neat pine in Cassis, France

This pine grows in the harbour area of Cassis, a touristy town east of Marseille, on the coast of the Mediterranean....

If you happen to be in the area, check out also the brooms along the road to the top of Mont Ventoux, going east from the town of MalaucÃ¨ne (about 150km north from Cassis).

I spotted two from the road, as I rode my bike to the top a couple of days ago.

I agree, campanula. 15 years ago when we knew nothing, we just randomly ordered 5 bushes each of 5 different kids of roses that were being marketed as "ground covers" by a US West Coast nursery. We planted them in a 90 foot long (interrupted by a driveway and a cement path - so the plantable space is more like 72 feet) 6 foot wide bed between the sidewalk and the street in front of our house. They are all still there, and still blooming well. One was pink Flower Carpet, which turned out to be a short shrub, and I love it. A pair of real creeping short ones we put together were "Arctic Sunrise" (miniature climber, Barret, 1991) and what we were told was Nozomi. The first is white, and the latter is a dark raspberry, which makes me wonder, because all of the pictures on HMF of Nozomi are light pink. Anyway, these two have what look like identical leaves, flowers, & growth habit, and they bloom together and the combination looks fantastic. We also got Snow on the Heather, another short bush (Kordes 1995) which has single, floppy white flowers tinged with pink. My favorite of all of them is called "Snowbelt" called a polyantha, by Jerabek, 1997 (aka Cassie). It is also a short bush. It stays completely covered with healthy foliage for 12 months, and blooms prolifically. The reason I love it is the blooms - they are semi-double, smallish, white, but they have an amazing look - I call it "buttery" - they remind me a lot of the large flowers on the old rose "Pax". As I said, all of these roses are still growing and blooming happily. In the Winter their bed gets flooded frequently, with high speed rushing water overflowing from the street gutter, which is right next to them. Causes some erosion, which they laugh at. The only care they get is that once a year I prune them with an electric hedge clipper, & weed around them & throw on some osmocote & put some mulch. They even shrug off getting walked on/around by people getting out of their cars (when we planted them, my DH said that they might make parking in front of our house more difficult - "Good!" says I). Barb...both happy and sad....Happy he is moving forward with his life. Knowing he will go far as long as he stays focused on his studies, and learns to quit being so wasteful. Sad because he is moving on and we will be seeing very little of him in the next 4 years or so. We havent made any new life adventures yet. House needs some TLC. I suppose first we will get used to having a home with just us and the critters and go from there. Chell I used to be a dog and cat groomer. I loved it too. But my employer was a deedeedee. Never had the money to pay me each week and always "owed" me. And she never gave me my tips either.Then at the end of the year she reported more earnings for me than what I had really made.Fortunitly I kept records and proved my case and won, so make sure you don't let the same happen to you. I have kept my clippers, blades and accessories and still will do a neighbors dog or two once in awhile to keep my skills up.....but don't miss the hair stuck in places I did'nt know existed....lol. Picture Thread: Kitchens That Won't Look Silly In 20 Years

So, in these pictures I'm seeing three possible paths to KTWLS. First, kitchens that are explicitly and authentically ''period''. In 2010 and 2030 alike, a vintage 1920's period kitchen will look like a vintage 1920's period kitchen. It hasn't been ''in style'' for 90 years, it isn't pretending to be in style, and it can no more go out of style than the historical waxwork dioramas in the Museum of Natural History. Second, kitchens that are well-executed eclecticism. It isn't of a specific era, doesn't have a specific look, is a collection of disparate elements which are each appealing and go together harmoniously. Even as one of those elements becomes over-exposed and then shades into silly, it's just one risible piece in a still-graceful whole. Third, and I suspect this will be controversial, kitchens that are very, very avant-garde. Tastes change slowly. Furniture of the ''Le Courbusier'', Mies Van De Rohr, Marcel Breuer sort - ''modernist'' if you will - that was so stylish in the 1950s and 1960s, was actually created in the 1920s and 1930s. It took decades for the Wassily chair to go from ultra-modern to mainstream. A very perceptive student of cutting-edge modern design might be able to shoot ahead of the bird, as they say, and build a kitchen that might actually look less silly in 20 years than it does today. Maybe. I wouldn't be able to do it. Well, I can see a final approach, which I think would work in theory for a very few people. Simply transplant a commercial kitchen, or as close as you can, into the house. I think a restaurant kitchen in 2030 will look much like a restaurant kitchen today, save perhaps for more induction, because they are designed for function, not fashion. You'll have a kitchen that is equally institutional and graceless in 20 years as today. I really like seeing the pictures. I hope they keep coming. I'm getting some ideas.

Looks like a great vacation. I've heard or read that "Pines" dominate as conifers more parts of the world than any other conifer.

How Resin knows all this stuff just mindboggles me.

It was great.
Not sure I would call it a "vacation" though -- it was the toughest week-and-a-half of cycling I have ever done.
Its actually called a "raid of the cols" -- you climb as many of the biggest passes and mountains as you can (usually from two to four a day), staying in a different town and hotel each night.
We started from the town of Artemare, near Lyon, and biked south-east towards the Alps.
Of course the best known climbs in the world were on the program, including Alpe d'Huez and Mont Ventoux, made so famous by the Tour de France bike race.
These are the true Mecca's of road cycling. On Mont Ventoux in particular, we met hundreds of cyclists from various countries in Europe and elsewhere.
Also included was the highest paved road in Europe, the Cime de la Bonette, as well as the very tough Col du Grand Colombier, Croix-de-Fer, Izoard, Vars, and a buch of smaller 'cols' along the way.
A commercial photographer snapped a photo of me on Alpe d'Huez.
From a botanical perspective, its of course always interesting to watch how the flora changes as you climb each mountain, from deciduous to coniferous, and eventually to a barren moonscape near the top.
We were very lucky with the weather, as it is not uncommon for the highest col roads to be closed due to dangerously high winds or cold (ice, snow, etc.).
In addition, there is the change to warmer zone trees as you head south towards the Mediterranean sea -- while the "Pines" dominate as conifers in the wild, around the towns and villages you see a huge number of Junipers of all sorts of shapes and colors.

awesome specimen and thanks for sharing with us. Is there something special about this tree as it seems some special care was given to maintain some sort of rubble at the base.

I watch the Tour de France every year as much for watching the scenery as the race itself.

This looks like a very considerate pine tree; in the photo it appears to be leaning over especially to provide shade to the gentleman sitting there.

Hey Jaro, thanks for relating your cycling adventures, and congrats on conquering all those 'cols'. (At least I assume you weren't getting off and walking!) As a former bike racer I can imagine how hard that was, but must say I don't have the climber's physique with which you are obviously blessed. I have a little more baggage to haul up the hill, shall we say :-)
