Whats everyone growing?

Hi, I was just walking in the garden .I was wondering what everyone else was growing. What seeds are you starting. Any tips I would really appreate . I need a garden buddy to help me get throu my first garden. We finally have the garden fenced. My husband made me some Tp's as my grandchildren call them .For the beans and what ever needs to be strung. Iam still trying to get raised beds made and filled with the right soil.I would love to have tomatoes, beans ,cabbage,carrots,strawberries,cucumbers,onions,

raddishes.squash,beets,peas. Maybe Iam over loading myself. I have the land.So why not. I know Its a learning process for now. I dream of the day I know what to plant and when and identify the bugs, LOL, Ive read books about Florida gardening . Very confusing . They are all so different. So I think the best is to get my infomation from someone who has been where I am. Thank you. jamie

I have started all most of the things that I want to set out in February. About 25 different veggies in all. The only things I don't really start early are the beans. With the seeds that I have already planted I am just keeping them inside till they sprout and then setting them out during the day. I bring them in at night if below fifty.
I tend to go by the uf planting guide and I look at what they reccomend and plant the seeds between four and six weeks early.

I transplanted some Swiss Chard and Spinach. I just made a ghetto-like trellis fence with some garden string and a trellis and tomato cage and planted Alaska peas. I've also transplanted some Black seeded lettuce and some cabbage red/green that I got from UNF. All of that is pretty scattered but I am hoping it will be fine.

I've started brandy wine and these cherry tomato seeds, as well as a few types of lettuce and some more lavender. I've also had to transplant a bunch of Asters as they've started flowering. Waiting until next week to get some other stuff to start.

Brussel Sprouts and Broccoli are all setting fruit which I am very excited about!

I'm just a beginner, but here's the rundown: -1 Chamaedorea Elegans, doing REALLY well although I bought it from IKEA and it didnt look the best, but now its all happy and perky. It's on top of my radiator in the bathroom and I water it every other day, it pops out fronds like its nobody's business, it also doesn't mind the dry air when I'm not showering, what a plus! it gets whatever extra fert i have left over from doing my other plants. This houseplant deserves more recognition because I give it a 5 star rating. -1 Musa Basjoo banana.its in pretty good shape, its down to 1 LEAF now because one of them burnt for a reason i still don't know why?,its putting out another one with more on the way. It puts out 1 leaf per week. I fert it once a month. This one is another great plant of mine. -1 Aechmea Fasciata. This one has had a love-hate relationship with me, but now its produced 2 pups and is powering along nicely. The pink bloom is gone, but the fountain-look and whiteness of the foliage always mesmerizes me. It takes dry air now, didnt use to. Likes tons of sun also. This one goes to the garden with the banana in the summer, because I've tipped it over as far back as I can fathom, its very top heavy so beware! But anyways now here's the list of what I've killed: -2 Sabal Palmetto seedlings. These were never ment for my house, but unknowingly I got them in November and babied them for 5 months before they bid farewell. After that I stuck em outside and let Mother Nature take over. -1 WodXVeitchia seedling. I bought this for $20 on ebay in september and It only survived until December. I think it died due to pink rot on the crownshaft. -1 Guzmania Bromeliad. I bought this at Home Depot in a 16in pot for $15 in October and it died in March. The unusual thing is that one of the old stems where the old plants were(they produced pups before this) had fell off and was missing. The plant also stopped growing and died, so again I let Mother Nature take care of it, well I can always go back to Home Depot and buy another! Thanks Home Depot!

I read this thread with interest, as fall/winter gardening is one of the great joys of my life, and it is about that time of the year when we get started on the winter garden. I live on the South Texas coast, and we garden year round. I noticed that there was a discussion of growing from seed vs. transplanting plants. Many people shy away from growing from seeds because the outcome is less certain than plopping in a transplant. However, I have found that the greatest satisfaction FOR ME, comes from plants that I have grown from seeds. More seeds die from being planted too deeply than from any other cause. A seed is an encapsulated embryo, with everything it needs to survive stored in the covering of that seed. When you plant a seed, and it germinates, it has X amount of food to live on until it breaks ground and opens the first little leaves, and is able to manufacture food for itself. If you plant it too deep, it will use all it's food supply before it can make more on it's own, and it will die. As a rule, plant seeds 2 to 2 1/2 times the thinnest dimension of the seed. So, if your seed is 1/4" thick, plant it about 1/2" deep. If your seeds are fine little seeds, sprinkle them on the ground and just press them into the soil. I usually will cover my seeds with vermiculite, as it offers many advantages. One is that I know where I have already planted seeds. It will protect little seeds from our hot sun, and preserve precious moisture. And if your seeds need light to germinate, it will allow light to get to your seed, as well as allowing air and water to percolate through easily. I am lucky to have a source for vermiculite in great big bags for not much money. I use a 1"x 4" board to cover my seed rows sometimes, as it will keep the soil moist, and prevent a crust from forming. This is particularly good when growing crops like carrots, which has a hard time breaking through the crust on the ground. Just check every day or so to be sure you know to take the board away! Spacing can be conquered by using a piece of peg board. Just determine the spacing you need, and count out the holes on the pegboard laid out on the ground. This is great for blocks of corn! Tiny little seeds, like onions, can be sprinkled from a salt shaker, with a bit of sand mixed with the seeds. This way, you won't get your seeds all clumped together, rather, they should be better spaced apart. Press them onto the soil with a piece of plywood, covered with waxed paper or freezer paper, waxed side out. The wet paper towel method of germinating seeds is wonderful, especially if your seeds are older, and you are not sure of their viability. When they germinate, you can just plop them into the ground or in 6-packs, and you know every seed you planted is good. You can still grow from seed and have the dependability of transplants. Just start your seeds in 6-packs, to insure you get the varieties you want and the numbers of plants you need when it comes time to plant in the garden. I love to try varieties that are new to me, so this is a real GOOD THING for me. Also, by doing this, you will have plants to trade with friends, plants to sell (maybe?). And you won't have to thin and throw away good little seedlings just because you don't need that many plants. Also, I never met the person who needed 6 eggplant plants for a family of 4! My Dad planted a pack of seeds once, and I think every seed grew and excelled in producing! He was just covered up in eggplants! And you KNOW you can't just throw them away! So, starting from seeds, plant 3 or 4 seeds, give 2 away, or trade for 2 nice pepper or tomato plants, or 6 cabbages, and everyone will be happy. And start the seeds in the 6-packs the same way.....Not too deep, cover with vermiculite, water with a soft spray. I use a turkey baster, or a dish detergent bottle to water seedlings in 6-packs or pots. Fertilize with half strength water soluable fertilizer when they have true leaves. Mostly, HAVE FUN! Janie

ok, here's my palm list...it won't take up much space, but I'm trying! haha! trying very hard to germinate: Butia Capitata Trachycarpus Fortunei Sabal Minor seedlings: Washingtonia Robusta x11 Sabal Minor x2 plants in pots Phoenix Canariensis x1, from seed I found Phoenix Dactylifera x1, bought from store There, told you it wouldn't take me long didn't I? Although we do have a lovely g/h built to replace our previous one that was blown away that's stuffed full of other goodies, not palms and cycads however, so perhaps not the place to list them here on the p&c forum. BTW we were rocked last night by a 5.2 earthquake here in the UK at 12.58am, ok, minute by world seismic records but a weird/scary feeling nonetheless,....'the earth moved'.... for us all!! Gill.

UF's guide is really good. The thing that you'll eventually get the hang of is timing, this year we've had a warm winter. I started my toms two weeks ago, they're heirlooms so starting them early is a good idea (there not as fast as hybrids). Last year was fairly cold so I stared them around this time. In Orlando we don't get much frost so its ok to do it early as long as its not too cold.
Luckily in Florida we have a long growing season so if you start late its fine, you'll just get less overall yield. It's not like Michigan where if you miss your timing, you might not get a crop.

May I suggest that you contact your Extension Office about the Master Gardener program. It is a wealth of info about gardening in your area. You will learn more than you ever dreamed of knowing about gardening.

I don't grow veggies because we aren't the biggest veggie eaters. With only 2 people, it's just easier to buy them. I always buy my flowers already started, but this year I wanted to do a trellis around a St. Francis statue and I want to use morning glories, which I never find for sale. I saw the seeds at HD and bought them and they are sprouting! This is the first time in 25 yrs of gardening that I have started something from seed and it's fun to watch.
I even found the trellises I wanted in HD, very cheap small wooden ones, but they will serve the purpose. I want to put them on either side of the statue, on an angle, and let the vines grow around it in the middle of my old rose bed (took the roses out last year). I have a plumbago on one side and a YTT on the other. Will put some other butterfly plants in the front to go with the butterfly garden across the yard from it.

I admire you people that grow veggies. It seems like it takes a lot of work, but I bet the tomatoes are a lot better than what you get in the store.

Right now I am growing (and harvesting) english peas, snap peas, snow peas, strawberries, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, carrots, cabbage, onions, tatsoi(asian greens) globe and daikon radish, citrus, herbs and pomegranate.

In my flats I have just started cucumbers and tomatoes. In the next few weeks I'll be starting even more.

Keep asking questions. I saw you were looking for blogs, too. (Was that you? I'll have to go back and check, hope so!) I did a garden update a few posts back and try to do one every 6 weeks or so. Here's my link....

ibarbidahl - how do you grow the strawberries, containers? ground? what type of growing medium. would love to grow them. Went to a u-pick place and they were growing in the absolute worst looking sandy concrete-looking/feeling stuff. Must be lots of fertilizer...

I grow in both containers and raised beds.
No sand or concrete here! ;-)

The only thing to keep in mind for containers is that they spread fairly quickly so don't forget to space them out pretty well when you put them in! I like to mulch even my containers, too. (To keep the fruit cleaner)

In the containers I use 1/2 potting soil 1/4 compost and 1/4 pine fines.
In the raised bed I use 1/2 compost 1/2 pine fines - they are in the same beds as my blue berries they seem to like the slightly more acid soil and do well there.

I'm sure this isn't the best growing medium but it works well for me and as I stated they understry my blueberries so they are companion planted and it works well for me.

I love growing them. This time of year they are nearly effortless. Water, a little fertilizer and some sun - you get strawberries. :-D
