I have larkspur seedlings!

Woot! I'd been concerned, since I hadn't seen anything, but I finally some some recognizable larkspur seedlings! And now that I have identified them, I'm seeing even more pop up over the course of the last few days! I'm hoping it's not too late in the season for them to actually flower for me - I have such variable luck with direct seeding!

I also have some direct-seeded cosmos that seems to be doing even better than the ones I started inside that got eaten by critters the day after planting. And I think I have a few morning glories getting going. Otoh, I have seen neither hide nor hair of my nicotiana or millet, tho that could be (and probably is) due to the kids tromping around in that general area.

Irene,congratulations! Aren't they pretty? I got some seeds in the exchange last fall and I planted a bunch and only got one. I just love the beautiful blue color this one has. I'm hoping to save the seeds from this one to grow more next year.

I understand your excitement when you see things blooming! It's so nice to be able to share that with other gardeners here.

They should bloom for you, I usually have a few in bloom all season long. I have a few of the regular delphiniums, but I love my larkspur. Once you have them, they will reseed & you will always have them. Direct seeding really works best for them, I think. The first ones I grew were wintersowed, they grew & bloomed, but rather puny compared to the ones that grow now.

Hello. I live in MD. I would love to trade for some larkspur seeds, and your feverfew. I am new to garden web but I do have some things to trade. I have been going around to everyones yards and asking if I can pick their seeds. lol I have fresh hollyhock seeds mostly shades of pink, purple and one peach one, but they did self pollinate so who knows what color they may be. They were 7 ft tall and stunning. I have a type of feverfew, I think it was virgo or alba it is all white, little button type. And also a strange looking one with a big yellow center and individual white leaves. My neighbor has some four oclocks growing and said that I could take as many seeds when they are ready as I would like. They are hot pink and yellow with a pink line. In the fall if you wanted I could give you some starts of forget me nots, I let mine go to seed and now I have tons of baby plants. They are very pretty in the spring. I have some foxglove seed that I am collecting from my few digitalis. This was the first year , some I planted from seed and a couple others I bought as plants. I also will have soon hyacinth beans. They are so beautiful and easy to grow. Seeds aren't ready yet. We live so close we should trade plants too. I live near Baltimore. Let me know. Happy gardening. Jenny.

Time to sow Larkspur seeds if you have them!

Great time to remind people to sow larkspur...it's a beautiful spring bloomer. I have direct sown (actually broadcast the seeds)larkspur, cornflowers, poppy, cilantro, dill,and blue flax seeds. I didn't harvest seeds from my bells of Ireland, unfortunately. I will sow my sweet peas this week where I am able to cover them during periods of hard frosts. Purchased plants for winter/spring bloom for me are: lobelia, johnny-jump-ups, alyssum, dianthus (tall varieties), petunias, snapdragons, stock and nemesia. My anemone and ranunculus bulbs should come in this week and I will plant them immediately. Molly

Estelle - None of them are blooming yet - I'm just excited to see actual seedlings! The cosmos will probably be the first to actually bloom, I think.

Well, a few of my new perennials are blooming, but just a little bit. My Nepeta and achillea have each had a few blooms so far. I do find it amusing that the flowers on my nepeta are rather similar to the creeping Charlie I've been trying to rip out!

Whoo Hoo, Irene! : ) Larkspur is so pretty and a definite cottage plant. If you keep it deadheaded, it should continue to bloom for you until frost. And don't be surprised if you find it popping up twenty feet away next season - those seeds tend to have a traveling gene. ; )

Larkspurs are tough. I still have blossoms on plants where the foliage is nearly toasted and seed pods are dry. If they can continue to bravely bloom here, they'll do great for you.
