daylilies in the garden...

first pic is Gary Player, a new one to the yard this year, very nice light purple. I forget why I bought this, I think I saw it was the parent of something too expensive that I liked. but I can say it had lots of scapes and blooms for its first year. WHen I got it last summer I stuck it in a pot in the back yard and it kept healthy and came back strong this spring. yippee. the next two are Midnight SMoke RIngs which I love and have in 3 places this summer and then SIloam David Kirchoff. these two flowers share the effect of different shading at times in hot/cool weather when they open. but always pretty I think.

last one is my personal favorite daylily which grows all over the house but blooms sporadically sometimes gorgeous, but most of the times withering little brown buds. blah, this year being so hot I got more shriveled buds that usual. phooey. SIlaom Copper Kettle, when it does bloom it really shines. :) I love the way it looks next to the golden tansy and drumstick allium. If you're not already growing drumstick allium, it's cheap and easy enough you should for some bold purple in the garden.

last photo is a light grean coleus I've been really happy with between hosta 'Francis Williams' and my new fothergilla 'Blue Shadow' bush. Can't wait to see if it will have the fall color I'm hoping for. :)

My favorite is S. Copper Kettle, it is a real standout! I have S. David Kirchoff but it has never had a green throat, wonder why? I was going to get rid of it but maybe if I move it to where it will be with the other daylilies and it gets looked after better, it will do better. Right now it is on the other side of the garden and I don't always remember it. Marg

I've always liked S. David Kirchhoff, but have not bought it yet. Love the blue on Midnight Smoke Rings! That is my favorite of this bunch.

I've been adding a little allium to my garden the last couple of years. I love them!

The larkspur are beautiful! If I had paid attention to the foliage, I would have know those were larkspur. I will need to try those next year. I'm also loving the tiny white flowers (daisies?) growing next to the pathway. What are those and did you grow them by seed? I have so many places I would love to have them. Your garden photos are wonderful. Makes me want to see more. :) Michelle

FoxesEarth, I just love that daylily! (and combo). I've actually got the same 'white' daylily & lavender verbena combo, even with vinca! but I think its Joan Senior, along with another smaller pale yellow. This one is so much prettier and delicate, though. I, too, usually prefer the simpler forms, but this ruffle is just so delicate. We've got a double wild Tiger nearby and it is such a beauty. I've always loved just the simple, graceful daylily, since I was a young child ... and Lily of the Valley in Spring.

ngrahm, thanks and I hear ya about that lily, I have a few planted here and there and only a few have bloomed this summer, but worth the wait. ha I went out and took another photo of the pink one.about 8:15 here in okc... still looking great, now if only we could check bud count and branching of the list, alas.. hee hee. I have been trying to cross this with Siloam Goliath with some difficulty but thought that'd be a fun cross.

Dean, Great pics! I bought some drumstick allium and planted them this Spring, due to your pics last year. They bloomed nicely, but I think I spread them out a little thin. I am hoping they will multiply and give me a better showing next year.

I bought two of those Fothergilla 'Blue Shadow' shrubs this year too, but they're in pots until I decide where to put them, and I would rather wait and plant them in the fall. Another one of many impulse buys where I just wanted to have it but really don't know where to put it. I think my favorite daylily on this post is 'Midnight Smoke Rings', though they are all really nice. It's a shame about the bud drop on 'Siloam Copper Kettle'. I have daylilies that do the same thing (Royal Celebration), and they don't have that many buds to begin with. I think on those that do that I may give them another year or two, and if the bud drop continues, I'm getting rid of them. What's the point of having a flower you only get to see less than a half dozen blooms?

Love MIDNIGHT SMOKE RINGS. Thanks for the link to more pics. S. COPPER KETTLE looks really nice too, but if it was in my yard I don't think I could stand the frustration of so few good blooms. I was about to suggest maybe it just needs a different location in your yard, then I realized you said you have it several places. Too bad you can't get that beauty to perform better for you.

I don't know what a fothergilla is, but the little that shows in your pic looks interesting. I'll look it up. Thanks for sharing. I like when people share non-daylily pics cuz I learn about a lot of flowers I'd never see otherwise.

Midnight Smoke Rings has such wonderful blue tones. Is it a miniature? S. Copper Kettle does have wonderful glow, and it looks smashing with those companion plants.

Midnight Smoke RIngs is beautiful! I have Siloam David Kirchoff, it took a while to really take off, but last year it was just gorgeous. I decided to move it closer where I would enjoy it more-it was behind some taller daylilies. It is a bit peeved with me I think & not gonna do as well this year.
