I have a small list, it was a lot longer until Mother Nature did enough "thinning" in the orchard. I am in USDA zone 9b, Sunset zone 15/16. I have a long growing season but not enough heat units due to the proximity to an ocean whose coastal waters remains stubbornly below 60F. The ocean moderates temps so that most of the time we are freeze free but we get the occasional freeze. We are mild yet chilly, with anywhere from 600 hours of chill on an unusually warm year to as much as 1200 hours on those unusually cold years. I push the hardiness envelope with cherimoya, ice cream bean, tree tomatoes, lucumas, passion fruit and mountain papayas. These are all so called "Lost Crops of the Incas", they do well here except when we get temperatures that dip below freezing. Most of these trees are growing next to the house under the eaves or under big evergreen coastal oaks that provide overhead protection. I push both the hardiness and the lack of heat envelope with bananas and tropical guavas. I've only managed to get bananas to fruit here once, but the tropical guavas produce every year, they seem a bit more reliable. Most things that require chill seem happy here, including pretty much all cherries. Out of the 450 or so varieties of apples I grow, I have three varieties that aren't happy due to lack of chiil, they are French cider apples: "Bedans des pars", "Noel des Champs" and "Reinette D'armorique". I'm pretty stubborn, so I will re-graft these onto trees that are fully shaded for the Winter months, which significantly increases the chill accumulation. The bottom line is that there are lots of things one can do to push the envelope. The right spot on the south side of the house can give a full zone addition. THe right spot on the north side of the house can do the opposite and simulate a colder zone. In our transition climate, such things make a really big difference. My southwest facing patio can often reach the 70's on a sunny Winter day when the rest of the garden is barely peaking above 55F. Areas in full sun might top around 600 hours of chill when the fully shaded areas get up to 1200 hours. Lack of Summer heat can be overcome with an inexpensive impermanent plastic tunnel. In Northern zones that could make the difference in ripening figs for example. Things that have failed here and that I won't be attempting anymore include a plethora of tropical fruits like mangos, starfruit, longans and lychees, all of which don't even put on growth in our cool Summers even though they don't freeze here in the Winter. (I have a jackfruit in the ground that has suived 10 years without ever freezing but it put on a total of three leaves in that time.) A number of table grapes don't get enough heat to ripen well here, such as "Muscat of Alexandria". The bottom line is that it's possible to push the envelope with the right location in the garden, but it's also helpful to know one's limitations, because some things aren't worth the frustration and trouble required to get fruit. Of course, one can always get a heated greenhouse.

According to Boughen website, ....Good heavy bearer of medium sized sweet red fruit. Well...still don't know what happened, these are the largest of all... after a couple of years of no fruits after freezing down I have some canes now with good size berries, 4 large berries can fill your hand and packed with awesome flavours ..kind of citrus. I've turned around from a miserable dude to a happy camper lol. Now I need to separate/isolate these from others growing between, want to establish away alone somewhere so no others will contaminate.

Here is a quick list of what I managed to grow in the thinner type mason blocks here in zone 7b (Albuquerque, NM). Some things did better than I expected, some things not so much, read the comments for some explanation. Keep in mind also that last year was my first try at most of those plants, and only my second year of real gardening. All the plants were purchased as small plants from the nursery (except the garlic chives which were started by seed some years before and transplanted). The blocks were filled with a mixture of composted manure and our local poor soil. Bay Laural :- way too small for permanent placement, now re-potted on windowsill Borage :- died shortly after first flowers opened Caraway Cat Mint Catnip :- 2 plants in large corner stone, did, and is still doing real well, reseeded itself all over the yard Chili Herb :- small capstasian type peppers Chives :- one did great, one not so much Chocolate Patty Mint Dill :- Eaten by caterpillars Fennel :- windstorm snapped the plant and killed it French tarragon German chamomile :- reseeded itself in near by voids Garlic Chives :- did well Horehound :- did OK, but likely would have done better in larger container Italian Oregano Lemon Balm Lemon Verbena Mother of Thyme Orange Mint Parsley Peppermint Pineapple Mint Pineapple Sage :- remained small, never did much, wonderful flowers Purple Ruffles Basil :- unimpressive performance Rosemary Officinals :- should have been planted in larger container Rue Salvia Siam Queen Basil :- not too impressive Sugar Herb (stevia) Sweet Basil :- grew massive, much larger than expected, did very will Sweet Marjoram Thymus Bulgaras Follow the link for a couple small out of focus pictures of the garden. Potato Planning - What are you growing in 2018?

I usually plant pretty early here. Last frost is kind of tricky here. According to Dave's Garden, it's about April 22nd, but quite a few years I've seen late frost into mid May, so certain things like potatoes are tricky. Of course, if I waited until mid May to plant to ensure no frost I wouldn't get much yield because they'd only have a month or two before the heat sets on. Anyways, I try to plan on late March, as we don't often get freezes below 28 by then, and if we do once in a blue moon they can be covered I imagine. This also gives them a chance to sprout before the April rains arrive possibly. Has anyone tried container potatoes? I watched a video where one guy buries the bottom of his pots where the drainage holes are in the ground so that the roots can grow out to get more nutrients and stay cool. Sounds like a great idea for earlies before the heat arrives. Potatoes keep so well undug in the ground for me unless cold out, so I'd imagine once they die I could place them in the cool shade under some straw and dump out the containers as I need potatoes. Maybe they could be moved into the garage in the winter even. If I mixed my own mix with some homemade compost and/or leaf mold , I'm sure it wouldn't be so pricy as if I bought potting soil. Might be something to try!

And then I'm at work, watering, grooming, repotting, taking cuttings, etc., for another 30 hours a week, give or take. I didn't actually mean for this to happen.

If I took the time to type a list, I doubt anyone would take the time to read it!
I have actually started trying to make a list for my own reference, but it's slow going ;) I have my Aloes all listed (I think)...a little over 250 of them. I also have close to a couple hundred Haworthias, maybe a hundred Euphorbs, a couple dozen Sans, loads of Mesembs (Lithops, Conophytum, and many many others), a number of Adromischus, many "typical" cacti, a bunch of epiphytic cacti (esp. Rhipsalis/Lepismium types), quite a few caudiciforms & myriad other succulents, quite a few orchids (from showy Catts to Paphs, to leafless Chiloschistas, to terrestrial Jewel Orchids, to succulent orchids like Dockrillia), some Gesneriads (Episcia, Av, Chirita, et al), a number of ferns, fewer Philos than I used to have, but still quite a few, some Anthuriums, a smattering of other Ariods, some Hoyas and Dischidias, just a couple Cycads, A bunch of Bromeliads (both vase types and Tillandsias), a few of the small South African winter-growing bulbs, a few CPs ....Lots of plants in a pretty wide variety. The bad part is that I still have several hundred to move back indoors before it gets too cold!
All those plants, and I don't think I spend as much time watering as Mr. S. does. If they were all water-hogs, I'd be in trouble!

Jen!!!! Where have you been? It's good to see you again.

I would be typing forever trying to list all of my plants. I grow just about everything- mostly aroids. I don't grow many succulents and VERY few desert cacti. I have several jungle cacti, though. Well, Sans are considered succulent, so I do have quite a few of those. One of my favorite groups of plants, by the way.

My latest love are gesneriads. Just love 'em. And now with space at a premium, they are just small enough to fit the bill!

I'm so curious where do you find the time to take of so many plants?Your houses have to be much bigger than mine.My plants came in very very handy on Sun.My dgt. got married on Sat.I spent Sun. watering and tending to chase away the blues and I thought weddings were happy events!I have 18 plants and stick the easy to grow ones.

My! Lots of plants! I have about 8 African Violets and only 2 of them are growing happily. I have a dying Elephant Bush in addition. now, my mom has some things growing in her bathroom. She has a very happy Christmas cactus and some other plants we don't know the name of. Oh and we have some palm-ish yucca plant in the living room.

Oh Mr. S, you have Homalomena x 'Emerald Gem'. If you click on my name you'll see that particular plant has a special place in my heart. I've since lost mine (they are quite prone to spider mites) but she is *fondly* remembered.

While I don't want to take the time to type up an exact list, I recently culled my collection down to about 100 plants. Last month I had well over 200, but every now and then I like to weed out poor performers, give away doubles, and keep only the best. Seeing deformed/struggling/ugly plants around my house only serves to depress me (I know in others it inspires them to do a "rescue").

My current fascination is with hoyas, but my other true loves are the aroids. Also calatheas, gesneriads, and palms make the list. While I'm not much of a succulant lover I do have a few that I wouldn't be without, mainly my pencil cactus ("Fire Sticks"), string of pearls, schlumbergeras and a few sansevierias.

hornetwife, I was just wondering if I should stake it, it has leaves touching the ground, makes it look kind of scraggly, I have never staked anything, I didn't even know what I could use, I was thinking along the lines of a regular garden trellis as it is so big. A moss stick might work for a while, but I want something where I won't have to mess with it too much once it starts growing on it, and how do you get it to grow up one anyway? I figure the new growth will climb it but what about the stems that are already pretty long?

I forgot 2 plants, one I got in a trade, It is a Homalomena and I believe it was called Emerald Gem, but I am not sure if that is correct, it doesn't look like what I have seen, guess that is another I need to get correct i.d on.
the next is my Philo Brazil, I love the sucker but it has been a battle to keep it looking nice. I have had 3 of them so far and I only have 1 left:(

Darkruler, you just wait, before too long you will have so many you will start forgetting some, I wasn't "into" houseplants until a year ago and I already have ran out of room in my house, I have had about 10 or so for 5 years, the rest are a year or younger. It is so easy to pick up small pots of what you don't have, then you start seeing 10 inch pots fairly cheap, and then before you know it you are spending 20 bucks on a plant (I couldn't help it, I had been eyeballing it for about a Month at HD, then I had a bad day at work, figured I needed a pick me up, so what if it was 20% off the very next week? *Grrrr*) then you see another of what you already have, but this one is different (longer, busher, etc.) I am trying very hard to stop buying duplicates, but it is a battle!

Wow, everyones list is great. I am new here, so here is a way to intro myself. I grow a ton of philo's, a ton of hoya's, a ton of AV's, a ton of gessie's, and then a few of everything else. Some of my favs from everything else would be my christmas cactus, my rubber trees, my pothos(four different kinds, I love these too). I too have close to 400 plants, most of which are in pretty small pots(less than 6 inch, so there are lots of shelves and artificial lighting as well.

see the funny thing is i just started about a year ago too.i also have run out of room.but if i see just the right plant i will buy it.right now im really looking to buy a miniature coconut palm they are very rare due to the forests and its natural habitats being taken by strip malls and housing.

I thought I was bad. Looking at everyone's list I feel better. My family thinks I need to seek professional help. LOL!!!

I have too many to list. I have never met a plant I did not like and want to own. I do have a big house and a garden window. Every window and in the winter is covered and I converted my Laundry room as a tropical plant paradise until summer. I do not have a favorite.

Lots of hoyas, cane begonias, syngonium, philos, sans, some succulents,pothos,violets,peperomia, and few other odds and ends thrown in for good measure.

In my office (in my cube) a large green rubber tree, 4 hoyas, syngonium, peperomia, cane begonia, pothos, violet, and a prince of orange philo. :) I like being surrounded by my loved ones;gives off great kharma. :)

I have about three hundred plants, so I won't attempt to list them individually. I'm going to try to write down what I can without leaving my desk, relying on memory and what I can see from here:

About 150 cactus and succulents. Mostly Aloes, Crassulas, Echeverias, Kalanchoes, and Sansevierias, but plenty of other stuff, too.

I'm just a beginner, but here's the rundown:
-1 Chamaedorea Elegans, doing REALLY well although I bought it from IKEA and it didnt look the best, but now its all happy and perky. It's on top of my radiator in the bathroom and I water it every other day, it pops out fronds like its nobody's business, it also doesn't mind the dry air when I'm not showering, what a plus! it gets whatever extra fert i have left over from doing my other plants. This houseplant deserves more recognition because I give it a 5 star rating.
-1 Musa Basjoo banana.its in pretty good shape, its down to 1 LEAF now because one of them burnt for a reason i still don't know why?,its putting out another one with more on the way. It puts out 1 leaf per week. I fert it once a month. This one is another great plant of mine.
-1 Aechmea Fasciata. This one has had a love-hate relationship with me, but now its produced 2 pups and is powering along nicely. The pink bloom is gone, but the fountain-look and whiteness of the foliage always mesmerizes me. It takes dry air now, didnt use to. Likes tons of sun also. This one goes to the garden with the banana in the summer, because I've tipped it over as far back as I can fathom, its very top heavy so beware! But anyways now here's the list of what I've killed:
-2 Sabal Palmetto seedlings. These were never ment for my house, but unknowingly I got them in November and babied them for 5 months before they bid farewell. After that I stuck em outside and let Mother Nature take over.
-1 WodXVeitchia seedling. I bought this for $20 on ebay in september and It only survived until December. I think it died due to pink rot on the crownshaft.
-1 Guzmania Bromeliad. I bought this at Home Depot in a 16in pot for $15 in October and it died in March. The unusual thing is that one of the old stems where the old plants were(they produced pups before this) had fell off and was missing. The plant also stopped growing and died, so again I let Mother Nature take care of it, well I can always go back to Home Depot and buy another! Thanks Home Depot!
