Ornamental tree for yard

Hi all - recently purchased a new home and it's getting time for landscaping (as long as my final RG passes this time).

We have a pie lot that in the back we border FOUR houses on - so needless to say we'll be planting a few trees for privacy (and a better view).

We've decided on most of the tree's (there'll be six in all) - 3 Amur Maples and two Paper Birch. Need one more tree and we were looking for a more ornamental one.

We have a south facing back yard so it should get pleny of sun - and are located in Zone 3. I was thinking of some kind of Crab Apple tree - anyone know of a nice C.A. tree that will flower nice in spring and have fall colours to complement yellow (birch) and Red (Amur Maple)?

The jury is still out on mine due to its immaturity, but I have seen some really beautiful hawthorn trees in Edmonton. Mine is a 'Crimson Cloud' and it has red flowers with bright white centers. The flowers are really pretty. I also like the interesting leaf shape. It's borderline hardy for our zone , but so far, mine seems to be holding. I saw a hawthorn tree in a front yard in Edmonton the other day and it had to be 30 years old, at least. Absolutely beautiful.

The cons of this tree is that it is quite prone to fireblight (but so are crabapples) and several other diseases. It also seems to be loved by sawflies. But, I'm persevering with mine and each year, it seems to be coming back and growing, bit by bit. It's only entering it's 3rd summer now.

Worth exploring, anyway.

Malus x 'Thunderchild'
Thunderchild Flowering Crabapple, very resistant to fireblight.

Not a very good photo of TC at this site below, but it will give you idea.

Mine is just starting to bloom right now, it is so lovely.

Beng, in '85 TN experienced it's overall coldest temps since records started being kept. In mid-TN, Nashville fell to -17F, Cannon County where I live fell to -28F. That spring there were no blooms on the redbuds, dogwoods, or native deciduous azaleas. Mimosas, crape myrtles, photinias, boxwoods, Asian hollies, native blackberries, Japanese honeysuckle and kudzu were killed to the ground. Magnolia grandiflora were defoliated and some suffered wood loss and a very few were killed outright. In '89, temps again came close but did not equal '85, that was the year that pushed citrus in FL below Orlando. Interestingly, most native stuff, including stuff native to farther south of here (mags, loblollies, longleaf pine) suffered relatively little damage. I suspect the genes for cold hardiness are present in much of the native flora, indicating a possible much colder past. Over all, the out of season warm weather and then Jan-like temps of March-April of '07 did WAY more damage, some of which is still visible today.

cut it to 3 inches ... and see how it responds next spring ... what do you have to lose??? google tells me its a flowering plum ... i have had 3 or 4 over the years... 10 years was about the max i ever got them to live ... mine were in tree form.. and failed due to black knot and/or gummosis ...... which is probably just about what bboy said ... i would cut it to the ground to watch how it responds.. simply out of curiosity .. and experiment ... and if it failed.. i would dig it out next fall .. or late summer... whenever i crossed the line into pure hatred.. lol ... if you are NOT of that type.. just be done with it ... ken

'Black Tulip' is not a saucer magnolia. That's why it has a different habit. It won't be particularly drought tolerant, nor would a star magnolia. But how either would hold up through the summers would depend greatly on now retentive the soil was. I'd visit some local public collections for tree ideas. San Francisco Botanic Garden, University of California Botanical Garden, Berkeley, University of California Botanic Garden, Davis, and so on.

I have both Red Jade and Makamik Crabapples. Both are said to be spreading forms. I have only had them for 3 years and they aren't spreading yet. Red Jade is white and Makamik is pink and fragrant. Makamik is my favorite of the 2. Marg

I have one thing that I would absolutely not suggest: flowering plums! You will end up with many, many suckers all over your yard and they are a pain to deal with if you ever decide to have a flower bed under that tree. I would second the idea of a crab tree, or you may want to look at a pagoda dogwood or even a mountain ash. I have a very similar yard to yours although ours faces west and I am seriously thinking of ripping out the plum even though it is a nice looking tree.
