I posted a few iris pics in that forum and as I said over there, it's been raining like crazy here and I can't get outside to get any really good pics. Here are a few from last week:

Jason, those are really fantastic areas. That's great that there's always something really eye-catching going on in the garden. I think the corner spot is really charming, and, as always, am nearly green with envy over your primulas. Are the spots of red in the 3rd photo all repeating clumps of primula?

Those primroses are just too much LOL! So beautiful. I really love the forth picture as it shows the backyard view.

Where are you daylilies and roses? I don't see any in the pictures.

About peppers - although my zone 10 is near San Diego. However, these peppers may be perennial for you as well. It was a bit frustrating because I planted quite a few this past year (around April 2009) - all were healthy - no problem growing them. The only thing is that they were sooooo slow to turn red. On the bright side, they finally did, and I am still harvesting peppers - would you believe! Although even tho slow growing, they kept a steady yield coming in. In a warmer climate, they probably would have "reddened" all at once. I grew - mainly the Anaheim - ancho type, which taste a lot like the green bells, without all of the problems growing them. I was mainly interested in making stir fries, dehydrating, powders, and Mexican dishes - not stuffing them anyway - so opted for them instead of the bells. Also grew Thai hots - (whew), which to me are even hotter than habaneros - (drying these for stir fries, powders, etc.). A few jalapenos - which I froze - after blackening skins, peeling and putting in citric acid and salt (for Mex-type dishes - taco fillings, etc.) Poblanos - used same as anchos. A paprika type - that I forgot name of - (for dehydrating and drying). Also some multi-colored hots that look like X-mas lights - forgot name. Still bearing strong, inspite of cold temps now. All of these plants were planted last year - around April - and I just cut them back - as they have new growth coming on now. I have never bothered to try to keep them perennial - (planting new plants when I set out tomatoes), but as you can see in our zone, you may not have to re-plant new ones -although I've personally not left mine in for a 2nd year's growth. They do, however, grow over a long period of time and are very hardy. My main reason for pulling them - is to make room for other things that I want the space for - as I grow year-round in small 4 x 6 ft. boxes - intensively. Yes... Hemerocallis, or Daylily as they're commonly known. I believe that variety is called "Big Bird". The actual blooms are huge! Earlier in the season, each bloom opens bigger than most dinner plates! A spectacular, showy variety! Lizalily's gardens are a lot more lush than mine are... I attribute that to location and climate. Mine look really good from early spring to about mid summer... and then the heat sucks all the lushness out of my gardens. After that, there's a brief second flush of bloom in the cooler weather of early autumn, and then the gardens decline, getting ready for dormancy and winter. I enjoy watching the gardens change and evolve throughout the seasons... from the first bulbs to show themselves in early spring, to the last flower and the "dried bouquet" look of snowy winter. It's all so amazing!

Marg - Yes primroses do like part shade the best. They fry if they get too much sun. Mine come back every year after the winter is over. The leaves are visible and stay green throughout the winter season and when spring comes the leaves green up and a new growth of leaves come up through the middle. Most of mine only flower in spring but I do have a few that re-flower in Fall (my blue-purple one always does). They would be a perfect companion for hostas, in fact I actually have a few hostas in with 5 or 6 primroses in my back shade garden and they do very well there. I only know the name of one of the primroses in my pictures. The double pink one is called "Sue Jervis". I only know that as the people that lived here before left the tag. That white one you like and the red one are huge in size and look like they were part of the original plantings when the garden was first put in. I wish I knew the names of them so I could tell you but I'm pretty sure the red one is common. It's just a red single with a yellow centre and a white edging around the petals. I've seen a lot like this at many garden centres, even Walmart had them last summer. The white one is a double and I've never seen another one like it anywhere but I don't think it would be hard to get. I'd just ask for a double white primrose and this is the one you'll probably get. If you do decide to try them, I don't think you'll be disappointed! Jason

Thank you both very much for the compliment. Lilyfinch I don't remember when I planted most of my roses. I have 23 antique roses and some knockouts, but the oldest I have is Mrs BR Cant which I planted 8 years ago in the spring, I can't remember if Lamarque and Climbing Pinkie were planted the same year or the next. Once I planted my first 2-3 roses I was addicted and bought usually 3-4 roses every year, I haven't planted any new ones in the past 3 years as I just don't have the time to spend in my garden like I did. I have found my climate here (can't speak for anywhere else as this is the only place I have ever gardened before, but Noisettes (which originated here in Charleston), regular tea roses, China roses and hybrid musk roses tend to thrive quite well and can get quite large fairly quickly for some. Peggy Martin (I did a post on the antique rose forum about this fantastic rose) is a found rose so I don't know what background she has but she seriously thrives on neglect and I do very very little to her. She is believe it or not the youngest rose I have! I have a lot of heavy clay soil so working with it is back breaking and slow which is why I haven't added anymore roses as of recently. I have some roses that grow quicker than others and in my garden here are some of my slow growers; Madame Alfred Carrier is one that is always touch and go, Mrs Dudley Cross, Maggie (I threaten to dig her up every year but she is looking for promising this year so we shall see), Cornelia (another touch and go rose that I have threatened to shovel prune but keep giving her a chance and she too looks better this spring)...While Lamarque, The Charlestonian, Peggy Martin, Belinda (not to be confused with Belinda's Dream), Duchesse de Brabant are among the fastest growing then there's Mrs BR Cant who hardly did a thing the first three years and then took off into one monster of a rose. The rest seem to grow at a fairly normal rate. I had to laugh a bit at your saying hoping to stay long enough, I have wanted to move to a bigger home for awhile but my garden keeps me from doing so, I just can't leave her and anytime I tell someone we were thinking of moving they would gasp and say you can't leave your garden what about all the hard work you have done. My daughter laughes at me because in the winter I'm all about moving, that is till spring comes and I'm like I can never leave. Haha I think she right! But I would say in general it will take about 4 years to have them really start filling out again though it just all depends really in end on a particular rose. ;) So I didn't intend for this to be so long lol, but I hope that helps you some. Cracking - Yes those are repeating clumps of primula. I love them. They are huge and last quite awhile. If I ever move again, I swear I'm digging them all up and taking them with me! haha

Rita - If you look closely you can see some daylilies and roses. The roses are just barely leafed out and the dayliles are still small. The dayliles don't really get going til June and same with the roses. I only have one daylily right now that has scapes. It is always first to bloom, an old, tall yellow. I will get a pic of it when it finally does bloom. My roses are doing great and some even have some small buds but neither the roses or dayliles will be picture ready for awhile yet......(and yes I'm really trying to be patient...haha)

I see some liitle fans or scapes or what in the bed but I thought they were dafodil folliage. Can't see them too well there. Now that you point them out I see next to your primroses what I think might be leafing out rose shubs? But they are so small! My roses are just about ready to bust into full bloom and I do have a blossom already here and there. I guess I forget that you are so far behind me in the spring season.

Rita - Yes my roses always get a lot of damage from winter and I have to cut them back quite abit in spring. Last year was the same and they still did well come July/August but yes, definitely late coming. I am excited this year as I planted some hardy roses that were bred specifically to withstand our rotten Canadian winters. One is from the Explorer series and three from the Parkland series. They are supposed to have little to no winter die back. I still love the english roses and the hybrid teas but they just don't like our winters very much. When I post pictures in July and August you'll see how much they will have grown. My daylilies are coming along but yes, they seem very slow this year as well. Our April was so cold and dry and now our May has been so cold and wet. I hope the summer is a lot better!

I cut my roses way back each spring also and I mean all my roses except for the few climbers (and I do trimming on them too) and some really big 6 foot tall small flowered shrubs. I have quite afew hybred teas but many more florabundas and what they stick into the shrub rose catagory. People are surprised as I go and cut them mercelessly to 18 inches or maybe two feet. I do this as soon as they want to leaf out. You should see them now just ready to bloom and so thick you can't see the ground between them. They love to be cut back. But I have a longer growing season than you.

Nice tulips on that first picture. And the flower beds are nice too. The island bed looks like it has a lot of variety.
