Saturday's sizzlers for a hot, hot day

It's been really hot here for the past two days - in the mid 90s. I've got lots of blooms open now.

DUCK'S DARK SIDE is a new one I got last year that is blooming for the first time ever.

Your blooms are looking awesome! I love Ducks Dark Side, Wild Horses and WOIA!!! Gosh, I would want to be in the garden all day if I had blooms like that!

WOW!! DEBRA:What some beauties today. They are all just gorgeous.I especially like DUCK'S DARK SIDE, and HAPPY CHARMER and ROARING RAPIDS.they are excepionly beautiful, but my favorite one has got to be WONDER OF IT ALL.Glad to see you are geting perfect blooms, too.

beachlily, my stepdad had shingles and it was awful, there were days when even the collar on his shirt hurt him. I'm sorry that your hubs has this to deal with too. Hang in there, I'm sending prayers and hugs, as you know. Ruthanna, like you, I don't have air conditioning at all, and I cook outside on the deck sometimes. I should have an awning out there, but I don't. I do have an outside plug, so I put a crockpot out there, or my Nesco roaster or my small countertop "convection oven". I also have a camp stove, so I can make breakfast out there if it suits me and I have canned out there occasionally. I keep threatening to get one of those "screen houses" because the mosquitos here are awful, the people who keep track of such things say it's the worst year for mosquitos in a long time, that we're having the "perfect storm" of heat and wet for them. The bats and barn swallows are loving it, though. It got to be 92 here on Friday and 88 on Saturday, with humidity hovering in the high 80s. I decided to just ignore it and so on Saturday I mowed the lawn, finally cleaned and folded the pool cover, gave the outside trim on the house a coat of Kilz because we're painting the house, and then went inside and canned a batch of Habenero Gold. I figure if it's hot, it just is and a bit more doesn't make a difference. Yesterday I compensated by spending 7 hours in the garden, rototilling, raking and hoeing. There was a decent breeze and it only went up to 84F so it wasn't so bad, but it didn't cool down at night and Elery ended up sleeping on the couch in front of the open sliding door and with the fan blowing With both dogs. His house has air conditioning and so he's not used to it. Annie

I'm in Wisconsin and while it been soupy hot here, we've had lots of rain. We've had so much rain that I now have waterfront property, lol. Seriously though, there is nothing worse than a drought and hot, hot weather. I hope you get lots of moisture soon. Our lakes are finally back up to where they're supposed to be. We have had dryer than normal years lately and the lakes and rivers were down. While I'm a bit sick of all the rain we've had, I'm glad that we got it this year. BTW - the humidty has dropped and it's down to 67 while I type this. Very nice if I do say so myself.

Julia, It is registered as a reverse bitone with the petals being lighter than the sepals. It only looks like the picture on the AHS registry first thing in the morning. It does not hold that pattern throughout the day and it looks like the above picture. One has to look closely to see the reverse bitone, but it is generally imperceptible. I think that it has bought a ticket out of the garden, even though it's performance is better than registered.

Yes, the Prismatic clump steals the show. I really like the look of that one. Your Bali Watercolor is looking really nice and purple this year. I think that pine straw mulch is a good thing. My daylilies and roses are planted in soil that was once dense forest, heavy on the evergreens (hemlock, spruce, and white pine), as well as granite rock. My daylily beds are mulched with shredded leaves of maples, birch and oak with pine needles mingled in from all the white pine on my property. My soil leans towards acidic. And my purples are truly purple!

Exceptional, Debra, the heat doesn't seem to have affected this group. Duck's Dark Side immediately grabbed me--what a classy looking bloom. All of these have much to commend them, but I will just list a few--nope, can't do it, since they are so wonderful. I simply cannot pick one over another. Avedon

Gorgeous blooms Debra, not a one I wouldn't love to own. Duck's Dark Side & Happy Charmer are the ones that really stand out for me though!

They are really pretty blooms and your usual first rate photography. Ducks Dark Side is my favorite, although as usual, i really like wild Horses and Roaring Rapids is a beauty!

These are spectacular, but then you never disappoint...LOL.
My favorite is Duck's Dark Side. I have never seen that one before but what a beauty! The contrast between the dark, deep color and the yellow edge is breathtakingly gorgeous. I WANT that one and I don't know where to get it, but I am all done ordering for the year (maybe). Happy Charmer reminds me a little of Party Pinafore which I have and love. Your Wonder of it All is opening very well for you there. They all are scrumptious.

Sheila - Thanks for the comments. I'd love to be out in the garden all day, but it's just too hot. I think the daylilies would like to come inside on scorchers like this.

Avedon, Celeste and Kay - Duck's Dark Side does have a very commanding presence.

Jean and Rita - Although I had two good blooms on the WOIA clump today, three others never opened up. The ones that do open though are gorgeous.

Celeste - Happy Charmer and Party Pinafore are similar in their bicolor ways and short stature.

WOW on all of them, but I did jump up and down for joy when I saw Duck's Dark Side, I have had it for two summers now and it is putting up nice big scapes for the first time. Now I can't wait, yours is so super!

Duck's Dark Side is stunning. I can just see me taking 10,000 photos of it if it had opened here. Levi Davis never looked good here and I finally gave it away last year.

Duck's Dark Side is really striking. What a perfect looking bloom. Super Chief looks great too, but then they all do.

Duck's Dark Side is incredible what a bloom it is going on my list. I just ordered Colorado Moonfire and Super Chief so I was glad to see some garden shots of them both are stunning.

Linda - Superchief should do very well in your zone. It has never performed for me as well as the first year I got it from Phil Reilly. Colorado Moonfire does great everywhere. It's just a little trouper that always reblooms well.

To everyone who liked the photo of Duck's Dark Side: It held its color in full sun with temperatures in the mid 90s. I'm very impressed by that.
