Cottage Gardens

Busy here, but felt like sharing a couple pics.

My cottage gardening is pretty much restricted to a smallish corner garden in the front of our house. I don't pay enough attention to it, but it tends to reward me anyway. The sun was hitting these Siberian Iris just right a couple of weeks ago so I ran for the camera.

What I spend a big chunk of my gardening time on is my cutting garden. I sell cut flowers in the summer, which is a lot of work and a lot of fun. Not all of it is work, and not all of it is fun, but the money, though paltry, helps to make it a winning proposition over all. It's also nice to be able to grab a bunch of flowers for the house whenever the spirit moves me, and DW appreciates them, though she does sometimes call herself a gardening widow. Here's a bunch of foxgloves I grabbed Monday.

wow!! You have enough foxgloves in your garden that you can cut some? I love them so much and have finally been able to get ONE plant (WS two years ago) to survive in my yard. I wouldn't dare cut it :) I desperately want it to give me seeds. It is light pink like the ones in your bouquet and is only about 2 feet tall, but it is flowering.
I love your bouquet of foxgloves and of course your very pretty purple siberian iris. (which I can get to grow :))

Hey there, mthorebgarden, you sound like me! I only had a few lilies for the summer last year, they all came from my mom's house and it wasn't until this late summer/fall when my interest in daylilies peaked. I've always liked them, but since my searches on the ol' world wide web, I've found way more that I like than my bank account can handle, though I do have the room for them, it's a matter if the dear boyfriend would be willing to let me dig up large gardens for them. I have a wish list that's about 200 and getting longer, and sitting inside all winter will more than likely contribute to that list getting longer. Also, I found out about the lily auction from this forum...lol...I have become addicted. I have about 50 lilies I have bought off of there thus far, and I keep telling myself to stop, but myself doesn't like to listen very well. I'm going to have a lot of work to do come spring! Karen

Straw: Thanks for the verses on giants. In various areas of Pakistan, people have strong believe that once upon a time, there used to be giants living around. However, many people do not include them amongst humans.... they think they were genes or some other creatures, not humans. These are the photos of Deosai Plains. Deo means a Giant (from genes, not humans) and sai means land. Deosai means Land of the Giants. Located at 14000 ft above sea level, it's a strip of 60km x 40km and one of the highest plateaus in the world. As per the local legend, once upon a time giants used to live here. Deosai plains remain under snow for around eight months and remain open only from June to September. During these 4 months, millions of wild bulbs and flowers grow here. Most of them are fragrant which leaves Deosai travellers with an intoxicating feels. One loses sense of time when your are sitting in a huge natural grassy lawn just next to a crystal clear stream amongst thousand of wild bubls with intoxicating fragrance. BTW, ancestors of many of the bulbs that we grow in our houses grow here. Deosai is a national park and therefore, no construction is allowed here. What you can see here is just a few kiosks that are established during tourist season. It is also home to the Himalayan Brown Bear.

Greylady, I cut a couple of hundred last year from this patch. I grow Camelots, which bloom the first year. This pic was taken in August. They bloomed again this spring, but not all the plants made it through the winter, and the ones that did were less impressive. Good luck with getting some seeds from yours this year.

TM, love the way the sun is playing with your iris, and your foxgloves are lovely, mine self seed all over the place coming up in the oddest places including my gravel paths.

Greylady, I have fairly tall deep pinks and one or two white ones, if you would like seed shoot me an email through my members page and I'll save some seed for you.

Annette, thanks. I liked the sunny irises against the shady background, though maybe it washed out the irises a little too much.

Whoa!! Now that is a cutting garden! I have a few rows in the veggie patch, but that is truly impressive. Gorgeous! Love the foxgloves.

Yippee-I just got some Siberian Irises and will plant them today or tomorrow. Hope they end up as pretty as yours, TM. I am another who has no luck with foxgloves. They are so lovely, so I keep trying.

Fabubous cutting garden. You obviously have the touch-those plants are huge. Flowers for your DW-love it! Know she does, too.
