honeysuckle vine horror

This is not a pretty picture. This happens every year. I am running out of patience with this problem. Last year I tried insecticidal soap, spraying with a hose, and resorted to stronger measures using Endall with detrimental results.(The leaves turned black and fell off)

I hope someone can help this poor vine.

Here it is today. This is just starting and is already really bad.

This white stuff is aphids. They are that thick on the stems.

Hi there,

I've found this to be a terrible year for aphids. The ones on my plants aren't wooly aphids like yours but rather plump little light green ones. I have them every year on my lupins but this year they are super bad. What works for me is to mix 1 tsp of liquid dish soap into a spray bottle (16 oz/455 mL)full of water and then I spray it directly on the aphids. In about 5 minutes the aphids that have been sprayed are all dead. Unfortunately I never seem to get all of them so every couple of days I have to go out and repeat the spraying but it is definitely keeping them under control.

I started out with a more concentrated soap solution but found that this turned the leaves black if I didn't rinse it off within about 10 minutes. Now that I've reduced the amount of soap to the 1 tsp/bottle concentration I can spray it on and leave it without rinsing and the leaves don't get damaged.

Another thing that works for me is I have quite a few ladybug larva around the yard at the moment so I keep moving them onto my lupins and the plants that have the most ladybug larva have the least aphids.

Try a product called Ambush its a fruit tree spray works great.

I have not been on this forum, in particular, for awhile The other day I came across a house that is to be demolished The gardens are all overgrown. I dug up a few things, and whomever had the property had spent a great deal of time in that yard What attracted me was how wildly gorgeous the orange honeysuckle vine has grown.Or coral as you have written I did not bring any of the vine with me. as I wasn't sure if it grows from cuttings or needs root. The bulldozer will be there I was told Monday morning. I will get back over and get some cuttingsbut would like to hear from you as to what is best to do.

Penny, Thanks for referring me to to Mail Order Natives. It looks very reasonable and has a few items of interest to me. It's already getting cold here in Michigan, so it looks like the rest of my planting will be done in the spring. Winter likes to come early here, then sometimes makes a return in the spring. Jenny, the goldflame was the first honeysuckle that I really liked. Well, the Harlequin too, but I couldn't find it locally at the time. I was also interested in the Mandarin or a coral honeysuckle, like penny recommended. I will see how it goes with the goldflame, although I think I probably should've purchased the mandarin. Gardening is a bit of a luxury for me that I can easily go overboard with, so I'm trying to research what I'm buying, it's susceptibility to powdery mildew, etc. Many of the goldlfames, and some of the mandarins at the nursery looked like they had a very minor case of PM. But I didn't know if one was more prone to PM than the other. My goldflame is facing east in a very sunny spot with decent air circulation. I'll see how mine fairs this coming spring. (fingers crossed) I would like to put more honeysuckle near my other fences, but there are fruit trees near these fences. How does honeysuckle vine climb?

Honeysuckles climb by wrapping their stems around supports. So the entire length of the vine has the ability to wrap and climb. A smaller support system - like wires or a trellis - may be helpful when the vine is a baby. OTOH, it also not absolutely necessary....you can just gently train the vines around a support and let it go from there. Vines or lianas want to grow upward and will do so naturally. Clematis need smaller supports as they vine or climb by winding leaf petioles. And leaf petioles are not very long, so a skinnier support is necessary

I did a quick search and found the ingredient in Ambush is permethrin. I already have a product with that in it that I bought by accident last year when I really wanted pyrethrin. Senior moment, I guess. Anyway there's some scary warnings on the permethrin, but I might give it a try if my recent insecticidal soap treatment fails. This type of aphid seems much more difficult to control and really makes of mess of the vine.
