Loving the shades of green in spring while waiting for daylilies

I love the different shades of green when we have a rainy spring. Hope you enjoy them too.

What is all that brown? Do you have a farm next door? You have a lovely and large backyard! Does your neighbor havce a chicken coop? I know, I am just full of questions LOL!

Those are the strangest mushrooms I have ever seen.

Look at all those morels! Tis the season for them. I love all of the fresh, spring greens, too. Everything looks much more lush this year with all of the rain, though it's making it impossible for me to get any gardening done, nor can I mow the back lawn when the ground is covered in water. Anyway, nice pics. I can almost smell your lilacs.

Hi Jan, Here's a pic of a native plant that grows in our yard...in a semi-natural area in the back. It is Wild Rosemary and never gets any water, fertilizer, or mulch, but it spreads a little each year. We have 2 large clumps of it now. It is about 2' tall. That is a palmetto bush behind it (the only native palm in our area of FL). The 2 small agave on the sides were stuck there because we didn't know what else to do with them (not native but surviving quite well). THANK YOU everyone for taking the time to look at my post and comment. My darling newest grandbaby finally arrived yesterday, May 17th!! It was a very long, difficult and dramatic delivery so I have been at the hospital since Monday morning and haven't even had time to shower let alone read any posts here. We came close to losing him but he is here, healthy and adorable! I am over the moon in love. My daughter was a trooper and so brave. I will post a picture of him soon! Celeste

Thanks Kay. I just recalled what it's name is.....but Huldine is a nice try, although smaller in bloom size. I went to the Garden Crossings website (which is where I purchased it years ago) and saw they still sell it. The name is 'Candida'. (Sometimes just seeing the name brings my memory back from the dead....lol). It and Huldine look similiar but Candida has much larger blooms at 9 inches across. I know it is hard to tell from my photo that they are that large. What I love about this one is that it blooms twice.....once in May into June and then again in late summer.

Yeah, Colorado isn't much for "spring" (or fall) weather. We go from winter to summer and back to winter as if someone was flipping a light switch. I always make sure I grow "heat tolerant" cool weather crops like broccoli because of that fact, but I have not found a good "heat tolerant" pea. Last year probably would have been a good year for them, with cool, wet weather right through June, but none of them survived germination. My son love to eat shelling peas so that is what I grow, so only getting a handful doesn't do much for us. I may give them another week to see what they do, but otherwise I will replace them with something else, maybe even just a cover crop to help build the soil a little more since this is a "new" garden. I am kicking myself for not planting peppers this year. This is shaping up to be a nice, hot summer for them. The tomatoes seem to have forgiven me for planting them (literally) two days too early and are now looking much happier than they did a week ago. The squash didn't get planted out until after the last cold snap and it's thriving. Oddly enough the eggplant which, like me, is supposed to be an unrepentant heat and sunshine enthusiast, is melting. The tomatillos look fabulous, but I don't think they honestly really care what temperature it is as long as it's above 32, they are basically a glorified weed. But while most of the warm-weather plants are thoroughly enjoying the mercury levels, they are not so excited about the wind. As is customary for summertime in Colorado, thunderstorms roll into the area like clockwork every afternoon. Unfortunately here at the house we don't get anything from them besides the clouds and gale-force gusts. I staked and caged everything, but I could still use the plants as a compass with them all pointing due-east when I come home from work.

Nancy: Nice photos. Looks like your getting your farm ready for the season. Our field grasses here are already so tall from all the rain.

How pretty! I love the lilac! You have a pile of Morels there. Do you freeze wgat you can't use fresh? I've never seen a live one, but have read that they are highly prized for flavor. Your place is really beautiful!

Thanks all.
The brown will soon be filled with corn stalks, they are just popping up. The neighbor across the road leases it from the church next door. The chicken coop is ours, we have a dozen hens, Barred Rocks, for eggs and they are pets. We live on 3 acres and beyond the trees in the back is the Grand River, which is spilling out of the banks at the moment! The mushrooms are Morels and my husband acts like he just struck gold when he finds them! LOL! They are tasty and we do freeze the extras. We grow our own veggies, for the most part and are able to hunt venison out back.

Hey, Nancy, thanks for answering my nosey questions. I couldn't figgure out what was going on with all the plowed up brown, didn't see anything growing. Your property looks like a little piece of heaven, really beautiful there. And I so wish I didn't live in an urban area that does not allow chickens as I would have those also. Hatched some chicks this winter but gave them all away.

I feel the same way looking at my newly unfurled maples and everything else while waiting for the parade of perennials to commence.
