Mary Beth (wifey) has been busy making quilts and has just entered this quilt at an on-line quilting forum that is having a contest where both the quilter AND the voter can when a prize of some sort.

Tony, please tell MB that she's got my vote! It's spectacular! I've always admired people who quilt. I can make garments but quilting just baffles me.

Tony, that quilt is just awesome!! The colors and fabric print choices are wonderful, and the pattern is incredible! It's the perfect 'flower' for our group, isn't it?? (my first thought was flower and butterfly!) MaryBeth will have my vote, for sure, and I have lots of 'quilty' friends and family members to whom I'll share this website! They'll love it, for sure! Thanks for sharing 'wifey's' gift talent with us.

I'm sorry if I didn't explain well. I'm in an online contest to win $500 to buy EVEN MORE plants! Oh, the possibilities! So, if you already have a facebook account and don't mind voting for me to win, I would love the assistance. If not, no worries and enjoy the photos and daydreaming! (The contest ends December 22nd, and people can vote once a day until then at http://apps.facebook.com/contestshq/contests/176837/voteable_entries/39694244) As to your other question, I would add another plant stand outside, add another hanging basket on the other side of the patio ceiling, squeeze a few more inside, and then I'd spend the rest of the money on upgrading pots and soil. And thanks for thinking my collection is nice already! I don't have the time to have pets right now, so my plants fill that role :).

Mona, I think in Manitoba a Japanese maple (planted in the ground) will always remain a small shrub. I just don't see it getting that large to be able to provide shade. First, they are slow growing, second, any part of the plant not winter protected will die back. One hardier substitute might be the Korean Maple (acer pseudosieboldianum) but even then it's slow growing and multi-trunked, it could one day be similar in size to a large lilac than a tree. Back to the topic of winter protection, I revised my winter protection method this year. Previously I surrounded the small 2-foot high Japanese Maple with a cardboard box (flaps cut off) and filled in and around the plant with peat moss and leaves. This worked very well, but was time consuming. Plus, the novelty of winter protecting things wore off. This year I mulched the base of the tree with a few inches of peat moss. After it snowed I wrapped quilt batting around the plant (secured with twine) and shoveled snow around the base of the small tree, maybe a foot deep. I then placed a thick plastic garbage can over the plant sort of pushing it into the snow that surrounded the tree. Once we had more snow I piled mounds of it around the garbage can in a drift. The Japanese maple survived winter with some tip kill to the branches but otherwise fine. Another advantage may be that I have my maple on the north side of the house near the foundation, which might be a sheltered spot as well as getting no sun in winter (the sun might prematurely heat things up and make the tree break dormancy in spring). When we often grow out of zone plants we often think of situating them in the warmest micro-climate in the yard, but I think sometimes that's not a great idea. Just read this and ran out to get a picture while there was a little light. It's still a flash picture, but that shows up where I hacked back a few branches. Mine is "out back" (behind my yard) in what's technically a commons area. But the area isn't mowed, and would be all garlic mustard, Canada thistle and other invasives if left alone. So I try to pull weeds and plant when I can, but keep it looking very wild so I don't upset anyone. That's a massive boulder behind it The ESV is probably about 5' tall. I got it years ago (5? 8?) but have moved the poor thing quite a few times.

I'd be very reluctant to accept this as protocol for either situation if I wanted to put a piece of my work into competition. I can't think of a quicker way to have the participants cry 'unfair' and without participants there isn't going to be much interest in a show, is there? I would expect even more. I would expect the criteria not only to be available before I entered my quilt, I'd also want it available before I MADE my quilt. For instance, I saw mention that quilts without borders might be disqualified. I just birthed a quilt for the first time, and I did it specifically because I did not want binding on it, and there have been designs I have done where I also did not want borders because they would have interferred with the integrity of design. (Listen to me, rofl, I sound like some sort of master quilter, and that's really far from where I am at in quilting). However, I can play by any rules, but the only fair way to do any contest is that the rules are known well before the fact. That's one reason I haven't entered into the County Fair. The quilters who have done so, likely found out the criteria from experience and I can't find it and don't even know who judges it. I'm not guild related, or networked to any groups. This is what puts off novices and would-be participants and breeds ill feelings.

I have 2 that my Grandmother made and when my Mother died she had one started and I had my DSL finish it for me.
They are great herlooms for the family!

Thanks everyone for checking it out, there are soooo many great quilts posted on that site it will be interesting to see how it all goes. I kinda like the fact that there are prizes to be had by both the quilters and the voters. I have never seen it dont this way anywhere else, it makes good sense to me.

And Felix, you must have been serving some potent beverages to get those comments from your guests!

The picturs they posted of your place are great !

Tell her she has my vote too! What a "one of a kind". I checked out the site to look at the others. They all look liked they were trying to copy something. Your Wife's work looks so unique and artistic.

Nothing says comfort and security like a homemade quilt.

I have some unexplainable news here......

Evelyn, with her keen eyes noticed this in the voting section rules.

"This Voter Drawing is governed by U.S. law and is subject to all federal, state, and local laws. Void where prohibited, including Florida, New York, and Rhode Island"

I have NO IDEA what this truly means. If I find out I will post something on it.

Hi D'Ann........

It took me a while to figure it out too, BUT I got it now.

Take a look under the quilt itself and there should be an icon that says something like 'VOTE FOR THIS QUILT'. Select that and then fill out the info and you are complete.

I still dont know anything about the rules of winning in Florida. It bums me out to even think there would be a reason to not include Florida.
