Your fig will be Healthier,if it learns to avoid freeze.
It has enough time to grow and mature figs.
Depending on variety some leaf out very early and some very late.Here in the NE,Figs like yours resist better the weather Vagaries.Have fun,and figs!!!

Did it leaf out earlier in previous years?

My Hardy Chicago had a couple years when it didn't break dormancy until July or so. Not only did it not bear any figs, it was in serious decline. I basically gave up on it and, although I sprayed it with WiltPruf like usual after the second bad year, I didn't bother wrapping it in burlap before putting it in the garage for the winter. When I brought it out the following spring (2006), it took only a few weeks to break dormancy and I got some figs and the first significant growth in two years. I didn't wrap it for this winter either and it broke dormancy within days and is growing like mad and is carrying its first ever breba. Maybe the burlap wrapping prevented it from recognizing increasing daylength and screwed up its internal clock. I don't know.

Bruce, I don't "know" either, but I think you might be right about the internal clock being thrown off.
When you posted before, I didn't respond because you mentioned that your garage was drafty and that undermines the possibility that I was considering.
Plants are aware of their surroundings. And it isn't just day length. They react to to many stimuli, some of which probably haven't even been identified yet. Many are familiar (temperature, daylength, etc.) and some less so (movement, and day-night temperature differential for examples). These last two are used to keep plants compact. Commercial growers can use vibrating benches instead of growth regulators to keep plants from stretching. Think of a plant outside; it is constantly moved by the wind. Picture trees on the top of a high mountain - bent and dwarfed by constant wind. It makes sense, but not many people think about movement affecting plants.
But it is the other example that I think might be the problem with heavily wrapped plants inside - the day-night temperature differential (DIF). In nature the sun goes down and the temperature drops. Plants expect it. If a plant is deprived of the usual temperature difference it can cause dwarfing. It's a powerful technique to keep a plant small, but must be used carefully. If the differential is too small for the particular plant or if it becomes negative (warmer at night) you can get all kinds of problems. If humans are deprived of sleep, they'll die. The same type of thing can happen with a plant.
Your heavily wrapped figs were declining and dying. But you said the garage was drafty and I thought that the temperature inside was probably fluctuating enough to rule out this explanation.
I don't know. Does this make any sense in your case?

Even though the garage is pretty drafty, the temperature seems to remain fairly stable through the day & night in midwinter. I say "seems to" because I've never measured it. The concrete floor probably provides enough thermal inertia to moderate the daily fluctuation. But the temperature rises noticeably during the day in summer, because of the higher sun angle.

A lot of the old Italians around here bury their fig trees for the winter. And not just with dirt and leaves, but also with various tarps or tarpaper etc. That should more or less eliminate the day-night differential and also eliminate the daylight factor too. Yet they get great crops. I think you're right when you said there are a lot of potential factors, so I shouldn't look for any single one of them to be the answer.
