Assignment #2 Fun from Ground Level

Get down to ground level or a low level and take pictures from there. Use your imagination and see the world from a totally different perspective. For example, take a picture looking up into a tree, under a peony bush or of the grass with your dog's feet in the picture. Can be indoors or out. Be creative and have fun.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's photos.

OK..you two must have a quirky sense of humour..lol..our snow has melted leaving a quaggy nasty sloppy mess behind.It will take a lot of coaxing for me to get down on the ground...hahaha..savona

Another emergency - heirloom pie/tart assignment

Without a recipe for the filling, I really couldn't say about that... But... thaw the pastry, and pat it into the tart tins...making sure to get it into all the fluted edges. Then place a piece of foil into the shell, fill it with "pie weights"..sort of metal beads...or use beans you save just for that use...and bake at 375 for about 12 minutes...remove the weights and the foil and bake another 3 or 4 minutes and cool. Now if you are useing a cooked filling put it into the cooled crust ( the filling should be cool too) then just before serving, top with the fruit....I suspect that's what the cherries were for? What a wonderful thing to do!....and now you can make tarts often ...in his memory. I am adding a copied recipe from a mag. of a lot of years ago...perhaps it will give you an idea of how he made the dough...and how you might make some when this is gone. Linda C This from Cook's magazine a lot of years ago......none better! Pastry: 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1/4 cup cake flour 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 pound chilled butter in cubes 2 egg yolks....and water if needed. Mix dry ingredients and cut in butter until mix resembles peas. Work in the egg yolks....and if necessare to make a smooth stiff dough, up to 3T of water. Form into ball, cover and chill 30 minutes. Roll dough slightly larger than tart pan.....fit into pan and roll the pin over the edges of the pan to cut off excess dough....Chill at least 5 minutes....or over night. Fill with buttered foil weight with pie weights or beans and bake 10 minutes at 375, remoive weights and foil and bake another 10 minutes at 350. Pastry cream 2 1/2 T. flour 1/4 cup sugar pinch of salt 3 egg yolks 1 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla 1 1/2 T eau d'vie...or liquor that blends well with the fruit youa re going to use. 2 tsp butter. Mix sugar and salt in a heavy pan,beat in egg yolks, gradually whisk in milk, cook and whisk over low heat until bubbles break surface.....boil 1 minute stirring constantly. Remove from heat ands tir in vanilla and liquor. lay plastic wrap on the surface of the cream and chill. Glaze 1 cup of apricot preservs or red currant jelly and 1 T water.... Heat until jelly is melted. Put pastry into shell, cut up fresh fruit of your choice ( strawberries, raspberries, peaches, apricots, kiwi....or a mixture.) Brush with glaze,chill and serve

Students should not be punished by being required to write. Perhaps that's one of many reasons that people tend not to like to write. Additionally, writing 500 sentences as a punishment for 2nd graders seems excessive. I would find out more about what is happening in the class. Does the teacher talk a lot with little opportunity for student interaction? Then she should consider providing opportunities for small group collaboration. Are the students talking because they're bored? Then she needs to experiment with different ways of apporaching instruction to find out what will engage her students. Student talking is the result of an underlying issue. Rather than trying to bully students into submission, she should try to discover and address the underlying issue. I'm not trying to sound judgmental. I am a former teacher who has sucessfully taught in innercity schools. [I am no longer in the classroom because I train teachers now.] When I first started teaching, I used to punish students for inappropriate behavior. I spent a lot of time putting out behavioral fires. Once I realized that student behaviors are the result of classroom, community, and/or home conditions, I focused on addressing the underlying issues. After that, I had few behavioral problems with my students and student achievement soared. I also agree with a previous poster that telling your son that he is an exception to what the teacher has said is counterproductive. He may come to believe that school rules only apply if his mother says that they do and it undermines the teacher's authority.

Oh wait......another idea. Could you sink 2 posts in concrete at entrance to this area then attach 1 or 2 lengths of chain to make a barrier? Then put pots of mandavilla or another type of climber under it and let them climb on the chains - mandavilla are beautiful bloomers and this really couldn't be called a fence, could be considered a trellis. Would be easy to construct, 2 landscape timbers for posts, 2 bags concrete, 2 lengths of chain. Or.....if you know someone who has cut down a tree, get some of the larger logs, make a barrier and put pots in front or behind them. The idea is to make it more trouble than it is worth for them to park there. Or could cut landscape timbers and bury them 12" apart so that 2' or so stick out of the ground. If the fool runs over them, he will hurt his tires but you aren't setting a trap like nails would. This would be perfectly innocent and not considered a fence. This would not involve anything but a couple of landscape timbers, a saw and some muscle to dig and place them. I had neighbors that built a huge shop next to one of my horse pastures. Had lights on all the time, when we sat on our deck, that's all we could see plus they worked on their race cars. I finally just built an 8' fence, which survived 2 hurricanes and is still in place and did the trick! For a while, nearly drove me crazy, so I sure sympathize with you about no good neighbors!

Laurie, I like your trees...looking uuuppp!!

I didn't realize how the moisture from the stalks of the peonies drops to ground level and really expands the stalks, until the other day when I saw them when I was cutting down the peonies for winter. I thought that this would be an interesting picture...

Today as I went for a walk down the driveway I came across this little wildflower. Had to go back for my camera. Of course, then when I was on my stomach my border collie thought that this meant time to play and sat right in front of the camera, on the dandelion. It doesn't look too worse for wear.

I came back to the house and got onto my stomach on the cement walkway and took a picture of the veronica spicata still blooming. It is about 1/2" across in reality. Didn't realize how cold the walkway was until I was down on my tummy on it.

Lovely pics, both of you! Yes, Brenda, i can see where a cement sidewalk just might be a little cold this time of year! So it occurred to me that i could cheat a bit in this assignment. :) Can you guess how?

Marcia, your Sambucus branches look really neat highlighted against the dark.
