what's still green in my yard post freeze

Front yard looks good, nothing covered during the freeze and nothings brown. It's filled with coontie, cardboard seedlings, Fl. anise, sweetbox/sarcocco, broms, rodhea joponica, liriope, oak and pines, leatherleaf fern, korean rock, wart, rabbits foots, silver and ghost. I had an alligator fern and it's the only thing out there that browned a bit.

Backyard a disaster, only thing not covered and not hurting were the azaleas, broms, bamboo, honeysuckle and nandina. And some pots of catnip. Even things covered are burnt or dead.

But get this, my tropical area, which is a small strip between house and fence, is basically ok. Still green canna's and aroids and such. But that's a fluke, has to be that it was very protected.

I'm glad to hear your front yard is in good shape. You had it looking really nice and evidently you used all the right plants for the right place! You are lucky your tropicals came through. The painted fingernail broms I got from you came through the freeze with flying colors for me. My bamboo did well also. I have Multiplex "fernleaf", yours were "Alphonse Karr"?? Sounds like those are plants to use more. Kay

Flowers: Black-eyed susan, dianthus, pansies and luckily blue salvia, shastas-- all uncovered. All these should take cold except maybe the blue salvia.
Some things that were heavily covered still did not do well -- some penta, blue daze, vinca. One might think that these should freeze, but the surprise was that they were so well covered and still got hit.

I grew mine from mixed seeds I got in trade so I can't vouch for the varieties on most of the ones I have growing but they all kept their leaves right through this strange winter. The leaves on a couple of them also look fresh and green. I normally cut them all back to about 10 inches sometime in March because they bloom on new wood. I may not wait that long depending on what the weather does the next few weeks. Christie - if your smaller plant is a typical buddleia, it may not bloom if there's no new wood based on what I've read about them.

A few from my gardens - many annuals, and a lot of things on their last legs. Aster 'Starlight' - I think the seeds were from Gil. "Black" hollyhocks: Calendula: Gaillardia: Gazania: Heliopsis: This is a really pretty hardy oxalis that I bring in over the winter. annuals: zinnia california poppy nasturtium cosmos cleome lobelia blue salvia coleus (but this is the only time I allow them to do so) perennials: asters (and more asters) salvia monkshood mums salvia (cant remember its name but it is still blooming) japanese anenome "Bells of Scotland" campanula...and I just found a volunteer Phlox David....I dead headed in August and got some lateral blooms roses: a final Mr Lincoln Graham Thomas finished the other day :( Despite the sad emoticon it is really all bonus time now. They can flop, not bloom as well as capable of doing, and suffer from fungal disease but I love them all right now. Many of their neighbors are essentially in bed.

Like you, Lori, liriope, coontie, & broms are doing just fine, as are the roses, azaleas, and camelias. The shrimp plants did surprisingly well, as did some of the fern varieties, although about half of the traditional type ferns are brown and stick-like. (I haven't learned what varieties they all are yet). The only thing that I covered was my staghorn fern, and it is damaged, but I think it will be fine.
