scape cuts

This looks like I took a knife or weedwacker to it but I did neither. Anyone know what could have caused these cuts?

Oh my gosh!! I don't know but the end where it's broken look to have teeth marks. I know you are upset about that as I would be!!...Ellie

It is called scape blast. I believe it is due to the weather going from extremely dry to extremely wet in a short period of time. I will wait to see if someone more knowledgeable replies.

As madroneb said, they were little bulbs not seed. The little bulbs are up and growing now! I tilled up a small spot, smoothed, and spread them over it. Then I covered them with some used potting soil so that it would be easy for them to break through. They are about 2" high now. I think they all came up! I thinned them Sunday and replanted the ones I pulled, They had good roots and they look like they are recovering nicely. I hope they make it through the winter! I think they will because we rarely have frozen ground here. I didn't count but I would say that I have about 50 or more.

Here are some of the runners up for the Top 10. LAVENDER REFLECTIONS - beautiful flowers and beautiful 4-way branching with 23 buds on the only scape I had. MAGNIFICENT DAD - This one took three years to bloom, but the flower was gorgeous. Bud count of 14. ICE CREAM EMPEROR - I got this Trimmer intro in spring a year ago, but the scapes had been cut off and it did not bloom then. I liked the looks of this near white. Bud count was low, but it's still in a pot. NO BOYS ALLOWED - Great color and form on this Davisson UF! WINTER TREASURE impressed me as being very white. It does have some pink blush in the sepals, but the petals are whiter than anything else I grow. Debra

Most of them I cut off, but I put lancifolia right next to my walkway so I could see the flower display up close and personal. It depends on if I like the flowers. I tend not to like very tall stalks with a few flowers at the top. Deanna

We got 1.87 inches of rain last night (thankfully not all within a very short amount of time), yay! With blooms being delayed, I am really glad that I did not take this whole week of work off like I normally would have. I took next week off though, so hopefully things start blooming around here! There were no FFOs today. I think another one of my new Emmerich ones will have an FFO tomorrow. I am not happy with my iphone pictures, they look accurate color wise on my phone, but not when I look at them on my pc or on this post. I thought I would try something different by using my phone, but I am going to go back to using my old camera. Here's another pic of Broken Chains that looks more true to color, this is a different bloom that was open today.

It could be scape blast. It happens when it's real dry and all of a sudden you get a lot of rain. Did you find it like that on the ground or did you break it off? what does the other end (not the one with the buds) look like? If it was not completely broken off I would have used electrical or duct tape to hold it together, go ahead and laugh, but it works. No kidding I would have taped up those cuts and let it bloom, and probably even set pods on it if I could.

Edward, I don't know that I'm more knowledgeable but that is definitely scape blast - more common on Tets,and as Edward said, more prone to happen after a lot of rain ( especially if it has been dry before. ) Either last year or the year before a scape of the then fairly new MICHAEL MILLER blasted right as it was ready to bloom, and I duct taped it together - it bloomed!

I agree with those who suggest scape blast. Sure looks like it to me.
LOL Floota...good old duct tape...you can fix just about anything with it, can't you? :)

I have one that did that, scape blast huh? We've had tons of rain, no time for it to get dry, but mine sure looks like that.

I learned something too. The duct tape idea is great. My first thought would have been that those darn rabbits were back. So far all they have bothered is the leaves, worked two plants over pretty good. Thanks for posting your picture. Judy

Looks like scape blast to me too. Duck tape does work, but on scapes with large (or important) flowers, stake them. Some rain in a big flower and it will break off the patched scape.

Actually I (accidently) BROKE that scape off by slightly bending it toward me to get a better look at the blooms. Didn't even notice those 'blasts' until afterwards. It had 2 nice blooms on it too that came inside and enjoyed the a/c....made the others jealous! And I am not above using good old duct tape...LOL will do anytime! It does work!
But we didn't get ALOT of rain recently....however it has been dry more than usual here. That particular plant is growing rather weird....it seems so 'bunched up'....
