One More Double Daylily and a garden View (2 Pics)

Pineapple Crush, bought at a Daylily Society show and sale:

These daylilies are planted with lantana montevidensis which attracts butterflies, crape myrtle, and salvia leucantha for fall bloom.

BTW, I've never seen a butterfly try to nectar from a double daylily, but they frequently 'dive' into single daylilies.

I usually don't like the frilly, double, fancy ones; but I had already seen this on your web album earlier and have been looking it up. I absolutely love it, both the type of bloom and the color.

I may have to break over and try one.

I saw a hummer at the glads the other day. That surprised me.

FoxesEarth, I just love that daylily! (and combo). I've actually got the same 'white' daylily & lavender verbena combo, even with vinca! but I think its Joan Senior, along with another smaller pale yellow. This one is so much prettier and delicate, though. I, too, usually prefer the simpler forms, but this ruffle is just so delicate. We've got a double wild Tiger nearby and it is such a beauty. I've always loved just the simple, graceful daylily, since I was a young child ... and Lily of the Valley in Spring.

Nancy- I didn't think about it until you pointed it out but the tulips really are just in time for easter. Not a big deal for me now but it brings back memories of when I was a child. My dad really loved tulips and always had some planted. My mom and I always had to stand in front of the tulip display for in our easter outfits for pictures on Easter Sunday. I have always loved tulips as long as I can remember and I am sure that it goes back to these childhood memories. Christine- The tulips are the Scheepers Early Tulip Mix. When they started blooming this spring with the purple tulips, I was surprised to see that color. I went back to their website and checked again and sure enough, it was supposed to be a mix of hot colors like red, yellow, orange and blends but no purple or pink. But I like the purple in there, I think it looks good so I don't mind. The terracing does make it easier to show off the plants plus I can squeeze lots more in than I ever could if I had a flat yard. I am really glad that front yard space is terraced as it shows off the bulb disply so well. I had to look up camassia as I have never heard of it. Thanks for the suggestion but it doesn't appeal to be at all.

Hi Julia, and welcome to the hosta forum. Sagae is a beauty, you will love it. As for mulch, the only readily available mulch in my area is shredded hardwood. I use this in shrubbery beds, but it's no good in places that you want to dig, and it doesn't enrich the soil, but as it decomposes actually depletes the soil of nutrients, is my understanding. In any event, in my shade garden, mulch is not needed for weed control. By May, there is so much foliage that the ground is in complete shade and nothing much will germinate. Hostas like moist, humusy soil, in my experience. If I had unlimited supply of compost, I would put down a layer of compost each early spring before anything began to emerge. In my photo, the bare dirt looks quite unloved, doesn't it? Any earthworm friendly mulch would be great for hostas. Since you are new to hostas, I will mention that each plant takes a few seasons to crank itself up to its full potential. Especially for the large and jumbo varieties, which seems to take 3 to 5 years to show that they really are jumbo. Oh goodness, how evident is it that I miss my gardening center job. WOW. DOUBLE WOW ...RITA:Your gardens are so beautiful.Them roses are beautiful.I didn't know you had some KNOCKOUT Roses.They are great roses.Looks like you have the "Doubles" too. I have one of each, a Double and a SINGLE. That SINGLE Knockout is the only rose the deer don't bother, other then my fairy Roses.Golly, your roses are just beautiful, and that Bright Gold daylily is mighty pretty, too,and them IRIS's are very pretty. I have one little small BLUEBERRY bush I got this spring.Its small, but it has a handful of Blueberries on it.I have it in a big pot I had some years ago that I had planted in huge wooden half barrels and they got real big and always had so many blueberries on them.I was always seeing a big BLUEJAY flying away with a Blueberry in its beak..I will be coming back to this post every day looking at all them gorgeous Roses. Memo...you go girl! You will not be sorry. DLs are such a pretty sight when blooming, and if you get early, mid and late ones you will have a long bloom time. When I got back from an out of town business trip tonight, the bed is just as full of blooms as the evening I took the pictures above. Have you checked out the DL forum? Lots of good info there too. Another great thing about DLs is that this horrible heat we have been having does not seem to faze them. Can't say the same for some of my other plants though. :-( The rain gauge did show almost a 1/2 inch of rain while I was gone, so could have been worse.

I don't have any double daylilies, but you are certainly tempting me! That's interesting about the butterflies. Why do you think they pass the doubles?

Oh, Foxes, that is a BEAUTY of a daylily. I don't normally go ga ga over the paler types (I do have a pale yellow/white. It's ok) THIS IS STUNNING!

Love the creamy yellow of your Pineapple Crush! I'm not familiar with double Daylilies, but I'm really impressed with what I'm seeing here.

The flower reminds me of a delicate orchid. Very nice, Nell!
