I cheat and have a greenhouse and sell plants, so this isn't a fair competition.

Hello neighbor :o) My but the list for edibles here in N.O. is nearly endless!!! Ha!! I see you are into fig and citris, both are great (I'm a fig fan too ;o). In truth you will be mostly limited by avaliable growing space. Most tropicals will do well here till we get that real cold snap which happens ever few years. There are low chill fruiting varieties of the more temperate plants like apples and peaches. One of the negatives about New Orleans is the alkaline soil so no blueberries (I love blueberries). Also some herbs won't work well for us mainly due to the high humidity creating mildew such as the monardas, bee balm. One other factor is the mild climate also grows bugs quite well ;o) Oh and forget the bunch grapes ... stick with muscadines. Hmmmm. Check out the LSU Ag site for all sorts of great ideas. If you have an particular questions feel free to write. I'm heavy into the permaculture ideal and frankly if its edible I want it ;o) HA!!! Of course I do love dem flowers too ;o) I do have a yard full of plants down here in N.O. (I've a house ... and small yard! .... in Arabi) but my focus has been on the place I'm building up in Ms. Oh and plug for Dan Gill's gardening show on WSMB 1350am. It was June last year that I commented on this thread. Some updates: Falstaff was removed. I had enough after some serious pampering this spring without a single flower. I did love those (rare) flowers though. Madame Isaac Pereire died. It was in too dry a spot after all. My tears dried after putting my nose into Alnwick Castle. Evelyn. Moved to a sunnier position and they have taken off. Keeping them. Alexandra Duchesse de Luxembourg. My opinion hasn't changed. Doesn't thrill me. I don't hate it. From a distance it does catch the eye since the flowers are so large. She's in a holding pattern for now. Claire Austin was removed. I just didn't like yellow color fading to dirty newspaper color. Blech. Old Blush. it's still there. I'm getting used to those flowers with poor form and strident color. Pure Perfume. I discovered that they need more sun and water, but I have no place to move them to. Keeping them for now. Radio Times, moved to a pampered pot, grew a little, but never seems happy. Will not stay in my garden. William Shakespeare 2000. I discovered that the problem really is that they need more water. I may put them in pots. Off the chopping block. So I was somewhat right: some of the "eh" factor was due to cultural factors. But not all. These are now in the "eh" column: Sonia Rykiel. Flowers don't take the heat. Not very fragrant in my yard (maybe next year). Doesn't produce those glorious flowers that Fragrancenutter shows. Doesn't really want to grow. My second plant died and I've already replaced it with another Alnwick Castle. Dee-lish. Happy to grow, happy to bloom, lovely fragrance, but to my eye, not very pretty. Winchester Cathedral. It's there, it blooms well in the spring, with very short-lived flowers, then a few flowers here and there the rest of the summer. Weird fragrance. Doesn't wow me. In my garden it's just a nondescript white rose without a lot of flowers. Iceberg. I really like the fragrance, but after the spring show, the flower form is lost, and the leaves always look sickly yellow. I may replace them with Desdemona, or Bolero, or ...

I usually plant pretty early here. Last frost is kind of tricky here. According to Dave's Garden, it's about April 22nd, but quite a few years I've seen late frost into mid May, so certain things like potatoes are tricky. Of course, if I waited until mid May to plant to ensure no frost I wouldn't get much yield because they'd only have a month or two before the heat sets on. Anyways, I try to plan on late March, as we don't often get freezes below 28 by then, and if we do once in a blue moon they can be covered I imagine. This also gives them a chance to sprout before the April rains arrive possibly. Has anyone tried container potatoes? I watched a video where one guy buries the bottom of his pots where the drainage holes are in the ground so that the roots can grow out to get more nutrients and stay cool. Sounds like a great idea for earlies before the heat arrives. Potatoes keep so well undug in the ground for me unless cold out, so I'd imagine once they die I could place them in the cool shade under some straw and dump out the containers as I need potatoes. Maybe they could be moved into the garage in the winter even. If I mixed my own mix with some homemade compost and/or leaf mold , I'm sure it wouldn't be so pricy as if I bought potting soil. Might be something to try!

Diane, Thank you for your reassurances and kind words about my Munstead Wood, even as the runt of the litter he’s one of my favs. Most of my Austin’s are taking some time to get going. I don’t have a hummingbird feeder. Would love to get one but am nervous about getting one because our area has a big ant population, we eco spray for them regularly… also, some of the hibiscus get white fly from time to time so I don’t want to attract any more unnecessary bugs. Regarding hibiscus, your blooms are flawless and the colors are so rich, just beautiful. Yes, my mother’s was a hardy as well. I also realize that I misspoke… I always forget to preface that I actually have all tropical hibiscus…10 in total. I find i gravitate to the tropicals too and coming from the winters of the east coast I just prefer plants that aren’t deciduous. I have 3 next to the house that get afternoon shade and they are absolutely lush and full of buds, some open some don’t. But the ones that are planted in full sun and don’t get shade are stunted, bloom little to none and have sparser misshapen leaves. I did use some tropical hibiscus specific fertilizer this year which helped them to leaf out a little more and boosted blooming but the ones always from the house still struggle and are not good to look at. I’m wondering if I need to amend the soil some to make it more acidic I think the 3 next to the house do so well because the lye is leaching into the soil and making it more acidic. Just my best guess. I don’t have any pics of the struggle one at the moment, I’ll take some tomorrow and post. Here’s a few of my good ones.

And before you ask -- watering takes 2 to 5 hours, every three or four days. Really. (The average is about 3.) Repotting, grooming, taking cuttings, etc. eats up another 3 or 4 hours per week. And then I'm at work, watering, grooming, repotting, taking cuttings, etc., for another 30 hours a week, give or take. I didn't actually mean for this to happen.

If I took the time to type a list, I doubt anyone would take the time to read it!
I have actually started trying to make a list for my own reference, but it's slow going ;) I have my Aloes all listed (I think)...a little over 250 of them. I also have close to a couple hundred Haworthias, maybe a hundred Euphorbs, a couple dozen Sans, loads of Mesembs (Lithops, Conophytum, and many many others), a number of Adromischus, many "typical" cacti, a bunch of epiphytic cacti (esp. Rhipsalis/Lepismium types), quite a few caudiciforms & myriad other succulents, quite a few orchids (from showy Catts to Paphs, to leafless Chiloschistas, to terrestrial Jewel Orchids, to succulent orchids like Dockrillia), some Gesneriads (Episcia, Av, Chirita, et al), a number of ferns, fewer Philos than I used to have, but still quite a few, some Anthuriums, a smattering of other Ariods, some Hoyas and Dischidias, just a couple Cycads, A bunch of Bromeliads (both vase types and Tillandsias), a few of the small South African winter-growing bulbs, a few CPs ....Lots of plants in a pretty wide variety. The bad part is that I still have several hundred to move back indoors before it gets too cold!
All those plants, and I don't think I spend as much time watering as Mr. S. does. If they were all water-hogs, I'd be in trouble!

Jen!!!! Where have you been? It's good to see you again.

I would be typing forever trying to list all of my plants. I grow just about everything- mostly aroids. I don't grow many succulents and VERY few desert cacti. I have several jungle cacti, though. Well, Sans are considered succulent, so I do have quite a few of those. One of my favorite groups of plants, by the way.

My latest love are gesneriads. Just love 'em. And now with space at a premium, they are just small enough to fit the bill!

I'm so curious where do you find the time to take of so many plants?Your houses have to be much bigger than mine.My plants came in very very handy on Sun.My dgt. got married on Sat.I spent Sun. watering and tending to chase away the blues and I thought weddings were happy events!I have 18 plants and stick the easy to grow ones.

My! Lots of plants! I have about 8 African Violets and only 2 of them are growing happily. I have a dying Elephant Bush in addition. now, my mom has some things growing in her bathroom. She has a very happy Christmas cactus and some other plants we don't know the name of. Oh and we have some palm-ish yucca plant in the living room.

Oh Mr. S, you have Homalomena x 'Emerald Gem'. If you click on my name you'll see that particular plant has a special place in my heart. I've since lost mine (they are quite prone to spider mites) but she is *fondly* remembered.

While I don't want to take the time to type up an exact list, I recently culled my collection down to about 100 plants. Last month I had well over 200, but every now and then I like to weed out poor performers, give away doubles, and keep only the best. Seeing deformed/struggling/ugly plants around my house only serves to depress me (I know in others it inspires them to do a "rescue").

My current fascination is with hoyas, but my other true loves are the aroids. Also calatheas, gesneriads, and palms make the list. While I'm not much of a succulant lover I do have a few that I wouldn't be without, mainly my pencil cactus ("Fire Sticks"), string of pearls, schlumbergeras and a few sansevierias.

hornetwife, I was just wondering if I should stake it, it has leaves touching the ground, makes it look kind of scraggly, I have never staked anything, I didn't even know what I could use, I was thinking along the lines of a regular garden trellis as it is so big. A moss stick might work for a while, but I want something where I won't have to mess with it too much once it starts growing on it, and how do you get it to grow up one anyway? I figure the new growth will climb it but what about the stems that are already pretty long?

I forgot 2 plants, one I got in a trade, It is a Homalomena and I believe it was called Emerald Gem, but I am not sure if that is correct, it doesn't look like what I have seen, guess that is another I need to get correct i.d on.
the next is my Philo Brazil, I love the sucker but it has been a battle to keep it looking nice. I have had 3 of them so far and I only have 1 left:(

Darkruler, you just wait, before too long you will have so many you will start forgetting some, I wasn't "into" houseplants until a year ago and I already have ran out of room in my house, I have had about 10 or so for 5 years, the rest are a year or younger. It is so easy to pick up small pots of what you don't have, then you start seeing 10 inch pots fairly cheap, and then before you know it you are spending 20 bucks on a plant (I couldn't help it, I had been eyeballing it for about a Month at HD, then I had a bad day at work, figured I needed a pick me up, so what if it was 20% off the very next week? *Grrrr*) then you see another of what you already have, but this one is different (longer, busher, etc.) I am trying very hard to stop buying duplicates, but it is a battle!

Wow, everyones list is great. I am new here, so here is a way to intro myself. I grow a ton of philo's, a ton of hoya's, a ton of AV's, a ton of gessie's, and then a few of everything else. Some of my favs from everything else would be my christmas cactus, my rubber trees, my pothos(four different kinds, I love these too). I too have close to 400 plants, most of which are in pretty small pots(less than 6 inch, so there are lots of shelves and artificial lighting as well.

see the funny thing is i just started about a year ago too.i also have run out of room.but if i see just the right plant i will buy it.right now im really looking to buy a miniature coconut palm they are very rare due to the forests and its natural habitats being taken by strip malls and housing.

I thought I was bad. Looking at everyone's list I feel better. My family thinks I need to seek professional help. LOL!!!

I have too many to list. I have never met a plant I did not like and want to own. I do have a big house and a garden window. Every window and in the winter is covered and I converted my Laundry room as a tropical plant paradise until summer. I do not have a favorite.

Lots of hoyas, cane begonias, syngonium, philos, sans, some succulents,pothos,violets,peperomia, and few other odds and ends thrown in for good measure.

In my office (in my cube) a large green rubber tree, 4 hoyas, syngonium, peperomia, cane begonia, pothos, violet, and a prince of orange philo. :) I like being surrounded by my loved ones;gives off great kharma. :)

I have about three hundred plants, so I won't attempt to list them individually. I'm going to try to write down what I can without leaving my desk, relying on memory and what I can see from here:

About 150 cactus and succulents. Mostly Aloes, Crassulas, Echeverias, Kalanchoes, and Sansevierias, but plenty of other stuff, too.

I'm just a beginner, but here's the rundown:
-1 Chamaedorea Elegans, doing REALLY well although I bought it from IKEA and it didnt look the best, but now its all happy and perky. It's on top of my radiator in the bathroom and I water it every other day, it pops out fronds like its nobody's business, it also doesn't mind the dry air when I'm not showering, what a plus! it gets whatever extra fert i have left over from doing my other plants. This houseplant deserves more recognition because I give it a 5 star rating.
-1 Musa Basjoo banana.its in pretty good shape, its down to 1 LEAF now because one of them burnt for a reason i still don't know why?,its putting out another one with more on the way. It puts out 1 leaf per week. I fert it once a month. This one is another great plant of mine.
-1 Aechmea Fasciata. This one has had a love-hate relationship with me, but now its produced 2 pups and is powering along nicely. The pink bloom is gone, but the fountain-look and whiteness of the foliage always mesmerizes me. It takes dry air now, didnt use to. Likes tons of sun also. This one goes to the garden with the banana in the summer, because I've tipped it over as far back as I can fathom, its very top heavy so beware! But anyways now here's the list of what I've killed:
-2 Sabal Palmetto seedlings. These were never ment for my house, but unknowingly I got them in November and babied them for 5 months before they bid farewell. After that I stuck em outside and let Mother Nature take over.
-1 WodXVeitchia seedling. I bought this for $20 on ebay in september and It only survived until December. I think it died due to pink rot on the crownshaft.
-1 Guzmania Bromeliad. I bought this at Home Depot in a 16in pot for $15 in October and it died in March. The unusual thing is that one of the old stems where the old plants were(they produced pups before this) had fell off and was missing. The plant also stopped growing and died, so again I let Mother Nature take care of it, well I can always go back to Home Depot and buy another! Thanks Home Depot!
