A couple of pics to share

Last year at this time I had the average gardeners interest in Daylilies. I was quite obsessed with gardening in general, but not much Daylily interest. Early last summer I stumbled on this forum and all of your photos and discussion intrigued me. Then I started seeing the seedlings you all had and I was hooked. I truly am a newbie to daylilies, but I have been soaking up information like a sponge and my wishlist (like many others on this forum!) has become ridiculously large. My space is limited, as is my garden pocketbook, but I have found a way to squeeze a couple in here and there. I only had a couple of daylilies prior to "meeting" all of you, and therefore only a couple of blooms last year. Don't get me wrong, I aquired quite a few late in the summer, but I have yet to see them bloom.

Anyway, I thought on this dreary winter day I would share what few photos I have of my original daylilies.

You are off to a great start!Pretty pictures.Are the blooms on CP always in the foliage? I know that I had many short scapes this year due to the crazy weather.Thanks for the pics.

Hey there, mthorebgarden, you sound like me! I only had a few lilies for the summer last year, they all came from my mom's house and it wasn't until this late summer/fall when my interest in daylilies peaked. I've always liked them, but since my searches on the ol' world wide web, I've found way more that I like than my bank account can handle, though I do have the room for them, it's a matter if the dear boyfriend would be willing to let me dig up large gardens for them. I have a wish list that's about 200 and getting longer, and sitting inside all winter will more than likely contribute to that list getting longer. Also, I found out about the lily auction from this forum...lol...I have become addicted. I have about 50 lilies I have bought off of there thus far, and I keep telling myself to stop, but myself doesn't like to listen very well. I'm going to have a lot of work to do come spring!

wow!! You have enough foxgloves in your garden that you can cut some? I love them so much and have finally been able to get ONE plant (WS two years ago) to survive in my yard. I wouldn't dare cut it :) I desperately want it to give me seeds. It is light pink like the ones in your bouquet and is only about 2 feet tall, but it is flowering. I love your bouquet of foxgloves and of course your very pretty purple siberian iris. (which I can get to grow :))

Yea Chad-that WILL be an issue but thats why it is next to the porch,so I can add on and secure it to the house(-: The 2 varieties I like are the New Zealand purple and the Ricin "Zanzibar" -the latter is the big leaved one (-; Sometimes the leaves on the Purps do look like cooper but it is difficult to capture on "film" All the other Castors are normal sized,the 4 big boys jumped out quick and with the help of a week of 80s in March they broke out of the seedling stage fast-one of the nice things about having all the protection laying around from the palms is that I was able to use some of it on the Bananas and Castors. At one point my Abyssinian grew like 1' in a few days because it was hitting the 90s in the cover- Also-the 4 biggest Castors were planted (by at least)April 6 and I think that is a month earlier than "normal".

Congrats on your two new babies Ruthann. Here is some info that someone posted for me on what to do for my Desert Rose. What I have really noticed is that they really like the sun. I had this one for years never knowing what it was and just sort of moving it around. It never bloomed untill this year, when I happened to put it in good sunlight. I have it in a good well draining soil mixed with perlite and I have peat moss on top. I use superthrive on the occationally. Here is the info someone else posted for me: Next spring, when it comes out of dormancy, transplant it to a larger pot and plant it up higher. By this, I mean uncover part of the swollen base that is presently beneath the soil line. Add pumice or perlite to the soil to give it good drainage. Add Osmocote to the soil to fertilize it and the plant will reward you by growing a larger base, more shoots and more flowers. Plant them in a well draining mix, like cactus soil/perlite, water and fertilize during the growing season. Allow them to dry between waterings. Some will go dormant and drop their leaves over the winter. If they do don't water them until the spring, resume fertilizing then also. If they hold on to their leaves over the winter water them sparingly. They cannot withstand freezing temps. I think they like to be a little root bound (you always see pics of these plants with giant bases in tiny little decorative pots). I repot every couple years but I use very small pots. The best time for pruning and repotting is just before they come out of dormancy. Except for pot size their care is very similar to a plumeria. Keep us posted on how your new babies are doing. Lauri

Jodi, This story sounds so like mine. Tweetypie got me hooked when I met her at the Alabama spring swap and she gave me Miss Jessie, as the country saying around here is " It was on like a chicken bone" from then on out. lol I am so hooked now my husband doesnt even ask what I am doing on the computer now, he knows it is something to do with daylilies.

You have a very good start. I like your pictures. I notice you don't have a name on the last pic--is it Beautiful Edgings?

Keep at it, the flowers just look more beautiful.

Kay, unless I'm mistaken, that last photo is a closeup of Big Smile. That was the very first dl I won on the LA...and still one of my favorites.
The only other one I have of the ones you posted, is Little Rainbow, I just love Reckamp's polychromes. Thanks for the lovely photos, and yes, they are a perfect size.
Ya'll have fun on the LA this winter, ya hear? You too Jill!! LOL

Betsy, yes the flowers of Chicago Petticoats have always been in the foliage, this was my third full summer with it. We had a drought this year, a ton of rain last year and the year before that was 'just right!' I also lose at least 5 or 6 scapes a year that snap off at the ground, have never had that happen with the others.

Kay, the last flower is a close-up of Big Smile, I should have labeled it but forgot!

Jan, Jill, Karen (and the rest of you out there!) you have all been a bad influence. It is nice to see many of you have been where I am now. I have managed not to buy anything on the LA so far, but I am not sure how much longer that will last!

Jodi, I am thrilled for you. Dls aren't anymore expensive than any other hobby you might have and think of the pleasure you get from them. And not just you but all around you. Your pics are lovely and I really like BS. I do not have that one but may look for it. Also, I previously made a statement that I wasn't going to the LA again this fall. Since then, I have bid on 3 or 4 and won 2 of them... Special Candy and Funny Cide. I am going to post the pics on a new thread so be sure and look at them. Anyway, I enjoyed looking at your pics...Ellie

I have really enjoyed looking at all your photos these past few weeks! I agree with you that growing daylilies (and gardening in general) is a great hobby. It is great to be outside in the nice weather, and for us Northerners, it is great to have something to dream about in the winter.

Hello Jodi and welcome to the Daylily Forum.
You are off to a great start, and what fun is waiting for you. Your photos look just fine.

If you become addicted as most of us, my first piece of advice would be to keep an 'inventory' on your computer, and get those name tags made as you purchase more daylilies. I am still not caught up with the name tags I need and it has become somewhat of a chore. I have purchased many daylilies from the Lily Auction, and have probably been in a couple 'bidding wars', maybe with even some that visit this Daylily Forum, but all is fair in love, and buying daylilies. : ) We all are pretty resilient and know there will be another daylily waiting for us around the corner or next new offer.
