Metasequoia Ogon Question

I have a 25' wide stretch of lawn between my house and the driveway - is this too narrow to accomodate one of these beautiful trees? We have a walkout basement with a 2 story house, so there's a lot of house showing here. This side view of the house would look great with a tall tree to fill up the vertical stretch of foundation and siding. If not the Ogon, then any other suggestions for a tall but somewhat narrow tree with a fast growth rate?

Sounds good to me. You're going to need to never prune it obviously in order to keep it low to the ground.

Great tree! I think that'll be plenty of space. 40 years along the line, then you probably have a tree that has taken up the low ground space, but by then, maybe you'll hardly care less about the siding or the foundation wall.

10 year rate for this tree, I do not know. Height or width will give you an approximate idea of what to expect in those terms of both width and height for on-going 10 year annual growth cycles.

Watch for resin drippings and cone debris or other litter if near cars, etc- .

Thanks for the great suggestions! Well, despite it being the hottest time of summer I went ahead and planted the redwood - - I've been thinking about it for too long and was at RareFind Nursery so I bought one. I'm excited to see this tree (hopefully) take off! I actually like this tree for the vertical height and think I would prune so that the lower ground space will be supplemented with shrubs. That makes sense, right?

So far, I have not had any problem with Metasequoia and deer. Tasty ferns? Ferns seem completely avoided by deer --don't know why (based on personal experience and limited research). My deer seem to trash the Magnolias instead (in terms of the November rut--they don't touch the leaves!)

I have had an Ogon for three years and love it. The tree and the few dozen I have seen are a little different than the main species. They seem to grow narrower. Almost as fast a growth. Ogon retains fewer lower limbs. Mine has required some staking. Perhaps a bad location close to a deceased ash but who knows, a rarity for my small transplant. There are MANY of these planted in Ohio. Everyone looked healthy to me. Saw a couple in KC also. Eye-catching with a chance to get large quick. Not your regular fu-fu conifer. Not the best picture of mine. It was a freshly grafted transplant a couple years back. I say about NBA height now, seven foot something. last fall

That's good to hear about the burning Toronado. We have a similar climate as you over here in the Kansas City area. We flanked our driveway/house with one on each side. I think they should frame the house nicely as I plan to trim them up to hopefully keep them more like street trees. Yesterday I planted 10 of the species seedlings ordered from Welker's Grove nursery along a small stream in our backyard. Looking forward to seeing what all of these trees look like in 10-15 years and beyond if we're still here. Either way, someone will get to enjoy them. I'll put chicken wire and mulch around them to protect through the winter and first year of growth. Wish I knew where to find a nursery that carried small Gold Rush trees. I only seem to be able to find them online or in our local nursery in larger sizes. These species seedlings are $5 each and arrived in great shape from Welker's Grove.

Yeah, burning bush is a pest, I cannot believe people plant them, but one of my idiot neighbors did a few years ago. Several of them. Actually it's worse that nurseries sell them I guess, they should know better. That lady has fortunately left the neighborhood after living there for about 6 years and periodically lecturing ME about garden maintenance. Her main landscapings were burning bushes and the "improved" (Capital?) flowering pear!! And of course, the sod lawn she installed when she moved in and proceeded to scalp for 6 years, causing it to become a sea of crabgrass and broadleaf weeds. What a moron.
