10 at Rogers. That way we can stop at 101 Market in Otsego which has grown so much over the years. You can see it off Hwy 101 between Rogers and Elk River on the south side of the road. 101 Market 763.441.4487 8980 Quantrelle Ave E Then up Hwy 10 where we stop at every little nursery going up to St Cloud area. You could also hit Busse's on one of their open house weekends. I don't remember how to get there just that it is out in the country. Maybe someone else remembers. There I meet up with my sister and niece to hit our favorites in the St Cloud area: Fairview Gardens 320.980.3648 1080-35th St NE Sauk Rapids Raetz Scenic Nursery 320.252.8316 4355 Mayflower Rd NW Sauk Rapids Rosewood (both in St Cloud & Sartell) 527 Pine Cone Rd Sartell 320.251.2761 1112 Washington Memorial Dr St Cloud 320.253.7264 www.rosewoodfloral.com Thomson Greenhouse & Garden Center 320.363.7375 29756 156th Ave St Joseph www.tgreenhouses.com Hope this gives everyone some more of their own future road trip ideas. Comments (6)To get to Busse's you take Hiway 10 through Elk River to County rd 15-go north to 245th Ave (about 8 miles or so) take a left, follow to end. Here is their open house schedule: May 4 - 7 May 11 - 14 May 18 - 21 June 2 - 4 June 9 - 11 June 16 - 18 July 21 - 23 August 18 - 20 August 25 - 27 September 8 - 10 If anyone heads up 35W, there is a nice place just south of North Branch called Branch Landscape Nursery. 35W to NB exit, go right, thru town, turn Sounth on Co Rd 30 (Old Hwy 61). 1-1/2 miles to 372nd St, turn left, nursery is 3/4 mile down. Or you could take the Stacy exit and hit Wayne's Nursery on Hwy 61 just north of town, then continue on up 61 to NB. Green Barn Garden Center on Hwy 65 just south of Isanti is a good one, too. There is one in Chisago City, too, that is supposed to be fun. I'll get the name and post it later. Linda...See More- M Hyatt thanked David Olszyk, President, American Conifer Society
