You got some good plants!The last order is still what I would call "Nearly Good". I'm sure we have all gotten a lot worse. I don't envy you having to plant this many at one time. You've got a good days work ahead of you.

I have all of my last fall orders(38 plants) in their pots and growing good except for one plant. My "Firewall" is puny. It only had 2 good roots on it and I paid $55 for this single fan. It is a medium size plant. The rest of my order is doing good from this grower. I'm really giving "Firewall" special attention and I hope I don't have to notify the grower.

Some of my "single" fans that I got in from a Florida grower have already divided into triple fans! I didn't get these plants until March 15 so I'm so happy with them. Now if I can just keep them from getting rust. So far, not a sign of it.

You did good Bambi....I just finished planting two orders that I received today also.
Got some more Munsons from Cheryl Day (Cheryladay on the LA), she sent extra fans of quite a few of them. Also got in my "candies" from Ida, bless her heart. She sent lots of extra fans. All mine were nice healthy plants, some had small fans, but hey, some make small fans so I don't nitpick about that, just as long as they're healthy. All in all, I planted 15 today. We're expecting rain this afternoon and tonight, so they should be off and running.

Good for you, Bambi! After that Kivariver post (forgive me if I have mispelled), I am thinking posting pictures of received daylilies is a good thing. Those that send good things have nothing to fear and lots of praise to receive...plus, plenty of free advertising.

Also, I agree...that wouldn't be what I would expect as a double fan, either. I think you're doing the right thing to let them know. We'll all get better plants when we insist on receiving what we paid for.

I find it very educational to see what others receive and how they perceive the orders. Both from the perspective of being a new customer and having received only a few orders myself, and from the perspective of wanting to someday sell DL.

For me, the bonus plant would make up for any disappointment I might have in the size of any fans. I'm more interested that the plants are healthy than in their initial size though I will admit I do get really excited by those huge, leek size fans and by the clumps I've received when I won a DF.

The other thing I notice is that some times people seem to perceive a plant is larger if its roots have not been trimmed. Not saying you did that here, just that it is something I noticed in other posts.

Here, the 2nd & 4th sets of dl look like they may have been out of the ground longer (darkened root systems) and that would be more of a concern for me. The difference in color makes them look less healthy to me though I realize that may not be the case.

Good looking plants there... who is the second order from - they look VERY nice.

berrytea4me - I have noticed that the lighter the roots, the faster they grow for me. Don't know if it is because they have been out of the ground a shorter time or what. Also, plants with new growth (white roots) seem to do great.

I don't know about the color of the roots ya'll. I dig and ship on the same day and some of my dl's have light colored roots, some darker, and some even have a reddish colored root system. I do like to see the new "white" growth on the root system....means those dl's are ready to get growing. :)

Thanks Jan... I have only ever dug three plants in my whole life - so I can only speak from planting experience. Maybe it is that the light roots like my soil! :o) Kindred soil or someodd...

Well, I am more interested in healthy blooming sized fans, whatever the size. If I receive it and it blooms for me this year, I'm a happy camper.

I know some sellers say the roots don't matter as much as the daylily will put out new roots very shortly anyway. I'm not sure about that, as I've bought from one seller who always chopped the roots way way short (sometimes hardly any) and it seems to me like his plants take a long time to settle in (duh).

Berrytea4me, give yourself a few years. Wait until you have more daylilies than fit on your property (although, I think you have plenty of land?) and you really want a particular daylily to hybridize with. Then, if it's a small thing, I don't think you'll be as excited about a bonus. Perspective changes over time. That's not good or bad. It's just that we all evolve. What you like this year, you might not next year.

I don't think a seller can go wrong if he/she communicates with the buyer. Things can usually always be worked out to everyone's satisfaction.

That "second order is also from Neal Buss of white Top Daylilys, all of those orders are really quite nice The small plants in the last order are SILOAMS, except for the one on the far left, that is the bonus plant and it does not get very big.

In all fairness I know Kivariver fairly well, and she is as straight a seller as there is, the only mistake she made was not e-mailing Michelle and telling her the fans were really tiny. Failing that if Michelle had contacted her she would have offered the refund. I have been in Ninas shoes, and done the same thing, you make a decision to send them and forget to e-mail and tell them because you are busy. I also think I know Michelle enough to say, she has no hard feelings. Both are really nice people!

Tweetypie, interesting you see different color in the roots within your garden. I wonder if the lighter roots are a genetic difference? If that is the case I wonder if some hybridizers might set dk roots as a cull criteria in a breeding program- that is those who breed for the overall plant appearance, not just the flower. Maybe not a very important criteria but if lighter roots help give the perception of plant health, maybe some have decided it is worth making a criteria to boost sales. Interesting thought to ponder. Will have to investigate to see if one type of roots is better from a growth/plant strength perspective than the other.

LOL at myself, no, I don't have property yet, just a large city lot in a rural town and it's probably going to run out of room for dl after this season.

In addition to all those dl I've purchased this winter, I started just over 400 seedlings. I've carefully researched (as much as one can online) most of the plants and seeds I've ordered with the hopes that they might, after I observe them in my climate and growing conditions, be suitable parents to start out with. I don't expect most to be ready for any hybridizing in their first year though I may keep some pollen if they put up scapes. They will all need time to settle in before being put to work.

Yes, perspectives change over time. That's part of life. Sometimes it is forced by circumstances, sometimes its a phase, sometimes its just a change in preferences.
` I also hope to hybridize other plants so space will be at a premium in no time. I'm actively looking for an opportunity to buy property suitable for growing, potentially for retailing, and in an area that meets other family needs.
