While waiting for daylilies & grandbaby

All this rain lately is making everything so green and lush. The roses are starting, the early daylilies are pushing up scapes, and I'm on pins and needles waiting for my newest grandbaby who was due 5 days ago. His mom (my oldest daughter) moved back in with us and will be a single mom so I am going to be both daddy and gram. I've been trying to get all my gardening chores caught up but you all know how that is especially when it rains a lot. Weeds everywhere! Slugs and some kind of tiny caterpillar that eats everything....and pretty soon the japanese beetles will make their dreaded appearance and devour my roses. The rose borders by the road are just starting and aren't at their grandest just yet so I will wait and post their pictures later. Here's a few other things blooming and happening in my yard.

Every year my foxgloves re-seed themselves and always were pink or lavender. This year there was this pure white one.

All the scots roses have been blooming for awhile. This is Harison's Yellow.

I recently shared the ffo of 'Bonnie Holley' that came from Maryott's last fall. It opened more in the rain and this is one of them. It's weird to have one blooming this early....it thinks it's still in California...lol.

I would like to be able to grow mountain laurel, but it is difficult here. Your cultivar is exuberantly colored. A wonderful color combo with the swallowtail and allium. And the peony is?

The photos are beautiful, especially that white foxglove. They look like photos out of a gardening catalog. I'll take one of everything!

You really have your hands full taking care of your mother, your daughter, and soon-to-come new grandbaby. Don't forget to take care of yourself while you're taking care of everyone else.

Joy: The seller's name on the LA is Wormman20030, his actual name is Marvin Wilkins and he is from Falkner, Mississippi. I bought from two different vendors in February and March. Remember, I am in Texas and in February I am out in the garden while some of the rest of y'all are looking at snow. I knew they could not dig daylilies in snow and asked when they did ship, and they told me mid April which was fine with me. The other vendor send a beautiful shipment in April but I heard nothing from Marvin. I believe is was the beginning of May I sent him and email and he replied that he was a one man operation and would try to get to it the next week. Weeks went by, and nothing. I sent another email which was ignored. I finally got fed up, left negative feedback, and later took advantage of the mediating service at LA to request a refund. It is extremely hot here in Texas, too hot to plant. I continued to hear nothing from Marvin and wrote again to the LA. They said that Marvin had written them (but not me) and told them he was going to process a refund and all I had to do is provide a Paypal address. (Let me put in a plug for the LA mediating service here, I was upset, they were patient and understanding) I sent him my Paypal address and again, heard nothing. No emails, no explanation, no refund. I feel that from February to June is an unconscionable wait without explanation. If something was wrong, he could have emailed, he was well enough to email the LA, but has ignored me. The money is not a lot to some people, I understand that some people spend thousands on daylilies and I wish I could, but it is enough that I can't afford to buy more daylilies this year and of course even if I could, it is too hot to plant. I felt that since I have been talking about this incident it is only fair to mention the vendor's name. I would more than welcome him to come here and offer an explanation; as of now I have no explanation, no daylilies, and no refund. Some very nice people have taken their time to email me with the names of vendors who they feel have integrity; after getting over my initial hurt I think I will use the DA again but under the guidance of some of those more experienced. Some points were made that there are good, hardworking vendors that sell quality plants and I agree because the other vendor was like that, so my beef is not with the LA, it is with Marvin.

Thanks all. The brown will soon be filled with corn stalks, they are just popping up. The neighbor across the road leases it from the church next door. The chicken coop is ours, we have a dozen hens, Barred Rocks, for eggs and they are pets. We live on 3 acres and beyond the trees in the back is the Grand River, which is spilling out of the banks at the moment! The mushrooms are Morels and my husband acts like he just struck gold when he finds them! LOL! They are tasty and we do freeze the extras. We grow our own veggies, for the most part and are able to hunt venison out back. Nancy VB

Thank you! I am hoping the raised beds will keep grass from creeping in. And it also hides the hedge stumps! The iris are acually going-they have been running amok and needed thinned so I peeled some off the outside of the clump and potted them for now. And the plant in the middle of the bed is Solomon's Seal. It gets little bell-like flowers in the spring. I'd like to get ahold of some varigated Solomon Seal, but found this at a plant sale in May and was happy to get it.

Ingrid and Sheila, I’m just reveling in the beauty of your garden photos. Both of you have a knack for growing roses to compliment the glorious scenery around you, instead of trying to compete with it. You two grow your roses to look like part of the natural/native flora around you, not an easy task. Of course, you need the right property to begin to even try. Both of you have wonderful properties, and have managed to accomplish this look to perfection. Your roses and other plants look like they belong there, instead of looking like they were so carefully planned and placed in their spots (even though I know they must be). Or even worse, placed Willy-nilly wherever they can be squeezed in. I’m guilty of the latter, but space is at a premium here. Ingrid, I had forgotten about your ‘Sweet Frances”. What a darling rose it’s growing up to be! I now remember your purchasing it from ARE. I do indeed see the bunny, “mooning” us with his cotton ball tail. ‘Eyes For You’, I have zero recollection of you adding, although I’m sure you must have mentioned it. I saw one somewhere, and found it SO very striking. It’s one that really calls to me, even though it’s not the type of bloom that I’m typically attracted to. The blooms remind me of some tree peony blooms. My fingers itch to get my hands on a bundle of ‘Eyes For You’ blooms to combine with a dark purple flower in an arrangement. It’s a unique, and beautiful rose. Sheila, what a wonderful treat! You grow so many gorgeous roses. JH #3 looks quite happy. Do you think he's matured enough to be out of danger, barring some unexpected disaster? I hope so, as Jeri has shown that he's such spectacular rose. Your ‘La France’ has grown so much, gorgeous! I’m impressed with them all, but Mutabilis, Hermosa, and Glorie de Dijon are the “standouts” for me today. I’m delighted to see so many blooms on Glorie de Dijon! Your garden is beautiful--it takes me back to a garden tour a month ago in California's foothills--Mountain Laurel was new to me, and so intriguing. It's like nothing else in the garden. My large daylilies are just starting to bloom. Enjoy your grandbaby!

Oh Celeste, I don't know how you manage to keep up with all that you do. But it all looks so beautiful. I just love that Mountain Laurel that you have. And the roses and white peony are stunners.

WOW!!!!!!!! you may not have a bunch of daylilies blooming, but you have los of gorgeous blooms anyway.I havenever seen such beautiful Peopnies like that before. They don't grow like that around here.They grow, but they stay small. that mountain Laurel is gorgeous. first one I ever seen before and its gorgeous.That daylily is mighty pretty, and that yellow rose, too,The Clematis is beautiful,, too as well as that rose that's swolling up everything> is gorgeous. and I use to have piles of the johnny jump ups too,but over the years they have all disappeared. so I will just injoy yours. good luck with the grandbaby to add to your daily chores... I love your photos , celeste,and hope you will have time to take more photos when the roses and daylilies are blooming.

Celeste , everything looks grand. You have so much color
that you don't even need the daylily blooms to perk thing up. You, my dear have a rough row to hoe. As Debra said" take care of yourself " because if you get down, it really will be difficult. Weeds are everywhere here to so, I am not gonna worry... Ellie

You grow so many plants that we can't grow here in our climate. I love looking at them. The peony is spectacular. And even though it's an old fashioned flower, I still get a kick out of Johnny Jump Ups....Take care......Maryl

Celeste, the garden is truly awesome. I wish I lived close to you so I could see it in person. Your Bonnie Holley looks fabulous - mine has never put out a decent bloom.

The rose sand peonies are magnificent, and that Mountain laurel is to die for. Beautiful pics Celeste.

Wow, beautiful, every one of them.
It is indeed a sea of peonies! They look perfect.
I have very similar no name white one, with those red markings. It is not fragrant, and started couple days later than all my other peonies, and only has 4-5 flowers :)

THANK YOU everyone for taking the time to look at my post and comment.

My darling newest grandbaby finally arrived yesterday, May 17th!! It was a very long, difficult and dramatic delivery so I have been at the hospital since Monday morning and haven't even had time to shower let alone
read any posts here. We came close to losing him but he is here, healthy and adorable! I am over the moon in love. My daughter was a trooper and so brave. I will post a picture of him soon!
