I grew them last year and had that "not enough wow" experience in the garden bed too. I thought that maybe they were not getting enough sun. This year I decided to plant them in a big barrel in full sun with some Yvones Salvia, purple verbena, a big dahlia (unknown color yet) and white petunias. It looks much, much better in the barrel, is kind of popping through the other flowers. I like it a lot better. So for those you you who will end up with it next year cause you can't stand the seed to go to waste (take one to know one!) try it in a big planter with other fuller plants.

Pokeweed is a bad weed. I had seeds come into my garden, and it took years to get rid of it. I still see one of them from time to time. The only way is to wait for germination of the seeds and hand remove them. The more you allow the pokeweed to do it's thing making seeds the greater the build up of seeds in you soil. The soil has layers. Each layer of soil being cleared away only exposes new layers of soil to the sunlight causing the seeds that are in that layer of soil to germinate. So, the more you dig up your soil the more new weeds you will get. Until you reach that lucky time in which there are no more weed seeds in your soil. However, this takes many years. I assume if you cut off all the berries you would be alright.

I'm sorry to hear the lizalily. Mine are just about ready but not in time for this 4th of July wedding. I will have to do daisies, white Campion and Callas. I had my husband build me row tunnels, otherwise I would not even try to grow zinnias on the coast.
