Stupid "I-don't-know-anything-about-hybridizing" question:

What's the difference between trying to create a green SELF, vs. bringing this green EYE out to the edge? Is it 'easier' to work on the self coloring? Or are all traits equally challenging to work on?

Not sure if this is Dip or Tet, but want to use it with some of my Spiders and Ufs. It has beautiful color and is diamond dusted.Parentage is unknown, as it is in my lost tag section, and was a gift from the bees.

Not a stupid question at all. More of an intense question. Both goals would simply take a lot of crossing and experimenting. To get the eye out all the way to my knowledge hasn't been done yet. My goal is to breed patterns that cover most of the flower. In the past (exception being some of Pat Stamiles')the patterns have been restricted to the eye, and most eyes didn't cover much of the flower. This flower should give me some patterns that go further out than any in the past. As far as green I believe it would be a matter of crossing the greenest you can get to the greenest you can get. Look at Jamie Gossards -- Heavenly Gardens web. He has a spidery flower thats' as green as any in the industry. Get that if you can...and go from there. But either goal is accomplished like any daylily goal: cross the parents, keep the kids that are closest to your goal and keep crossing. Let me know if that answers all your quesion. Bob

Have you seen emerald starburst? It sort of looks like your seedling, lots of green! Not like Gossards though. I just love his intro's with all the teeth. well this daylily may be more red than your seedling, but seeing your seedling reminded me of ES.

My own seedlings haven't bloomed yet, but I purchased this one last year. I like the green throat, its dark pink-rose color, and the SPUF form with the pale midribs on petals and sepals. I'll have to evaluate its branching/bloom time for myself, but so far it's a good increaser. This is the pic from the seller; I hope it really looks like this. It's something to play with, at least!

Lilypatch: very NICE selections. You should have fun in the next couple of years. I really like the ruffling on the first dark one. Jkunkel---yes I saw Emerald Starburst. It was hybridized by the same guy who did Adorable Tiger if I'm not mistaken, and has been awaited by buyers for a couple of years. The one I have pictured is first-year bloom on a very small plant. This year it has sent up 3 very large fans, so I'm hoping it will be even nicer. Bob

jkunkel, thanks - I've never registered anything, so I'll hold onto this one and see how it does. I'm terribly curious to see how it performs in my garden, and to see my own first seedlings bloom this year.

I finally found the pics I wanted in this stupid computer - I had never uploaded them to PT. All of four of these plus a fifth one I can't find will be bred to each other and also to themselves. The cross is ON TO SOMETHING x ALTER EGO - you can see the very slight bluish band on the appliqued throat and I am counting on the intensity increasing in the second year (she said with fingers crossed). {{gwi:745458}} {{gwi:745459}} {{gwi:745460}} {{gwi:745461}} I will also use them with these BALI WATERCOLORS x STRING BIKINI seedlings, in their 3rd year. {{gwi:745462}} {{gwi:745463}}

On the bagel side, this VICTORIAN LACE x ABSOLUTE TREASURE 4th year seedling will get lots of play. It is 8", tall scapes and great bud count. {{gwi:745464}} These two 3rd year seedlings will cozy up to the one above This is ED BROWN x RIBBONS AND THINGS {{gwi:745465}} and ED BROWN x VICTORIAN LACE {{gwi:745466}}

And about a bazillion other crosses with probably 90% of the crosses being within my current seedlings. It makes culling really easy when you use your own.

Just for you maximus - the BUENOS AIRES x VICTORIAN LACE seedling {{gwi:745467}} will be bred to these three LOVE IN VAIN x VICTORIAN LACE seedlings {{gwi:745468}} {{gwi:745469}} {{gwi:745470}} The LIV seedlings will also be bred to each other because all three showed their ability to polytepal about 50% of the time. Of course it could have been a fluck, but what the hey, I'll explore it.

The color on the first LIV seedling is incredible. But I have to ask -- HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE ON THE BAxVL SEEDLING? The color is perfect, the ruffling is perfect, and it looks like it has great substance. I would stand in a long line for that one.

Chris I keep thinking I will know an introduction when I see it or it screams at me. So far, my seedlings aren't even whispering to me.

If I ever give the red flag to the BAxVL seedling, it will be sent to MI for you to enjoy.

I think you should go ahead and register the BAxVL seedling. It is a beautiful bloom. I would buy it. And get the kids going too. I am sure there will be some fine young-uns!

Thanks for the compliments. I will have hubby get better pics this year. I can tell from the angle the picture was taken she bloomed in a very congested area and he couldn't get a full face shot. The area was probably thinned out at the end of the season and she will have more room around her.

Well, none of my seedlings have bloomed yet from last year, they aren't big enough yet. But one bloomed for me today that I bought last year from Tom Maddox. It now has pollen from Princess Diana on it. I hope it is fertile, cause I sure hate wasting my pollen on it if it isn't. ROFL It sure is purty and big too. It is from Green Mystique, they are both new to me this year but the seedling is prettier than G M for me so far.

wow these are all beautiful! I can't wait get enough dayliles to start crossing. I tried when I was a teenager, but evidently misunderstood how to collect the seeds. I picked the pods when they were still green lol!! They all just rotted! At least I know better now.

Dot, I have a couple of Tommy's seedlings as well and I plan on using Lori Goldston X Abilene Nan. My first seedlings will bloom this year. If you see a pretty face on a first bloom would you use the pollen or wait to see if the rest of the plant is worth a darn?

This is a purchased seedling, the plum edge goes all around the petals, I have not seen many dips with edges like this one.

This is the FFO and it was cold that morning. It would have opened if I would have let it, but I saw something I thought was nice and got excited. Later blooms were perfect.
