Just bought 6 Thuja Green Giants. OK to leave in pot?

Hello,

Our local Lowe's was selling 24" green giants for $4.98 each, so I grabbed 6 of them. I know this isn't the best time to plant them, but is it possible to leave these in their pots for a month or two before planting? I'd like to wait until it's cooler, if possible. Meanwhile, will watering twice a day while in the pot give them a better shot for survival? Any help is greatly appreciated! I'm in Roanoke, VA.

A friend of mine planted about 100 Green Giants about three years ago. They were about 18-24" tall when he planted them. Green Giants are pretty deer resistant, but where my friend and I live there are just too many deer in a small area (island) for that to mean much. The first year he planted these 100 Green Giants, the deer destroyed about 25 of them. After he replaced them, I recommended that he start using Milorganite fertilizer around the trees to keep the deer away. (It's an unadvertized fact that Milorganite acts as a deer repellent.) He started dumping Milorganite around the base of the trees on the perimeter of his property and the following year those were nearly 2ft. taller than the other trees (same growing conditions). Needless to say he started using it around all the Green Giants and this year some of the ones that he started using it on first are taller than me (6ft.). I started using Milorganite on my lawn a few years ago to keep the deer away that were eating my plants and it did wonders for my lawn. I started dumping it around all my perennials, mixing it in with the potting soil for my annuals, and tilling it into my vegetable garden. Everything improved! The stuff is like the Frank's Red Hot commercial... I put that s*#& on everything! I'm not sure it's the "best" fertilizer for your Green Giants, but it's definitely good. In the past I was always afraid to fertilize because I'd overdone it too many times and killed/burned too many plants and lawn. Milorganite is organic, so you can't really use too muich... it will just sit there on/in the soil until the soil microorganisms can consume it. Good luck!

hey dave ... he used the sleeve that goes around the black tubes .... not the tubes.. yes???? .. the ones i have seen are white ... i would get rid of the sleeves.. as soon as possible ... but the most important thing.. will be insuring water in july, august and early sept ... what i call the heat of summer ... they will need constant amount of water.. letting them nearly dry in between waterings .... and they will need to be watered into early november ... but insuring that they are NOT standing in water.. when the soil freezes ... all, of course..... based on what mother nature provides ... i did basically the same thing.. without rototilling.. and without mulch.. on pure yellow mineral sand ... and the little 6 inchers.. planted in 2000 are going on 12 feet ... i ended up using a drip irrigation line ... to avoid the cost and work of proper mulch ... all lived ... dont recognize the name .... welcome to the GW .... cant wait to see the pix ... do keep in mind.. trees that blow in the wind.. grow up stronger... but i like your idea of protecting them since they are freshly planted ... if any of yours dont make it..in oct or so... move the end ones.. into the line.. so you dont have gaps .... good luck ken ps: PEAT pot ... made of peat .. lol on PEA pots ...

you call you 2 to 3 footers small .. i started with 6 inches.. on bare sand ... with drip irrigation ... 14 years later ... they are all over 20 feet ... [note: no mulch with drip] you kinda left out the drip irrigation info ... you CAN figure out a schedule ... my point is.. no one else can figure it out for you ... with my drip ... i would water.. until it is moist.. at least 6 inches down ... run the water ... dig a hole under an emitter ... run it more.. dig another hole .... etc ... FIGURE IT OUT .... [actually.. in my hosta beds.. i ran it.. until a hole dug between two emitters .. was damp at depth ...] again.. with my system.. on my soil ... i found .... that if i ran the drip for 6 to 8 hours ... in my sand.. i could get the sand moist to the root depth ... dont ever forget.. its all about getting water to the roots ... not the soil surface ... and we really dont care.. if the surface gets dry ... keep digging holes .... [if it need be said.. dig hole not where trees are ... you should have plenty of drippers in between plants ... remove grass.. dig down.. make discovery ... replace soil.. put grass plug back in ...] and barring drought.. or extreme heat... i might only water every 7 to 10 days... because it simply doenst dry.. AT DEPTH ... all that fast.. subject to your soil ... and once you figure it out.. you can quit digging holes ... the grass is irrelevant... with the drippers.. so make your own decision in that regard ... and for those of you who dont knwo about engineered drippers... they may only put out 1/4 gal per hour ... so even thought the hours might sound extreme ... usage usually isnt ... also... very little is lost to evaporation ... as you arent making it airborne to begin with ... so dont go all horrified on these numbers ... good luck .. sound like that guy you are relying on.. is brilliant.. if i may say so myself... lol ken ps: also.. getting it moist in the first place.. may take more hours.. than maintaining it ....

Hello again! so, I'm a little out of my depth here in discussing horticulture which takes place in Texas. That said, I don't think these guys look too bad. Yes, it is troubling to see the little dead branchlets and what's more, I have no definite idea on that. If you were up here somewhere, I'd expect actual physical injury, like wind or something, but that does not appear to be the case. So here's a few things you can do: Find a clean white sheet of paper, hold it under a branch which exhibits this browning, and shake vigorously. What you're trying to do is see what, if anything, falls onto the paper. This is especially useful if a spider mite problem is suspected. And I mention that because especially in a hot zone, that could account for some of this damage. Spider mites are tiny things, not insects but more closely related to spiders. But unlike our friendly eight-legged garden helpers, spider mites suck the juice out of plant leaves and stems. They can be controlled via a variety of fairly "soft" measures-knocking them out of the tree with strong stream of pressurized water, the use of insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils, and finally, there are some heavier-duty chemicals if these measures don't do it. But I'm not saying you have spider mites, just throwing that possibility out there. Also of concern in the south are insects called "bag worms". We don't have bag worms up here thankfully but I understand they can be quite the issue down south. So look into that, although I do not see the "bags" in the photos. Let's see, what else.....; You mention dogs, and dog pee-for whatever reason-seems to show up on arbs with regularity. It presents as blackened areas of foliage down low enough to where male dogs could lift their legs sufficiently high. There is at least some reason to think some of this damage could be due to that. But for the most part-believe it or not-these plants are doing okay. It just takes a while for the root system to build up to a point where the trees will really take off. I think that'll happen here eventually. What I do like to see is healthy growing tips-can't really call them buds on arbs-and yours appear to have healthy tips. that's where the future of the plants is and for the most part, it looks like yours are okay. +oM

Thank you, Ken. How do I examine the roots though? I guess I don't know how I can examine them without removing the pot. And if I do have to do root surgery and wait to plant, do you simply put back in the pot? I apologize for the newbie questions. We're very grateful to have help like this on the web. thanks so much.

After a plant has been growing in the pot for a while, the roots grow throughout the potting mix so that together, the roots and the potting mix set up to form a "cake".

When you take the plant out of the pot, this solidified root cake remains intact and can be inspected without completely crumbling all over the place. If the cake has dried out, it might be a little harder to remove from the pot; moistening the cake a little bit prior to removal seems to help.

It's also not a bad idea to put the pot and tree at a 45 degree angle to the ground, before sliding it out. That way, you don't need to pull as hard when separating the tree from the pot (e.g. you're not pulling the tree directly upward out of the pot, which can put stress on the trunk).

It's usually pretty easy to slide it back into the pot after inspection.

put your hand over the media.. with the trunk between your fingers .... and tip it over 180 degrees .... and it should slide right out... be aggressive.. it will come ...

observe.. snap a pic .... turn it back over... and it should slip right back in ..

based on the size of the plant in ratio to the pot.. you are probably going to have one big chunk of root ... snap a pic ...

report back.. post the pic.. and we can go from there ...

these are very forgiving plants ... and you have a bulletproof guarantee... some times.. you can just unwind the roots.. which would give you no problems...

other times you have to cut the biggest ones and that is where you MIGHT have trouble doing it in the heat of summer ...

PS: if the ball of soil simply falls apart... just plant the thing ....

Ok. I removed each plant from their pot to take the pics. There are 6 groups of pics. Most look pretty wound up, while a couple look comfortable. What do you all think? At this point, would it be wise to spread the roots and transfer to a larger pot until I can plant these in October? Or should I just stick them in the ground now? We're looking at 90Â° degree temps for the upcoming weeks. Thanks everyone!

i am sorry ... i have lost sight of one important fact ... THESE ARE 5 DOLLAR PLANTS ...

just plant them ... jeez ... lol

what i would worry about on a 5$ versus.. 50.. vs.. 100.. vs 500 dollar plants is different ...

all but the first look pretty decent .... crush the media.. untangle the roots a bit.. and plant them .. at the proper height.. water properly.. and mulch properly ...

the first.. i would spend some time trying to unravel the root mass ... perhaps even cutting a few of the worst tangled ones ... and insure a little more tlc ...

one of the reasons they are $5 .. is that they are weeds.. and grow like weeds.. and are near bullet proof ..

frankly.. on these plants.. you have a greater chance to mess up.. if you were to try to fool with pots for 3 months ...

the bigger ones ... from the other post ....i dont know

Ha! I know it, Ken. It's not the money...I just want to learn to do things right the first time, when possible. I want to put these in the ground and feel confident in my work. And I just want to ensure they have a better chance to live.
How far back should I cut the 2nd leaders that you mentioned? Thanks for your time Ken. Please accept my virtual handshake. :)
